“Girls Gone Wild” Creator Joe Francis’ Serving Jail Time With Convicted Cop Killer
Joe Francis is still in jail and every time I think of that it confirms my belief in a higher power.
Apparently, the Girls Gone Wild creator isn’t having such a great time in jail. Having already spent 14 days in jail (Francis was taken into custody on April 10th at the Panama City Airport) he has been sentenced to 35 days (minus time served) in conjunction with his contempt of court charges stemming from a civil suit brought by seven underage victims claiming sexual abuse.
In court, the tearful Francis issued this apology and statement on the proceedings and contempt charges:
“I’m sorry for my behavior,†Francis said, wiping tears from his eyes. He said he was confused by an appeal his lawyers had filed and whether that meant he had to turn himself in. “That’s not an excuse. I should have just been there on time. I’m sorry. I really am. I’ve had a lot of time to think about it.â€
But there are more bad times ahead. Despite Francis’ lawyer Jan Handzlik’s efforts on behalf of his client to lessen the sentence to under 30 days, Judge Smoak would not concede. According to the article, 35 days exceeds 30 which is a magic number on his”criminal scoresheet” and makes him illegible for an additional year of jail time if Francis is convicted of federal tax evasion charges that were brought against him the state of Arizona.
Francis face further legal woes. After his contempt sentence has been served he faces additional charges of violating contraband restrictions for possessing prescription drugs and money while in jail. Since he is federal custody, those charges won’t be filed until his 35 day sentence is complete. Besides the tax evasion, contempt of court and contraband charges, Francis may also face federal charges in California for violating in that state in relation to not “keeping the proper paperwork showing that the performers in his “Girls Gone Wild†films were of legal age.”
To make matters worse, Francis’ cellmate, a man named Robert Bailey, is a convicted cop killer who has been sentenced to die, and has been taunting the soft porn peddler. Joe Francis suffers from an anxiety disorder and missed at least one drug cart round, plus he has been having trouble dealing with his cellmate wardmate [editors correction], who according to his lawyer Aaron Dyer, “would sit there and yell, ‘Girls Gone Wild! Joe Francis! Whoo!”
I realize that Joe Francis isn’t a mass murderer, or a drug cartel boss, or a serial killer or a whole host of other felonious things. But what he is, is a smut peddler and what he does, is target underage girls. He also thinks nothing of using his power and influence to take advantage of women who are minors and who are drunk, to humiliate and or, have sex with them — and to me, that’s almost as bad.
Can’t say I feel sorry for the guy, I can’t even admit to not feeling a twinge of joy at his expense. But hey, he broke the law, not me.

As a former employee of Mantra Entertainment, and privy to events mostly unseen by many, I must offer my opinion to your article.
Since reading nearly every related news/web/magazine article since my arrest in Oct. 2004 stemming from these matters, I feel obligated to make truth evident. Although Joe finally being in jail is an evil sense of relief, GGW does not “target” underage women. In fact, the burden mostly lied in recognizing fake IDs provided to us by underage girls, attempting to pass as 18 years of age or older. The guidelines for us in the field were very stringent and always adhered to. I feel this needs to be said simply due to my association with the company. I am not a smut peddler. Also, Robert Baily is not Joe’s cell mate, they are both simply in the same cell block. Very significant difference.
I do enjoy your article and have never responded to any in the past five years. The majority of write-ups on this matter contain incorrect information or elements of unfounded slander. Again, I am releived to see Joe in jail more than anyone else. He must be held accountable. Truth has always been on my side, and therefore must attempt to reveal all truths involved.

I fixed the cellmate information, you were correct. I misread that information. I am glad you felt compelled to respond. Truth is, I don’t like Joe Francis and have written about him extensively, including a much more indepth piece on Blogcritics.org.

I also have worked for Mantra and know very much about the situation at hand. Joe is a man with a big mouth but in my eyes i feel as though he is being treated unjust. He is not by any means a preditor as many assume he is. He has a very big heart for those that are around him and would give you his shirt off his back. Joe is simply guilty of not thinking before speaking and more so is guilty of being a young successful man who runs a company that many seem inapporpriate. I know one thing for sure, I have been on the road with the company on shoots a bars around the country and I can’t remember how many times girl’s would ask ” Do you want my fake ID or my real ID”. Some girls are drunk but as many that are drunk there is more that are sober and willing to be on camera. I would challenge you to watch a Girls Gone Wild Video and have you tell me how many of the girls are wasted. I feel very strongly about this whole issue because it makes me angry to see someone who has worked so diligently and put so much of their life into this company be treated like he does. I am by no way condoning his behavior these past few weeks, not obeying a judges order is innapporate and he should serve time for it, but being accused of everything that he is, is uncalled for. He is not a preditor by any means

I can surely assume “mike” only worked for Mantra less than a week, seeing that Joe has the uncanny ability to offend any person within earshot, usually in less than thirty seconds. I sat in jail for that ass, did you?

Its times like this that I hope ALL prison stories are correct!!!
As far as the “smut” part, I mean the part posted by “Mary”, I Find it hard to belive that you, a woman, would come to the defence of such a monster.
