Howard Stern Radio Show Shake Up, Artie Lange Resigns

I listen to Howard Stern whenever I can. While some people find him offensive, stupid, pointless whatever, I find his irreverent, smart, insightful and refreshingly honest. So I was troubled to find when I checked in this morning that Howard and his comedic side-kick Artie Lange had some sort of on-air conflict (sadly I missed it) and Artie is currently “resigned” from the show. In some ways I am not surprised.

Here’s more on the row from Pet Rock:

Lange, who became a part of the show’s daily routine in October of 2001, was spotted disputing with his assistant in the hallways off the air. When it was brought up to Stern, he asked the assistant Teddy to come into the studio and discuss the situation on the air.

Lange began to express his disdain for his assistant of nearly two years because of recent money issues. Teddy retorted by implying there’s more to the job than meets the eye.

The two are slated to travel to Amsterdam this evening and the squabble began over setting up Lange’s travel accommodations. However, the in-studio dispute quickly escalated into a discussion about how much Lange finances Teddy, who is affectionately called “Teddy Microphone” around the studio.

As the argument continued, Lange became enraged and physically lashed out at Teddy, but the physical confrontation was apparently diffused by other members in the studio.

When Lange returned, he said Teddy would be “dead” had he reached him and he would be in jail.

Stern then expressed his feelings on the situation, saying he cannot condone Lange’s actions. The comedian, who has had a similar outburst on the air in the past, said he cannot guarantee he can refrain from acting out in the future. Upon hearing that, Stern said he cannot have Lange around with the potential of such actions looming.

Artie then offered his resignation; Stern accepted, but told Lange to leave and cool off. Just before Lange left he told Stern: “I’m not a good person … I gotta leave … I love you”

Teddy returned to the studio several minutes later and said there was overreacting from everyone, but did not downplay the seriousness of the situation.

Show producer Gary Dell’Abate came in to analyze the situation, but he and Stern admitted they “did not know what to make of it all.”

Lately, Artie has seemed depressed, taken to eating his way through his problems, distracted, not up to snuff and sounds as though he has sunken into a drug and alcohol frenzy. All of these things could be smaller signs of a bigger problem. I think Artie might be suicidal, though I hope I am being an alarmist.

Howard and his co-host Robin sounded extremely distracted, rushing their usual morning routines, clearly wanting to be off the air to deal with this problem. Howard is no stranger to conflicts with his co-hosts, having parted way with his close friend and head writer for the show, comedian Jack Martling, who left the show in March 2001. Artie Lange, who got his start on the skitcom “MadTV” replaced Martling and has been a great addition to the show. Sadly, Lange has struggled to overcome substance abuse problems and has at times been absent on the show and as stated above, this is the not the first issue to arise during his tenure.

Hopefully Howard will be able to intervene and help Artie through this self-destructive/John Belushiesque phase. I really like Artie, it’d be sad it he didn’t get some help. We’ll keep you posted.

  3. I didn’t get to hear the actual fight either, but I am not surprised, Artie’s been building up to some kind of blow and I (and apparently Howard and Robin) are worried about him. I love Artie!

  9. Does anyone have the Artie fight on streaming audio??? Obviously Sirius is “censoring” themselves by not airing the replay on 100.

  17. It’s strange that they’re not replaying the show on H100. The only other replay I can recall being pulled was the April 19, 2006 show where Howard went off on Sumner Redstone.

  19. Ive read various threads, I listened to the show live east coast and west coast feeds before they started running yesterdays show. I at first started to think this was just a “cliffhanger” developing. If that is the case then the entire staff deserves a academy award. They were pretty convincing.
Artie was just out here in LA and from our front row vantage point it is obvious that Artie is in trouble. I wanna feel sorry for him but we all have to deal with deamons. I think he needs to be responsable and respectful for his fortunate situation on such a large groundbreaking endevor as Sirius and Howard Stern.
Its so easy to continue with the downward spiral but is that really what you wanna be known for. Another idiot who had all the chances in the world in front of him but decides to obuse his body to death. He does need help, he has been offered help, he justs refuses to take initiative to get his life back on track. I hope you get you life together Artie, I think you are funny when you are coherant.
Healing vibrations are being sent your way, accept them.

  31. everyone else will be ok…but Artie crying and leaving is NOT good. I hope they really do call his sister to see about him. He should NOT go to amsterdam and I have total props for Howard pulling the replays. That’s respect…he’s not going to turn it into a bit and I respect that. It’s a good idea to keep it off the air so we don’t have to hear it over and over and maybe artie can come back when he gets his crap together. He is obviously blowing up for feeling he’s carrying Teddy financially…like Howard said…he should have just fired the guy rather than being abusive to him.

  33. Artie definitely adds something to the show, but lately he’s not been healthy and I think Howard knows it. I respect Howard a lot and he’s good to his people, I am sure he will try to help Artie.

  35. Artie is killing himself slowly and making the wrong choices BIG time!
he really fucked up today… i think the best thing for him to do is talk to Teddy right away… i’m sure he already has…..
it will be interesting to see what happens perhaps this will be Arties wake up call….. maybe the beggining of the end.
It was also interesting that they didnt play the replay today…..

    yeeehaw what a fun day!

  39. artie is a huge fuck-up. I hope he goes somewhere and kills himself. He’s really a viscous animal and a closet case and we saw the True Artie come out today. I hope he never comes back.

F Howard for not playing the replay today. For those of us with jobs and lives, we need to be able to hear the replay when it’s convenient for us. Censorship is WRONG. I thought that’s why Howard left terrestrial radio.

  41. As someone who has listened to Howard for almost 20 years it amazes me they have kept the Baby Gorilla around for as long as they have! I say good riddance to his bloated body/salary and welcome in someone with something to offer other than an utter waste of talent on display for all to gawk at like a nasty car accident! Here’s hoping when we all tune in on the 21st his carcass has been discovered in a seedy motel instead of occupying his chair in the Sirius studio…

  45. It was so sad what happened today. As much as I would hate to see Arty go I know that it is going to happen sooner or later. Better now when there is still a chance he can get himself some help - but he has to what to do that himself.

  47. Artie is obviously having mood swings from drug use. Also, don’t forget, when Artie misses a show because he’s “tired,” he may be more than tired, but he is also probably legitimately exhausted. As strange as it seems to say, he may be one of the hardest working guys in show business, constantly doing shows all over the country, getting up before the crack of dawn during the week to do the show, and umpteen other things he’s involved in. No wonder he’s cracking…. He was supposed to go to Amsterdam tonight with people from the show - did he get on the plane? That would be, probably, a bad idea. Unbelievable that the Howard Sirius stations aren’t playing today’s show!

  49. Forget the fight and the aftermath. I believe the bigger question is why this show was never repeated on Howard 100 the rest of the day? Word was spreading like wildfire about what had just happened, yet at the noon replay they repeated the Monday April 7th show. Howard the hypocrite pulls the show? You can just hear him if this incident had happened on anybody else’s show. Howard would playing the clips throughout the day saying,” That’s great radio, that’s great TV. I would run that 24 hours a day!” Well I’m sure this episode will NEVER make it to HowardTV,and you will never hear this radio broadcast replayed again! A REVELOUTION HAS BEGUN!? NO MORE BULLSHIT!? Yeah, right.
As for Artie, I can take him or leave him. High Pitch Mike may be a whining punk, but Artie is a big, perhaps the biggest. whining baby I’ve ever heard! WAAAAAAA! I have to get up early and work 4 days a week! WAAAAAAAA!
I cant deal with my personal issues! WAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I’m too fat! WAAAAA! To quote Joe Pesci from Raging Bull, “You wanna lose weight? Then stop eatin’,you fat fuck!” Words to live by.

  51. Has anyone read the article on Artie Lange from Playboy a few months back? His self-destructiveness has been going on for as long as he’s been alive, essentially, and this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Lange is a selfish bigot with little to no social skills, kind of like an even-worse Chris Farley. The notion that he needs to “stay” on a radio show is ridiculous and shows just how far the gossip-hounds have gotten off the beaten path the rest of us call reality.

  53. The show continues to go downhill with Artie. He’s not funny and he’s a bigot. How Howard can allow his sleeping on the job, his comments about gays and his constant unfunny interruptions is beyond me. Listen to the old Howard Stern shows if you want to remember what funny is. If Howard takes Artie back I’m canceling Sirius. Bring back Jackie.
