Anonymous, What Are Your Talents?

Kind of like “what are your crimes,” but with less cults.
Glosslip needs to lurk moar. In order for us to do this, we are staging a special contest to showcase the many and varied talents of “Anonymous” in tormenting the “church of strong believers.”
The Church of Scientology may be the “authorities on the mind,” but Anonymous, the herd of cats who slay cults, are the authorities on the LULZ. And if we need anything in this war on the brainwashers, it’s more LULZ.
Ok, so here’s the deal. Anonymous has deeply impressed us with their clever, creative and brilliant talents. For this first contest we will focus on videos, and it was suggested a good theme would be “Scientology Ads/Commercial Parodies.”
Submit your videos to dmdo1016@yahoo.com, and k and I will review them and post the best ones - if it sucks, no luck! Be creative, be innovative.
We will pick the final winner (including two runners-up) and donate a monetary prize (small, because we’s poor) to a charity of the winner’s designation. May I suggest the retirement home for Sea Org’s elderly. I hear many of them have been beaten senseless by an army of asthmatic dwarves, led by head dwarf “Wheezy”.

Dawn - mentioned this on the enturb thread, but be wary of the memes. The picture you posted is Catnarok (Longcat vs Tacgnol), not Basement Cat and Ceiling Cat. icanhazcheezburger is guilty of ripping off Caturday and is a prime example of how to piss off Anonymous by crapping up memes. Counter-raiding would be detrimental to Chanology, but it does happen. Please don’t let it happen here.

Far be it for me to tell you how to run your site, but I this is pretty much asking for /i/ or (potentially even worse) /b/ to come after you. I personally don’t think there’s as much of a split between old and new anonymous as some people would like you to believe (it’s mostly a fun way to troll each other), but having our memes thrown around like this is bound to turn some people off. If you want an art contest, I’d suggest keeping it to the topic of scientology. Bastardization of our memes has let to more than one raid in the past.
At the very least, yes that is Catnarok. Ceiling Cat is the guy who spies on you from a hole in the roof, and there is no basement cat.

Dawn, as various people have said be VERY wary about using anon’s memes on your website. The only thing worse than an “outsider” using/quoting the memes is using them incorrectly or misquoting them as in this case. I would avoid posting Longcat, Tacgnol, Catnarok and Raptor Jesus related stuff, you may get away with the Marcab Confederacy stuff as it is relevant to the campaign but don’t bank on it.
As the above anon stated you do not want /i/ or /b/ coming after you. If they do then all you can do is close your curtains and Buy A Dog and hope for the best.

Don’t get so worked up about a silly photo or if someone goofs up your meme. I think some people need to take a deep breath and get over themselves.
And I have to agree that it sucks pretty hard for you guys to come down on Dawn for just trying to have a little fun. She’s worked her butt off to try to help you and this is how she is repaid for her efforts? She is being threatened and harassed, and this is how you guys show your appreciation?

Please don’t take take the rudeness too personally. I think the hostility is more towards being reminded of how icanhascheezburger basically stole parts of our culture and tried to pan it off as their own. That you would find that picture and associate it with us clearly shows that it has at least partially worked. Also, use of some of our more archaic memes leads us to the foundations of anon, and one of the first principles we have is that if you can be offended, you will be offended in very short order. Just try not to take it too personally; we really do appreciate the work you do.
I don’t know what everyone else thinks about digging into anon’s memes. I personally don’t mind it, but let it be known that nothing found on icanhascheezburger is legit.

I take it as I am a mom of small kids, work 12 hours a day on this site alone and I really have other BIGGER issues to worry about that misuse of an image.
I am not a hard person to get a long with, and I can take being insulted and belittled by strangers on the net, you guys have NO idea how long I’ve been around and what I’ve put up with in the past, but to have a group who you’ve done nothing but defend and help, turn on you in such an undiplomatic way…it’s beyond the pale and I better wake up and smell the interbutts.

People are rude as hell. She’s obviously TRYING in an arena that she knows little about. This wasn’t an attempt to “capitalize” on memes that didn’t belong to her, it was an attempt to start a fun idea/contest.

It would be more correct if the anons who first said the picture mailed you but if no one said nothing(by mail, comment or otherwise) this could have escalated to a very silly(and not funny) situation. Yes, it’s content is two cats. But as Dawn was raging about how much time she puts into this site, I’d like to point out that the original image of Catnarok (and other high quality shoops) can also take a long time to make. It might just be “a goofy Photoshopped picture of a cat, colored and flipped and superimposed on a image of a city” to you but it can also be over a day’s work to the author. So one of the reasons people get pissed at places that rip and repost work is because they don’t seem to get the effort that went into creating it in the first place. Not to mention that the particular image used is a particularly stinging reminder of why ICHC is so shit.
How would you feel if this site was reduced to “just a goofy blog about vapid celebrities, packaged in a sparse and shitty design for a sub-par CMS”, the content reposted elsewhere and getting most of it wrong along the way before ending up as a shitty viral to be taken over by non-creative fuckwits?

How many any other Google News outlets and mainstream media sites are going to take the time to understand as much about the Anonymous culture as I have?

Dawn, I’m sorry people have been so rude to you. I was involved with Chanology until I got increasingly fed up with the amount of idiocy that people have allowed to take root unchecked.
It’s aims are still good, and your own coverage has been impressive, so I hope it doesn’t put you off too much. Scientology’s a genuinely dangerous organization who’s time is hopefully nye.
As far as all this, whilst it’s hard to make generalisations about Anonymous, particularly in relation to Chanlology, the one thing you can be utterly certain of are that all the so-called “oldfags” keen to give it the more Anonymous than thou rubbish…well seriously…just ignore. They’ve got about as much knowledge of Anon as anyone who cares to read ED.

I’m going to pick this one thing to make a comment on because it really ticked me off.
I DO know how much work it takes to do an image like that, because I’ve made them. I’ve done considerable work in Photoshop and I know exactly how much work it can be, and how much time and effort goes into something like that. Don’t assume I’m just a silly writer on a silly gossip site.
But my point is…this isn’t some super-secret club meeting in Tommy’s backyard treehouse, where you have to know the password and secret handshake to get in and can only understand what’s being said if you have your Little Orphan Annie Decoder Ring with you. If someone likes what someone did enough to pass it around for all to see, be complimented and let it go. If you don’t want people looking at your stuff, then don’t put it on the internets. After all, like I’ve said about celebs, if you put it on the internets it’s there forever for anyone to see.
Oh, and don’t assume people haven’t taken my words and retooled them for their own interests. They have.
And I totally stand by my comment about anonymous collapsing in on itself if people don’t get over themselves and fight the CoS instead of each other. I’ve seen it happen before to other organizations and if you all aren’t careful, it will happen here too. I know I’m just an old fogey outsider to most of you, but I’ve been around the block a few times and I’m not as vapid and stupid as I might seem, even if I do write about celebrities and not big important stuff.

I am sorry some assjockeys took it upon themselves to try to roast you. The ones doing that are not a majority of the movement, think of them like a radical faction. (It doesn’t make them any less of a bother, of course)

I’m going to explain something. Critics consistently prove they don’t understand Scientology. By posting selected bits of knowledge, sometimes even snippets quoted out of context, critics prove a lack of understanding. And this is the joke that prevents critics from having power. The is the LULZ. Scientology is a study of knowledge to understand it. All of your peaceful efforts only prove that you don’t understand Scientology, whereas Scientology’s foundation and cornerstone is to understand knowledge. Talk about a hissy fight! Hey guys it’s time to take a deep breath, take a walk around the block and get some fresh air. Everyone’s been going full tilt on this for 3 plus months now so we may all be feeling a bit stressed and tired out. Remember what this is about. Let’s all get our second wind and get the job done. No one is trying to piss in each others corn flakes here least of all Dawn. She’s been front and center in all this with the media and has done a fantastic job of keeping this topic on the front burner when the main stream media has been sitting on their arses waiting to see where the chips are going to fall. Anons, old and new, many of us do not know your culture and you need to grow a thicker skin here or at least give us a heads up without loping off our heads in the process. We have a bigger fish to fry at the mommnet and in time we can all get back to our own lives somewhat wiser and older and most certainly all have a better appreciation for such a global epic win. Hi D! Great coverage of the $cieno-deal, the harassment needs to be made public! While I appreciate your intent with the “prize-winning video” thing. I have to express my concern with making light of a very serious movement here. This is not a game to alot of us, we have lost sister’s and brother’s, parent’s and friends to an awful beast that is Scientology.— We, that are in the mental health fields and treat patients and struggle to “deprogram” and treat the paranoia that is mostly due to the honest-to-goodness STALKING from the scientologists. Know first hand, this is NOT about winning prizes or making a game show out of creating public awareness. The most creative prize should go to DEAD founder, LRH for coming up with this shit and convincing an entire generation of people it had actual validity! Anonymous should STAY anonymous/ do not pass go / do not collect free CD’s—someone will have to claim them, or send them—leaving the flap open for discovery of our identities. We can only stay powerful when we stay ANONYMOUS!!! Our strength is mystery…..we have PHD.’s; MD’s Law degrees, government officials, senators, teachers, hackers, artists, bartenders, FROM ALL WALKS of life! I am afraid this will deter from the ultimate goal here….which is to EXPOSE the $$$$$$cieno’s for all they are……money$$$$$$$ hungry, power players that have fucked with the general stupid public long enough. Terryeo–if the peaceful protests are considered a joke, why stalk anons with PIs, kill cats, and otherwise gaslight them?
I know dear old LRon HATED jokers (cause for “lowered conditions” and other punitive measures) but c’mon, do your e-toys electronically lobotomize your sense of humor out en masse?
I would postulate that the CoS, for not getting the joke being played on it by Anonymous (and life in general, but lets stay focused for the moment), is the one acting without comprehending. They think they have all the answers. Guess what: LRon never wrote word one about the internet and instant information dissemination. He never dreamt of the vaguest possibility of something like Anonymous in the most incoherent ravings he called his scifi authorings. At best, LRH tech could handle the 1950s-1970s. And thinks took a sharp hit at the end of the 70s if I recall a certain Snow White incident.
Oh, and don’t mess with football.

D and K, don’t get worked up about the cats thing. It’s taken down and gone and shouldn’t have even been acknowledged. Don’t get trolled because if you show that you will get trolled and go all drama-bomb then you’re going to get trolled more. It’s kind of what we do.
Re: The ICHC thing, it’s important to understand that not only did they take parts of Anon culture and mis-represent them as their own. They also decided to go, “Oh, hay, let’s not only steal these pics from Anonymous, we’ll also make approx. $6,000 per month in advertising revenue for doing absolutely nothing!” The argument can be made, “Oh, well the author should sue.” But that’s not how we roll. $cientology stalks people, lies, and litigates, not Anonymous. Doesn’t mean they aren’t going to get angry about it though.
And contest idea is a good idea. I’ll be throwing something together for it.

At enturb, a truce has been reached, really, where one was not needed. I made a mistake, and I apologized. I probably shouldn’t have cried like a baby, but hey, I am human, my weee wittle feelings were hurt. I fully understand and appreciate what the problem was, and I genuinely feel bad. We all have egos and pride and no one wants to see their culture either made fun of, monetized or adopted by people who don’t “get it”. I am still doing the showcasing, it won’t be a contest, but it will be open to anyone who is interested.
Most of the people who read our site aren’t the 4Chan folks anyway, so why single them out. The post was meant as a way of reaching out to Anonymous in a respectful way which was clearly not thought out. I am not perfect, so there you go.
I would like VERY much to move past this incident. Many people have emailed me and I get it. Most were very nice. I completely overreacted to a handful of people who were outraged.
So, that’s where we are. Any further comments that aren’t related to the video concept are just not helpful.
Thanks to all who were supportive, and my apologies once more for overreacting.

K, nobody’s going to ask you to ignore your personal opinions just because a truce was reached. Nobody has the right to tell you what to believe or how to go about doing it. Dawn, there really is a giant problem when dealing with memes and Anonymous, since these isn’t just one single group that can be classified with that term. There are loads of different versions, with their own standards on what is and isn’t Anonymous’ way of going about things. The fact that you attempt to separate them and understand them individually proves that you really do care about what’s going on and I’m sure nobody is going to fault you for that.
The main problem here is that the people who decided to shoot off at you are most likely the original Anonymous, the previously mentioned “oldfags”. These are the Anonymous that went after Alex Wuori, the ones that took down multiple people for their own enjoyment. That’s not us, obviously. As to the icanhascheezburger point, yeah, I can personally see it as annoying. I can also see how other people would want to keep it away from infecting their personal social mores, though not to the point of harassment and being belligerent towards you. Those anons can gb2gaia and have fin buying new clothes and looking soooooooo kawaii lol ^_^. You just have to keep on doing what you’ve been doing from the beginning of this, keep looking to the truth of the matter and reporting what you see as the truth, until you no longer want to keep up with it.
As to my personal opinion of what has been going on, the people that originally posted… are correct. /b/ and /i/ don’t care who you are or what you do, and that isn’t just my opinion. I’ve seen them go after people for less crap, and even though you do have the right to post Catnarok up there, I agree that you should play it safe and not have to worry about anyone going nuts. I appreciate what you’ve been doing with your coverage of Anonymous vs. The Co$, but like I said, I want you to be safe.
My final point is, Dawn, we really do appreciate what you’re doing here. You don’t have to cover any of this, and you’re the only one that I’ve seen who has covered the protests consecutively. You take an active role in trying to understand what’s going on and don’t take sides lightly. You’ve been going through your own research on this, something we encourage everybody to do, and I have nothing but respect towards you for that. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
