Hollywood Timecapsule: Kiefer Sutherland Finally Forgives Julia Roberts For Dumping Him Days Before Wedding
Long before Angelina Jolie was wrecking homes, Julia Roberts was breaking hearts (and wrecking homes too, for that matter). Almost 16 years ago Pretty Woman star Julia Roberts, and 24’s Kiefer Sutherland were the “it” couple. But that didn’t last long. Just days before they were set to be married, Julia Roberts took off for Europe with Jason Patric (Kiefer’s on screen rival from Lost Boys) in 1991. Julia had met Kiefer on the set of Flatliners in 1990, when he was married to his first wife Camilia Kath. The couple had a two-year-old daughter, Sarah Jude when Kiefer left his wife for Julia Roberts.Â
Five days before their wedding, Julia left him after finding out he had an affair with a stripper. Now, in hindsight and with years of wisdom under his belt, Kiefer has this to say about his heartache and being left at the altar:
“I commend Julia for seeing how young and silly we were, even as painful and difficult as it was.” An ss for his once good friend Jason Patric: “We were friends. I never got a call.”
Kiefer spent many of the last 16 years since the break-up trying both successfully, and at times unsuccessfully, to put his life back together. He had a few movie credits to his name in the 90’s, often playing troubled characters, most notably the racist brother of accused rapists in the riveting A Time To Kill, and a marine of questionable character in A Few Good Men.
It wasn’t until 2001, ten years after being jilted (seemingly through his own poor judgment) that Kiefer would get his career back on track playing the complex and loyal patriot, Jack Bauer, on the wildly successful Fox series 24. Kiefer has tremendous talent and depth, which surely comes as no surprise having a dad like Donald Sutherland - but ultimately he battles his demons of substance abuse one day at a time. (cliche alert.)
And heartbreaker Julia Roberts has remained busy over the years since their tumultous breakup. In 2001, Roberts won her first Oscar for Best Actress in Erin Brockovich, portraying the environmental activist of the same name. Roberts has also had several beaus, including a short-lived marriage to country singer Lyle Lovett (?), and has dated Benjamin Bratt, Daniel Day Lewis, Matthew Perry and briefly Liam Neeson. That’s quite a list of leading men, but ultimately Julia settled down with cameraman Danny Moder, whom she met on the set of her film The Mexican (with Brad Pitt). Moder was married at the time and his wife Vera Steinberger, a makeup artist was none too happy when her husband left her for Julia, eventually marrying the movei star in 2002. Vera’s feelings on the matter:
“I’ll never be able to forgive Julia — she’s a husband stealer.But it won’t last with her anyway. She will be looking for a new husband within a year. Danny has a roving eye, too, and he won’t change. He cheated on me and he will cheat on her.”
Well, despite what Vera may say, Julia and Danny have been going strong and have two children, two-year-old twins Phinneas and Hazel, and they are expecting their third child this July. Maybe dumping poor Kiefer was for the best - the two seem to be doing fine on their own. Clearly Julia has passed her “homewrecker” title on to the reigning champ, Angelina Jolie.

I believe, depending upon the scuttlebutt you listen to, that Moder and Vera were separated when he and Julia met, but that, again depending on the scuttlebutt you listen to, as soon as Vera heard he’d taken up with a megastar, suddenly she either A)wanted him back or B)wanted to sell a wronged wife sob story to as many gossip rags as possible.
Certainly Robert’s personal life was always a bit of a colorful train wreck (and good on Sutherland for finding the silver lining on that cloud), but I always thought Moder’s ex was just a little bit too loud about her poor treatment to be sympathetic.
