TomKat Trouble? Who Will Get Suri If Tom Cruise And Katie Holmes Divorce?

Star magazine, though not your most reliable source for celeb news, is reporting that Katie Holmes may be considering a trial separation from her husband Tom Cruise. Wading through the rumors can be challenging, but there are certain aspects of these “rumors” which resonate with me as a celeb journalist with a penchant for understanding the complicated and bizarre nature of Scientology and the hold it has on its celeb spokesperson, Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise is a controlling, tightly wrapped person who pays attention to every detail. This applies especially to the women in his life. Cruise doesn’t so much “court” his women, but rather “stalks” them. Katie is no exception. In Andrew Morton’s biography, which is a close as we’re going to get into the inner core of Cruise’s life, Cruise is described as an overly romantic pursuer who chases his conquests until they submit. With Nicole Kidman, his second wife, he showered her with flowers, gifts, and excessive attention throughout their entire 10-year marriage. While from the outside this seems ideal, to the object of Tom’s affection, it’s nothing short of overwhelming.

If Nicole was under tight watch and Cruise still managed to lose her (or leave her when she wasn’t towing the line) we can only imagine what Tom’s done to Katie, a woman much younger, far less sure of herself and clearly more impressionable than the “ice queen” Nicole was.

The Daily Telegraph (quoting Star) lays out the trouble in the TomKat union:

Star magazine also claims that Holmes, 29, is trying to break away from her controlled life under the watchful eyes of her husband and move to Manhattan in what will be a sort of trial separation.

A source told the publication: “She desperately needs to be on her own for a while, but there’s no way Tom is going to let her take Suri away.”

“There’s no way he’ll allow it.

“He just doesn’t want Katie or Suri out of his sight for long.

“He told her that if she goes to New York, fine, but he goes with her.”

It is understood the couple’s tug of war over their daughter has intensified.

There are also reports Tom’s tried to interfere in the close friendship between Katie and Victoria Beckham. Unlike Katie, Victoria aka “Posh” is fiercely independent and is the one running the show in her house of all boys. The alleged issues stem from Katie’s weight and dieting habits which are said to parallel the stick-thin Beckham’s. Not stated, but certainly at play, is the idea that someone other than Tom is influencing Katie. One thing’s clear about Tom “either you’re in, or you’re out” Cruise and that is: on team Tom, there’s only one head coach.

So let’s just assume for the sake of argument that Katie has had enough of Tom’s death-grip on her life and is ready to break free, what would happen to Suri?

If what’s happened to Nicole Kidman and her two children from her marriage to Tom, Isabella and Connor, are any indication, Katie will be in for the fight of her life. During my interview with Andrew Morton we discussed these very topics, and concluded that Nicole was a victim of the Church of Scientology’s “disconnection” policy. In essence, because Nicole walked away from Tom and Scientology she would be considered a “suppressive person” and her children, also practicing Scientologists, would be obligated to present their mother with a “disconnection” letter and be cut out of their lives. Nicole admitted in an interview her children don’t call her mother anymore and she communicates with them infrequently and mostly by way of telephone and video conferencing.

Glosslip Interview with Morton on Nicole’s Disconnection

So what about Katie? Well, we don’t really know what training she’s had within Scientology, or how committed she is. Brought up a devout Catholic, Katie’s family seemed shocked when she converted to Scientology. It is likely as more and more celebs come forward, as Jason Beghe did in his candid video, Katie may feel emboldened to break free of the constricting life in the CoS. If she does, she will have to choose between Suri or freedom from the cloying religion.

Andrew Discusses Katie’s World In Scientology

Mark my words, Tom Cruise will NOT allow Katie to have custody of Suri should they divorce. Not in a billion-year-contract with the Sea Org is that going to happen.

I pray this story is false, and that Katie Holmes is too naive or beguiled to question Tom and the “faith” he fervently adheres to. If she were to stray, the force of Tom and the CoS would bear down on her in such a way as to crush her very soul. Poor Katie would never survive. She’s just too fragile.

And Suri, well let’s face it, she’s the “chosen one” she’s NOT going anywhere Tom’s not.

  3. I would imagine that any court of law would see that Tom is not able to hold a steady, healthy relationship and leave Suri in Katie’s hands — with visiting conditions for Tom, of course.
I don’t know, I have a hard time imagining a court letting Tom control the kids for a second time… it wouldn’t make much sense imo

  5. Well, Katie’s now achieved her teenage dream of marrying Tom, she got that, and now she’s a mother of a darling daughter, I think she ought to reform Cruise, and help Cruise dump Scientology out of both their lives, and the both of them try to have a long marriage, MINUS Scientology’s influence. Hopefully Tom will join the bandwagon of celebrities shedding their roles as Scientology dissemination tools, and Katie looks like she’s taking the Nicole Kidman course. Rather than split with Tom, I hope she keeps Tom, and helps Tom transition OUT of the Scientology miasma! Tom needs someone who can let some sense seep into him. I’m sure Tom’s up for another wave of letting Scientology and him part ways. Per Jason Beghe and ex Scientologists, Tom already went through a long period of being pretty Scientologically inactive. I hope Katie helps him get all the way out! Chuck Beatty, ex Scientology staffer, (ex billion year staff member), 1975-2003, 412-260-1170 Pittsburgh, USA

  7. Chuck, that was insightful, compassionate and probably the most moral and positive solution.

I say we start a petition. Save Tom Cruise.

I like him, and continue to this day. He is warped by Scientology, but his heart is in the right place.

  9. With Katie being so closely guarded and isolated – I assume that she isn’t allowed to watch the news or talk to family/friends without scientology minders present – considering all staff and business managers would be scientologists – how would she even hear about Jason’s statements???

  11. I’m still partial to my pet theory: Tom’s recent “Swell Dad!” outings and photo ops are meant to build up his parental credentials, while Katie gets the brunt of psychological blunt force levied by the minions of the maniacal cult. Plus everything is on tape since Fort Cruise and the Celeb Center are a “little” wired up.

End result: Britney II, minus the substance issues. Mother who dearly cares about her kids but is portrayed as “broken” and father who, while possibly flawed, is more stable and doting.

Its all a nasty little plot designed to bring Katie in line or break her and retain Suri with a minimum of fuss in the courtroom.

Or not. Just my idle conjecture.

Tom’ll never leave Scientology. He gets far too much out of it. Would you leave a group that bent over and did everything you could ever ask for?

  17. Actually, I saw the Nicole Kidman interview you reference. She said that her kids don’t call her “Mummy”. When asked what they do call her, she said, “Mum. Or occasionally Nicole, and when they do, I’m like, hey!” and then she laughed. I know how it was reported, but I actually saw the interview. Her children don’t call her Mummy (Americans, please note, Australians and Brits don’t spell it “mommy” but it’s the same sentiment).

Sorry, I’m pedantic. I wouldn’t care at all except that I actually saw the interview. ;)

As for Katie… When she was seeing Tom, before he knocked her up, people the world over were saying, “Run, Katie, RUN!” especially after Tom’s looney tunes sofa-jumping act on Oprah. I can imagine that Katie was swept off of her feet, but it’s not like the world doesn’t know that Tom Cruise is super-controlling and a cult fanatic, so how could Katie fail to know this? Brainwashing? Does she even have a brain to be washed? Or did she just think that she knew better than everyone else who knows anything about Tom Cruise… ?

I dunno what to think about Katie Holmes. She seems to be a Stepford Wife, so… *shrug*

  23. I used to like Gooselip. Then I realized the preference of rumor to fact and slander to reality. One could of course (if one were a reporter) phone Nicole’s people and ask them outright, “Was Nicole disconnected from Mr. Cruise under the Church of Scientology’s disconnection procedure”? Hell, an honest reporter might even get a realistic reply. But not from Andres, the religious bigot.

In between DM altering the tech, he allegedly beats up on the staff members that displease him. I wonder if he learned the abusive behavior from LRH, who locked children up in chain lockers (very small storage compartments) on the Apollo.

As for asking Katie or Nichole…Katie is inaccessible, and IF Nichole really is under the Disconnect policy, she cannot speak up further or she’ll lose the small contact she has with her kids as it is.

Hey welcome back on earth. It’s not a sc fi movie, it’s reality.
She goes out a lot, compare to poor Tom who isolate himself for months without going out.

She pimped suri and is obviously aware of all the rags because, she say it and was angry in the VF interview, and also she change her hairdo because of what is say in the media

She also appears beat down always after tabloids trash Tom by using her ugly drunked face on their covers and she realize she is crewing a Legend’s image and life.

ALL TOM FANS HATE HER AROUND THE WORLD. she also better not put her feet in Japan, and in france! She polluted Paris two time in a day for fucking shopping.
She did it again the day after
PEOPLE HATE THE RETARDED FREAKATIE IN FRANCE SHE IS A SELFISH PRETENTIOUS GOLDIGGER WHO POLLUTE PARIS FOR HER UGLY EXPENSIVE CLOTHES PAID WITH TOM HARD EARN MONEY.

I hope Tom will break out with his three kids and find a woman he deserve, not a retarded freak bland idiot.

  35. I completely agree with #7. Tom will NEVER leave the CULT. If there was ever an example of “In for a penny, in for a pound”…he is it. They either have way too much dirt on him or he is just too far gone. Or both.

Actually what I think is that at some point, he realized the horror of the former, knew he was never getting out, so he went full blast on convincing / deluding himself that the CULT and all they promise…was real. This is a survival mechanism. He is a very sick man. Unless he gets help (very unlikely) he will never leave on his own. Most experts agree with this assessment & that he will never come out of it.

So Katie will never be able to get him out and will only put herself in jeopardy if she tries. I hope she comes to her senses and gets out on her own. But she can only do this if she gets away from him to gain some perspective. But he will fight that, for obvious reasons, tooth and nail.

  39. I’m late on reading the Morton book, but I’m half-way through, and I have to tell ya, I’m feeling a bit sorry for Thomas. He’s stuck in a sugar-coated Truman Show and as long as they stroke his ego and keep showing him only the shiny parts of Scientology, of course he won’t blow.

It’s from my understand that he spends a large part of his time at Gold Base (or at least he did with “Nic”) and is at the very least surrounded by $cilon handlers and staff who I’m sure limit his media exposure. To him, it’s great and helpful and cured his dyslexia. He really does have an awesome religion, it’s just not the same religion other Scientologists get.

But why isn’t he stepping up now to defend his faith? If he’ll take on newscasters and talk show hosts, even fellow celebrities, why isn’t he railing against a bunch of kids in plastic masks?

I’m thinking things aren’t all on Cruise Control anymore.

  41. Don’t be so sure that Katie won’t get Suri. First, her dad is an attorney and there was a prenup. Secondly, all that may be out the window if Katie has creepy scientology tales to tell. Judges decide these things; not scientologists. All I can say is that Katie is going to be a lot more sympathetic than Tom at any hearing.

Now, IF it were true, then I’d say she better think it through before she gets into a nasty custody battle with Mr. Cruise Control…

Also, Glosslips, I am very surprised that you have not added at least a sideways comment about the very hinky pregnancy photos of Katie, and the even hinkier “marathon” run. Sucked into a dangerous cult=being led into a life of lies.

It might take you an hour or so to read through this but first and foremost, have a good look at the pictures. I don’t know what’s up, but for sure it’s something.

    http://freekatie.yuku.com/topic/4613/t/New-pic-of-the-prosthetic-belly.html

Also please note that Katie had Suri PRIOR to marrying Tom, which, I think, dramatically alters any custody issues. Not sure about california law, but in some states if a child is born prior to a marriage the father has fewer rights. (Of course that does not take into accound the dangerous cult….and it’s faux power plays.) If pictures really ARE worth a thousand words, then it is possible that there will be absolutely NO issues with Katie and custody of Suri.

Obviously written by someone with no grasp of Scientology or Tom Cruise. Frankly, I saw all this coming the moment these alleged (emphasis: alleged) “love birds” hooked up. People tried to warn her. She didn’t listen. Now it’s her bed to climb out of … if she can.
