Dog The Bounty Hunter Latest Celeb Caught Using “N” Word
In our efforts to sanitize the world of all things unpleasant (can’t someone do something about Paris and Britney?) we are now embroiled in the next “Imusgate,” this time the offender/victim is Duane “Dog” Chapman from A&E’s “Dog the Bounty Hunter”. The show, as you can ascertain from the title, is about a bounty hunter, with camera’s following Dog and his extended bounty-hunting family as they track down criminals and bad guys on the loose.
I’ve caught the show a few of times (which has been canceled due to this flare-up) and not once have I picked up on any overt racial vibes from Dog or anyone in his family, that said, this audio clip is pretty damning. It seems Dog is angry with his son Tucker and goes off on a paranoid tirade, which in part attacks Tucker’s girlfriend, who happens to be black. What everyone seems to fail in seeing, is that if Dog and his family were TRULY racist, not in a trillion years would anyone, let alone Dog’s son, even associate with people of varying degrees of racial diversity. And they certainly wouldn’t date someone outside their racial circle.
Trust me, racists teach their children early on who they can or can’t date, if Duane hated any racial group, Tucker wouldn’t even entertain the idea.
I’ve listened to the audio and while it is offensive in its use of the “N” word, an offense on the ears and mind, the main feeling I got from Dog is that he far more paranoid than he is racist. His main issue is he is afraid that Tucker’s girlfriend will betray the family if an offensive word is uttered in her presence. Which, considering the salty and gritty nature of their world and social status, is pretty likely to happen within the everyday Chapman household. Not cool, but certainly not unexpected considering these people are bounty hunters who deal with the most unsavory elements of society. Proper etiquette and the King’s English does NOT apply.
And lo and behold, exactly what Dog is worrying about happened. Someone taped him going off and using socially unacceptable terms that “white” people should know better than to use, and then subsequently leaked said tape to the press to destroy “all he’s worked for.” Kind of ironic actually.
Fast forward and now we have that annoying race-baiter Rev. Al Sharpton being called into offer forgiveness to Dog and his racist ways. As though Al Sharpton is some kind of legitimate spokesperson for an entire race of people, never mind the fact that he has been found to be extremely racist himself, especially towards Jews.
The bottom line in all of this: you can’t regulate the minds and hearts of people by intimidating them over the use of a word which is still commonly used within a whole community and perpetuated by entertainers capitalizing on their “blackness.”
Dog should apologize to the young woman he was directing his offensive language at, Tucker’s girlfriend. He should apologize to his son for setting a really poor example of fatherly concern and he should commit himself to some inner soul-searching to determine why he is so paranoid and seems to be placing that ire and fear on an entire group of people, a group mind you, I have witnessed him helping, counseling, working with and comforting.
One final note on this matter, racial bias is something we all feel and must deal with. Stereotypes exist because a certain number of people perpetuate those myths, but a person with an open heart and mind knows better than to judge a person as an individual based solely on the color of their skin, rather than the nature of their character. Now that is racism in its most raw form. I don’t think that is who Dog really is.
But rest assured, there are PLENTY of people who are, and if we use the litmus test of who uses the “N” word to measure who is or who isn’t racist, we will miss all sorts of deceptively, sneaky, racist f*ckers who sanitize their language for their protection, while simultaneously harming people through their actions.

[...] I’ve watched the show a handful of times and honestly I’m shocked. I guess I really shouldn’t be but dukes always seemed very cool and is a God fearing man. Valuable lesson learned. The comments are actually racist two fold. He not only uses the n-word but makes inference to the fact that blacks shouldn’t be trusted. [...]

Well, it’s not quite been cancelled, but production has been suspended due to this.
This makes me sad. I’ve watched the show a lot, in fact it is one of my son’s favorite shows. Dog, even though he uses very colorful language on quite a regular basis, is no racist. If he were, there would be a whole laundry list of incidences from his past to back this up. Instead, we have a long list of people he has helped, of every race and color.
Should he have used this word? NO. It’s vulgar and offensive. Nobody should use it. But Dog hasn’t been known for his eloquent flair for the English language. He cusses a lot. But he is a successful bounty hunter with a sixth sense for what a person is like. If he thought this woman wasn’t to be trusted, she probably wasn’t to be trusted. What he thought would happen, happened. He shouldn’t have used the word, but he was right about what would happen.
He should apologize, let his show go into hiatus for a few months, and then start over. A lifetime of achievement shouldn’t be scrapped because of a moment of lost temper. Everyone loses their tempers and says things they regret…but should he lose everything he’s worked for? And where’s the rest of this tape? Why is this the only snippet we hear?
Oh, and Sharpton should stay out of it. Seriously. What, he’s suddenly the voice of Black America? I know black people who are embarrassed that he is breathing, let alone black.

People should understand that there are different degrees of racism. Being a racist doesn’t mean that you have to wear white robes, actively avoid certain ethnic groups, or practically spit venom every time you’re forced to talk about or interact with them.
I also get a bit tired of the “I can’t be racist. My best friend/girlfriend/neighbor/classmate is

Extremely well said. As Whoopi says:
“It’s never the word. It’s the ‘intent’ of the word. The question is: Why are you angry? And where are you focusing it?”
Thank you for your candor!

I would just like to say that I have been telling people for years that Dog is not what he is portrayed to be… I have never liked him and I knew that in time the truth would come out. I hope he loses everything.
Comment by Franchise Casiraghi — November 1, 2007 @ 10:58 am
C’mon - they use the word at home? And they don’t mean “scum n*gger without a soul”? I mean, where did he even come up with that if that’s not what he means? Scary, scary stuff.
Comment by RyanB — November 1, 2007 @ 11:01 am
In what positive way can he use the word? It is a negative term, no matter who uses it. How would he use it? It is ridiculous that that word would be used just based on the type of work he does, how many blacks have you seen in HI? There is NO reason for Dog or anyone else to use the word. It is not mandatory because he works with criminals. Let’s NOT give him a ‘free pass’ because he wants to save his career. Don;t use the word, problem solved.

I WANTED TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT YES HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAVE USED THAT N WORD, BUT NOBODY IS PERFECT. GIVE DUANE CHAPMAN A BREAK, HE IS ONLY HUMAN AND HE HAS DONE A LOT IN HIS LIFE TIME TO IMPROVE TODAY’S SOCIETY IN TRYING TO MAKE IT BETTER FOR EVERYONE, COME ON EVERYONE, I STILL LOVE THIS GUY AND HIS FAMILY!!!!!
Comment by KAREN MCKAY — November 1, 2007 @ 1:18 pm
While he was totally wrong, this was a private family phone conversation. And his actions have never showed him to be racist IMO. If he was, his son certainly wouldn’t have a black girlfriend…
As usual, though, it is the hypocracy that is most disgusting. So AE suspends the show? But they were so proud of “Growing Up Gotti” which only aired because it was about the family of a mass murderer gangster. Yeah, ok. Gosh, I remember when AE was the quality network in the cesspool of tv.

Who is standing up for GOD. People use his name in vain everyday. The word nigger is a devil’s tool, used to divide. Stand up for GOD.

People, you can’t be serious. You’re saying it’s unlikely that Chapman’s a racist because he doesn’t give off an overt racist vibe, and a racist’s kid will grow up to be a racist too?! That belief is based on what? Experience or actual studies. Smarten up folks. I’ve known lots of people who have racist parents and many grow up rebelling against it so that’s a lousy argument for defending this guy. Bounty Hunter has gone to great pains to hide his most repugnant qualities. Did you listen to the tape? Chapman said he wasn’t going to allow himself to lose everything he’d worked so hard for by getting caught making racially hateful remarks (only he used the worst possible language). He was talking about covering his ass because he is a racist! Even if this was intended as a private call, it’s public now. It’s a glimpse into the real character of the guy you “still love”.
Never in my life have I, in a moment of anger or conversation, felt I needed to call someone or refer to someone using a racial epitaph. To Karen McKay “Give him a break, he’s human”??! Apathy toward this type of racism leads to acceptance. You’re right on one point. He’s human. I’m not trying to demonize him. It was stupid thing to say, but stop defending him. We all have to accept responsibility for our words and actions. Stars don’t get a different set of rules and standards. Get over him as a star, and stop buying into the image he so successfully sold you so well.

I am so tired of people having to kiss butt for every thing they do or say that someone takes racist or not proper for them. yes, he should have not used the word, not because it was wrong but because if he was worried she was like that he just gave her a reason to show it. The N word …as we now call it has been used in such bad ways that we cant even say it, instead has to be referred to as a letter, thats not Dogs fault…thats all of ours. The word means basically ignorance…no where was it ever in a book defined as a way to insult a black person. If he felt she was ignorant and what have you then thats the word he used as the way he as a person talks to his family, not referring it to her being black. I am from the south and when we where kids we would call each other that just as we would any other name..no one came after us like that..but society is so messed up due to accepting all the crap we do to each other they now try to fix it and its about 15 years to late. so I say..yeah dog ya messed up by letting her know ya said it and that sucks..but people …get over it..the only ones who get offended are the ones to busy worrying about how they look and sound to everyone else..life is to short. we all know how dog comes across so all i can say is …oh plezzzz..
still love ya dog…

I don’t think anybody has touched on the fact that Dog, when trying to excuse his poor choice of words, continues to dig himself into a bigger hole by saying that it didn’t matter to him if his son’s girlfriend was “Mexican or a whore.”
He’s basically saying to his son “I don’t care what other type of “scum” you bring home, as long as she’s not BLACK, please anything but BLACK!”
When looking at the whole picture here, it doesn’t look good for Dog. Sorry Dog, but the evidence points towards you being a racist as well as a classist.
Comment by Cindy — November 1, 2007 @ 4:54 pm
Yet, it’s perfectly okay for black people to call each other, and themselves, this name all the time? That excuses it, because they are black and Dog isn’t? Do you know how many black people defend their use of the word for themselves, while at the same time calling any other race all sorts of other names?
The man works with scum. He’s picked up some of the language. He’s had a hard life. His language reflects that. NO, he shouldn’t have used it, he shouldn’t use it at all. But he’s done a ton of good things for people. Changed many lives. So we should throw all that away for a moment of no self-control?
I wonder how many people who wanted to let Orlando Bloom or Britney Spears or Don Imus or Nick Hogan or any of the other celebs caught in bad situations, now want to string Dog up by the chain.
Racism is so much more than a word.
Comment by k — November 1, 2007 @ 5:08 pm
Well tiffany its ok to called you a nigger because your ignorant and dont understand the concept of the whole topic.
Comment by Karen Smedes — November 1, 2007 @ 5:10 pm
Also britney spears is a nigger anyone who acts stupid or childless can be called a nigger.Examples britney spears makes stupid choices which make us all look bad as an American community. Look at all the crap she is taking her kids through. Also Dog is a good example of what so many call us white trash . Dog you making us look very bad. I wouldnt be suprise if someone called you a nigger hun.
Comment by Karen Smedes — November 1, 2007 @ 5:14 pm
What a double standard, Blacks call us white people & other races all types of racial slurs, yet let someone call the them that oh so bad “N” word. Get over it, this is not a perfect world. Lets secretly tape some of the black people talking about the other races and you will find the racial slur problems happens all the time. Its not a justification, just the truth. It would be great if nobody ever used these slurs, but it’s not likely to happen. So grow up and accept life with its problems. Dog is a good man and canceling his show over this conversation, which is an invasion of his privacy is completely ridiculous.
Comment by Dale W — November 2, 2007 @ 1:16 am
I have watched “Dogs” show on A& E for some time now, I have read Dog’s book”You Can Run, But You Cant Hide”, and I KNOW Dog is NO RACIST. He may have used the “N” word, but it was in the heat of the moment, he is after all only human, and was looking out for his sons well being.I have heard too, that it was this son, who sold Dog out. This was a private conversation, not meant for the public. We have all said things in the heat of the moment, that we have later regreted. Give Dog a break, and also, remember, that African American peoples use this ternm freely not only in their conversations with one another, but in the music they make as well:ie , RAP ! Get over it black people,ok??
Comment by Mona — November 2, 2007 @ 3:38 am
Let me say that what the Dog said was offensive….Thus, I am more offended and outraged at what his son did, by secretly recording a “private” conversation. That makes me more upset and sick that what words Dwayne Chapman used. Sorry, but what kind of low life “secretly” records thier father…what to make some extra cash….what a LOWLIFE!!!
We will still support the Dog and continue to applaud him for what he has done and is doing to clean up the Meth problem!!
Comment by Sara — November 2, 2007 @ 10:05 am
comment for Karen…WHAT!!???..your first sentance dont make sense so whos the ignorant one? And, I dont understand the topic? I think I do clearly, he said Nigger and she got offended and his son sold him out. My comment was a Nigger means the person is ignorant, so in one sentence thats what I say and you tell me I am ignorant and dont understand, and in your next comment you call Brit a Nigger because shes ignorant..and yes I agree with that point..and thats exactly what I was saying also..so it sounds like you called me a Nigger for saying it really means ignorant and then did it yourself and told me I dont understand..but I didnt get offended because someone calling me names or insulting me who dont know me does not bother me, I am to mature for that and frankly dont really care, life is to short to sweat the small stuff. If everyone went through life doing thier own thing and didnt worry about what everyone else did wrong we all would be better off. Hell, dogs a better parent that a lot of people I know…he cant help his son turned out to be a backstabber. Life goes on.

The “N” word is just that…A WORD that means nothing really. Just like the “C” word (cracker) is just a silly word. The “N” word actually means “thief and a liar”. It has nothing to do with the color of a persons skin or race.I can think of plenty of words that would actually be consiered offensive. But everyone needs a reality check if they actually consider the “N” word offensive including the black race! They use the “N” out of context all the time. And they also use the word Cracker in an offensive manner in the media DAILY! But Who cares its just a silly word!Get A life People, and find something better to do with your time, like making a difference in this world.Try helping someone for a change, instead of hurting them, or judging them.”Judge not lest ye be judged yourself”!
Comment by Man Of Color — November 3, 2007 @ 12:31 pm
The feedback on this site is surprising, to say the least. While most seem as shocked by Chapman’s outburst, but there are quite a few who support Chapman on some level. The “N” is not just a word, it’s an intent. An intent to harm or degrade a group of people. This word is universally unacceptable. That word, when spoken by any non-black person is a reminder of oppression, murder, slavery. As fr blacks who use the word, they should be reminded of the struggle of many great people before them who provided the freedom and opportunity they enjoy today. Educated people understand any label is wrong, but let’s be clear on the origin and the purpose of this word. It’s not cool or hip or urban. Words are powerful. If you read you know that. Some words, like the one we’re all debating here are used like a heat seeking missile. Very targeted. Duane Chapman launched a supremacy missile at an entire race of people. If he’s not a racist then why didn’t he call the girl in question an “asshole”? How about “bitch”? I’m sure he’s familiar with those words. He knew exactly what he was saying, and he made his point. No, this word’s definition is not “any ignorant person”. It’s sweet to think that there are a few people out there who want to make the word a more equal-opportunity slur, but we all know it’s exclusively for one group of people.
