Breaking News: Anna Nicole Autopsy Results Released - No Foul Play, Accidental Overdose

It’s been 46 days since Anna Nicole died and we have all waited on pins and needles to find out what killed her, besides the tragic comedy of life.

The National Enquirer and Star Magazine  both reported that Anna died from of a toxic level of injected sleep medication chloral hydrate, but that merely accelerated her demise, as a deadly blood infection from an unsterilized needle was already ravaging her body.  There were reports at the time of Anna’s death that stated she was suffering from flu-like symptoms and was being treated with antibiotics and over-the-counter cold medications to treat those symptoms and a fever as high as 105.  Clearly, if this information is true, Anna was misdiagnosed.  It’s hard to say if the damage could have been undone had she received proper care.

Broward Country Medical Examiner Joshua Perper has been gathering a body of evidence from interviews with those who were last with Anna before she died, computer files and family members to piece together the exact cause of Anna’s death and at a press conference this morning he is supposed to release his findings.  The findings were to be released a couple weeks ago, but were delayed for Perper to follow up on leads based on files on Anna’s personal computer and emails between Anna and doctors who had been supplying Anna with drugs via the mail.

The exact cause according to the coroner: accidental overdose.  Perper admitted that Anna was taking anti-anxiety drugs, methadone and weight-loss drugs.  He recounted that Anna was suffering from depression due to the death of her son last September, but that at the time of her death she was NOT depressed.  But she was injecting growth horomones, B-12 and something called a “longevity drug” (hard to say with his heavy accent) into her buttocks.  Something she had complained about on her way to Florida from the Bahamas for a scheduled appearance for Trimspa.  She quickly developed a fever and was being treated with antibiotics, including Cipro.  She was given an ice bath to lower her fever, which helped.  She was given chloral hydrate, a sleeping medication the night before her death.

On the day of her death Feb. 8, Howard Stern woke up at 10:00 am and Anna was already awake and she asked him to help her to the bathroom, which he states he did and then left to run errands.  He left her in the company of her bodyguard’s wife’s company to look after her. The last Howard K. Stern saw of Anna was after she had already died.  Dr. Perper indicated that those who were looking after Anna took appropriate measures to save her life, and that there was nothing to imply illegal actions on anyone’s part, including Stern.

Perper states that during the autopsy scar tissue was found on her buttocks from injections being continually shot into the same area, and that at some point a needle did penetrate far enough into her bloodstream to cause a blood infection, but the antibiotics should have been treating that infection.

Nine prescription meds were found in her system; Chloral Hydrate(combination of Tricholorethanol and Trichloroacetic acid), Diphenhydramine (Benedryl), Clonazaepam (Klonopin), Diazepam (Valium), Nordiazepam (metabolite, Temazepam (metabolite), Oxazepam, Lorazepam.  This lethal does was the combination that did it.

Even after finding these drugs in her system, the medical examiner still believed that Anna had died from natural causes due to such small levels in her system –  until the third week  — when the toxicology reports found that there were high levels of the sleeping medications found in her body.  The examiner explained that chloral hydrate breaks down so quickly in the blood stream that is wasn’t until the final toxicology reports came back that they were finally able to determine her real cause of death. The Smoking Gun has the autopsy report.

At this point, they changed their findings to an accidental overdose from combined drug intoxication - mainly chloral hydrate -  which is were it stands now as the official cause of death.

Charlie Tiger, Seminole police chief is stated there was no evidence of illegal drugs, or anything unusal.  They are indicating that this case was an accidental overdose, with no foul play involved. Howard K. Stern will not be charged with murder.

What about Dannielynn Hope, Anna’s 6 month old daughter who is at the center of a paternity/custody debate?  The latest in the baby-daddy drama is a courtdate scheduled for April 3 to discuss the DNA findings which were sent to a lab for results last week.  Popular theory has it ex-boyfriend photographer Larry Birkhead is the most likely candidate to be Dannielynn’s biological father, but Bahama laws favor the paternal father on record, and the birth certificate lists Anna’s long-time lawyer and companion Howard K Stern as the father.  We will await more news on this developing story.
