The Cult Of Oprah
Uh Oh. I always knew there was a cult in Oprah waiting to come out. In all fairness, there is likely really wonderful spiritual awakening which can be found through this “openness.” So long as people enter in it with an open mind and do their own thinking.
Oprah is just a woman, not a Divine being. As long as she doesn’t start charging, then following Oprah is ok, but she should be watched like any iconic personality. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t advocate any religion, Christian or otherwise. I advocate free will and the right to choose. I would prefer the ending of this video to be omitted.
Thanks to Ash for the link

Oprah’s had her own “cult” for so long, I can’t even stand to look at her anymore. She’s been lauded as some high and mighty arbiter of taste, but really, all she has is money and a TV show. Her taste is often all in her mouth. Blech.

I guess I should add that I stopped taking O’s word as gospel (as if I ever really did) when she suggested that a “budget” wedding should be affordably priced at a minimum of $15,000. This was 15+ years ago. Her idea of a bargain on a wedding gown was $3000.

Since I learned about “The Secret”, and that Oprah endorsed it, I went from thinking she could be a good president to being convinced she’s a blithering idiot.
Good article about “The Secret”:

looks like the only cult in that video is the cult of christianity. Don’t drink the Kool-Aid is a refrence to the Jonestown Massacre and it is just plain ridiculous and alarmist to infer that Oprah and Ekhart Tolle are anything like Jim Jones.

No, Ekhart Tolle is not cultish, but I couldn’t disagree more about Oprah. If you give anyone enough power they will use it for their own purposes and wield it dangerously. There’s one absolute which has been proven over and over again: absolute power corrupts absolutely.
This is fact. Even someone as positive and altruistic as Oprah wishes to see herself will eventually succumb to their own ego. Oprah succumbed long ago, now she’s like some kind of out of control monster thrusting her powerful hand into anything everything SHE deems worthy without a second thought to the impact she may have.
Oprah, like any massive cult of personality, is a DANGEROUS entity. She’s turning people into sheep, and the last thing this world needs are more non-thinking, non-questioning, non-logic using people.
Oprah’s power to control massive numbers of women frightens me deeply.
Any fervent and fanatical belief is dangerous, whether it be Christianity, Scientology, Islam or Oprah. It threatens the fabric of society.

yeah, but is Oprah like Jim Jones? I don’t fucking think so! I do agree with you about Oprah’s position of Power. I found myself watching her show and thinking, “who does this woman think she is to have the authority to be so judgemental”. Oprah is wildly influential, but I don’t think that she is influencing people not to think for themselves. she is trying to show that there is another way to live without the tyrany of organized religion. That little bit about breathing? extremely important. The only two things humans across the globe have in common is the nessecity of breathing and water.

I don’t see anything remotely cult-like in Oprah, and I’m surprised you would feature a right-wing crank religious video here.

If Oprah wants to be a New Ager, and tell everybody on her show about it, that’s her right. But if she’s still calling herself a Christian, that’s not right. A Christian, paring it down to the core, is someone who believes in Christ as the Son of God, not as an archetype or a guru. New Age pantheism is attractive to many people, but it is incompatible with Christianity.
Also, Oprah needs to buy a dictionary. Jealous =/= envious. In the Biblical definition, NOT the modern one, “jealous” is defined as “intolerant of unfaithfulness or rivalry” (dictionary.com). This is compatible with God as Love. God loves His people and wants to be their God alone, kind of like fidelity in a marriage. This is why exegesis is important. If Oprah abandoned her faith over an ill-defined word… wow. That’s really DUMB.
TL;DR: Oprah’s not a Christian, and should not call herself one. If she called herself a New Ager, as her beliefs suggest, we wouldn’t have this problem. (But we know she won’t, because she’d lose maybe half her viewers.)

This is so sad, that some right wing individuals are paranoid about people seeing things from a different perspective. As one travels world wide, belief systems differs. One needs to be open minded. The best form of Education as far as I’m concerned, is traveling and engaging with individuals from other cultures. We cannot say our belief system is superior to others, based on our current wealth. Wealth, power and empires come and go. That’s the realty of life.
