Casey Calvert’s Death Not As Innocent As Fans and Band Professed
Well, I hate to say I told you so (no I don’t, I actually enjoy it a bit) but it seems this celeb death WAS full of mysterious circumstances, and what I mean by that is, another rock n’ roller died of a drug overdose.
Hawthorne Heights guitarist Casey Calvert’s toxicology report shows he died of a drug overdose cause by a combination of “opiates and the antidepressant citalopram and the anti-anxiety medication clonozepam.” It was an accidental overdosing, but I am sure that provides zero comfort to his family, friends, bandmates and fans.
Based on the level of vitriol that was hurled at me (read the comments on the original post for backstory), Casey must have been an exceptionally well-loved young man, full of talent and promise. I am sorry he died, but this sad story is further proof that fame and money often contribute to excess and poor judgment.
Upon Casey’s death, his bandmates issued this ironically prophetic statement “”We can say with absolute certainty that he was not doing anything illegal.”
This emphatic statement is EXACTLY why I felt this story needed to be addressed. Past empirical data shows young stars who die suddenly are rarely “not doing something illegal” and it’s idiotic to profess loudly they weren’t until all the facts in the case have come to light. It makes Casey’s memory tainted and those people making the statements look stupid. Plus, the fans must now feel the embarrassment over their chest-thumping and hand-wringing about Casey’s innocence, when in fact, his death was caused by his own negligence to look after himself.
I expect each and every one of the knuckleheads who came over wishing death and bad karma on me to apologize. I’ll be here tapping my foot impatiently, waiting.
No I won’t. In fact, I feel bad even pointing this out. But it’s a good lesson for young people to realize that old farts like me know some shizz about some shizz. I appreciate and admire your fan worship. Casey would be proud and most likely touched by how loyal you are. Do his memory a favor though, stay the F*CK away from drugs. Seriously, living to see another day isn’t a failure, it’s a gift. Embrace your gift each day.

Update: Just to be fair, here’s an article that elaborates how rare this case of drug interaction death is. This does put it in to perspective, clearly Casey was unaware how dangerous it was to mix Vicodin and antidepressants. You can never be too careful.

Supposedly he was prescribed the Vicodin after having a root canal. Makes me wonder though, wouldn’t the dentist have asked about other medication that Casey was taking? (and howcome I don’t ever get vicodin when I go to the dentist??)
Guess that’s why it’s always important to mention EVERY drug you take before a doctor prescribes you something else. Heck, even if your doctor doesn’t mention possible interactions (and sometimes they do forget), use the danged internet. There’s a PDR online that will tell you if what you’re taking might interact badly with something else you’re taking.
Some anti-depressants (and other RX’d meds) can interact badly with even the most inocuous of OTC medications. Casey should have know that, and his physician should have made him aware of it as well. My dad is a diabetic, and my mom won’t so much as give him an aspirin without checking the PDR first — of course this is after he ended up in the ER a couple of years back because a Tylenol interacted very badly with one of his meds!
Sure Casey’s medication was all 100% legal and prescribed, but just because a doctor is giving you a pill, that doesn’t make it any less dangerous.

HE DIDN’T FUCKIN OVERDOSE!!!!!!!!! >_<
It WASN’T the same fucking ‘another rock star bites the dust ’cause of a drug addiction’!
It had NOTHING to do with the rock and roll lifestyle! NOTHING!!!! Casey WASN’T fucking addicted to drugs and he WASN’T a fucking alcoholic!
he cared about his health, don’t think he didn’t. This was not his fucking fault. No one probably told him the risks of mixing his medication. And the risks were so low, there was probably no need!
But guess what, the antidepressants caused a reaction with the vicodin, it was all a horrible case of bad luck! It could have happened to ANYONE!!!!!
so just fuck off and stop trying to make Casey out to be a bad person!
Once again, he was NOT taking drugs, just antidepressants that he NEEDED!!!!
and I don’t give a fuck if you don’t care about any shit that I have to say, but at least I know what the fuck I’m talking about. At least I don’t jump to conclusions like you did, assuming Casey was just another rock star, into drugs and booze. He was far from it, so I suggest you keep your fucking mouth shut from now on and stop starting rumors!

Actually you’re wrong there…the band said he wasn’t doing anything illegal and technically he wasn’t.
He was an accident.
We do people try to ruin others’ memories?
So what if some twats take drugs for fun and kill themselves. And that others are simply unlucky.
Just leave them all alone and let their families/friends/fans remember them in peace.

I meant “it” wasn’t an accident. Not “he”.

“Past empirical data”???????????? WTF? This implies that you have specific numeric data detailing how many ‘young stars’ died doing something illegal.
You don’t. What you actually mean is that in your opinion many young stars have died doing something illegal. If I’m wrong and you do have specific empirical data I would like you to quote the source of it. This is basically another case of you using flowery language to back up an argument which has no merit.
It only gets reported more if they die doing something illegal. How can this case be “further proof that fame and money often contribute to excess and poor judgment”. Do you have further data that can back up the fact that more famous people suffer these problems than pro-rata sections of the rest of society?

you’re discusting. from what i’ve heard casey may have died because of his prescription drugs mixing. in my book that does not mean that casey was doing anything illegal, so maybe you should stop adding to the rumours and leave casey to be remembered for the nice person he was.

you’re an idiot. casey was a close friend of mine, and you are 100% wrong. casey did nothing wrong in taking perscription medication. NOTHING. there is no cover-up. there is no secret. someone somewhere messed up. whether it’s the doctors, or casey himself, i don’t know. but to say that somehow, a tragic accident, is anything more than that, is irresponsible. you disgust me.

Most excellent article. Sorry I missed this in my own drug-induced haze (can you OD on Mucinex?).
And very good points too. So, are you done waiting for your apologies yet?

I am a teenager and it is sad that casey died, but hey his band produced good music and im sure they will have more eventually. But in the mean time it’s probably good to stay away from the drugs and all that cuz ive had lots of friends that have experimented and it only makes them weaker minded and they act stupid and thats not something i find amusing. I honestly just viewed this to see the reason why he died cuz it was said when i heard that a cause wasn’t found and reading all of this i dont know what to believe. Obviously alot of people have there opinions about this which they have a right to. But whether its true or not hes gone and there will be others. Maybe fans should do a little research to see for themselves. I know im a fan and thats what im trying to do…

well i just googled it and i looked at the washington post news and unfortunatly what was stated is in fact true. Washington was the place where the event took place so i am assuming the news is accurate.
But hey im sure Casey was a good guy and bad things happen to good people. The rest of the band is still alive so do what Casey would probably want and keep listening…
rock on
