Anonymous Releases “The Profit,” The Film Scientology Doesn’t Want You To See

For those who’ve never heard of the “The Profit” well, you aren’t missing much. I have seen half of it and it’s pretty much sucktacular, but if you are interesting in annoying Scientology, which these days, a lot of people are — then by all means, have at it.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the movie and its history:

The Profit is a feature film written and directed by Peter N. Alexander. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France in 2001.[2] Distribution of the film was prohibited by an American court order which was a result of a lawsuit brought by the Church of Scientology, although the filmmaker says that the film is not about Scientology. The Disinformation Book Of Lists and The Times have characterized The Profit as a banned film in the United States.[3][4]

The film was described by its producers as a work of fiction, meant to educate the public about cults and con men. It was widely seen, however, as a parody of the Church of Scientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard. The main character L. Conrad Powers leads an organization called the “Church of Scientific Spiritualism”, and many elements about both the Church portrayed in the film, and Powers’ life have been compared to Scientology and Hubbard. The film was mainly produced and shot in Tampa Bay, Florida, and the cast included actors from the area and cameos from a few Scientology critics.

Mark Bunker of XenuTV.net, Scientology critic and apparently occasional movie critic, gives it two thumbs down for quality, but is happy it’s released if for no other reason than to satiate the public’s interest. The added bonus of making David Miscavige blow steam out his ears, and perhaps slap some body around (hopefully not one of the aging Scientologist, that’s just mean) is a real gift too!

Above is part 1, of 12 episodes. For the rest of the episodes, go here. Better hurry fast though, it may not last.

  3. The only good thing about the actual movie is, that it pretty much reflects many hidden aspects/histories of hubbard and his cult called scientology.

This movie needs to spread far and wide

  7. I think it does give a bit too much credence to hypnosis though, as if it’s a real thing that can get people to do things they don’t want to do.

Apart from that, an interesting movie. It wasn’t fantastic, but better than I thought it would be.

  9. Watch for the FBI chase scene. Hilarious. All that was missing is the Keystone cops theme music. Ain’t going to win any academy awards but may become a cult classic amongst anons similar to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I want to know where I can get me one of those necklaces. Would go great with the Vendetta mask. LOL.

  17. I think this would be a wonderful remake with Tom Cruise playing the part of himself (Tom Travis! ROTFL!!!) - or at least a version with rifftrax.

Did you notice any interesting cameos?

  19. Anyone know under what legal theory the ban on the movie has been continued? I mean, the reason for the original injunction, IIRC, was the idea that it might prejudice the proceedings originating from the wrongful death of Lisa McPherson. Well, to my knowledge the legal proceedings reached whatever end they were going to reach already, so where is the justification for continuing to restrict the First Amendment rights of the filmmakers?

  23. # 9 I think Tom Travis was in fact John Travolta. Remember when this movie was made Tom Cruise was not the golden boy of CoS. Was that Bob Monton as the doctor?

  25. D, I know you didn’t mean that you would like someone to get a beating because of this movie being leaked/posted, but it almost sounds like you did. Perhaps that could be changed.

  29. #12, John Travolta? Hmm, could be. I’d figured Cruise was a “golden boy” since risky business, he’s been in with the CoS since Mimi Rogers. Perhaps Tom Travis is a composite of the two stars?
You know, I don’t really think I’m familiar with what Bob Minton looks like (I’ll google in a sec.), but I did enjoy Stacy Brook’s performance.

  35. poptart, I find watching some sports games boring - some people enjoy them and I respect that. The “game” between CoS and Anon is still in progress and some of us are still interested in seeing how it plays out.

  37. This guy who made this movie claims to be a former VP at Universal? When? During the Silence? This thing looks like the schlock of a high school student who failed his class.

  43. Yeah, D, the lawyers of the firm made an open-letter to Anonymous for it to stop leaking out this movie :P They said that they’re going over the last hurdle of the legal processes to have it unbanned, or something to that effect. They made it sound as though it would be available for rental any time soon~ (That is, with your 2-for-1 ticket…)
