Snark In The City: Can The Women Of SATC Keep It Together Long Enough To Promote The Movie?

I am going to admit something that certain women will find unbelievable: I have seen only one-and-a-half episodes of Sex And The City. Why? Well, for one thing, we don’t have HBO, and the only reason I saw what I did of the show was because there was a free promotion going on at the same time the SATC series was wrapping up, so I saw half of the next to last episode and all of the last. That, and oh yeah…I found out I just don’t care.
In an attempt over the years to try and figure out the appeal, I’ve seen pieces of episodes here and there, but I have come to the conclusion that I just don’t get it. If it’s your kind of show, great…it just isn’t mine. Frankly, there were two reasons I tuned in to the episodes I did…Baryshnikov and Noth, two yummy pieces of man flesh.
So with that in mind (and don’t say I didn’t make it clear), we go to the movie premiere of the superfluous SATC movie, which took place in London over the weekend.
Considering reports of bared claws and fangs between the cast members, I was expecting to see photos of ripped couture and torn fingernails at the premiere in London:
[Sarah Jessica] Parker and Kim Cattrall are apparently at such loggerheads that the latter is going to great lengths to avoid any meetings.
On Sunday night Miss Cattrall apparently ordered the driver of her Audi A8 to use the staff entrance at Claridge’s once she heard Miss Parker was being dropped off at the ballroom entrance.
A source said: “It’s that bad. Kim can’t stand her. It’s no secret among those who worked on the film.
“But of course both are professional and have not let the rivalry get in the way of doing the public face of the job.”
Kim apparently didn’t even stick around after doing her red carpet part of the promotion, skipping out on the premiere to go to dinner:
Clearly wanting to dispel rumours of a rift, a spokesman initially said all four women had watched the film.
Told by the Daily Mail, however, that there were pictures of Miss Cattrall leaving a restaurant the spokesman could be heard cursing under her breath: “They’ve got pictures of Kim going out for dinner. What are we going to do?.”
Last night publicist Ruth Dallatt acknowledged that Miss Cattrall did leave the cinema, adding: “The reason that Kim and Mario [Cantone] did not watch the film is that they promised their families that they would watch it for the first time together at the premiere in New York.”
Of course, that could be seen as a dig at the movie premiering in London instead of New York, which is where many of the series’ die hard fans thought it ought to be.
But Kim doesn’t seem to be the only one disappointed with how things have worked out:
Miss Cattrall’s dispute with Miss Parker apparently began over their paycheques for the film.
But she is not the only one to have a problem with the leading lady.
Leaving the premiere, Cynthia Nixon could be heard commenting on Miss Parker’s flamboyant Philip Treacy hat
“What was SJP wearing on her head?,” she was heard to say.
“What was going on there?”
A source said: “There’s not a lot of love lost between them either.”
And it really must be said at this point…is anyone surprised? You’ve got four strong female personalities…I’m definitely not shocked that there were rumors of tension and cattiness. I’ve always said that you can’t do anything with several women at once, because (generally speaking) they all believe they are the boss and they all want to do things their way. You won’t catch me doing a girl’s day out…I’d rather have a root canal with no anesthesia.

But if the women of SATC can be professional enough to not only do the red carpet, but shoot an entire movie, and make people believe that they are the best of buddies, then they deserve their paychecks. After all, acting is a job, and part of their job is making you believe the unbelievable. So big props to them for not turning the catwalk into a catfight. Let’s hope they can continue behaving in a professional manner.
I must ask…was there a reason for this movie other than money? I watched the last episode, everything was wrapped up, Carrie and Big ended up together, so why mess with it? And what is up with SJP’s clothes and hair? For one, she always looks like she’s trying too hard to be “unique” and “eclectic”, and she just comes off looking “weird” and “dopey”. The green dress at the premiere wasn’t so bad, it was actually kind of cute and different in an understated way…but the hat had to go (later in the night, it did). And her hair always looks like she’s growing out a bad perm and dye job. I love the length, just do something with it.
Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered just who it is that is responsible for SJP’s kooky outfits in the show, here you go…meet stylist Patricia Field.

What is up with everybody’s buttugly shoes? I don’t want to hear anyone make fun of my shoes ever again. At least I can walk.

I am glad to see that I’m not the only person of the female persuation out there that can’t get into Sex and the City. I tried watching it with my fiance’s mom and sister and I just couldn’t get the appeal behind it. If anything, I felt embarrassed watching it. I most certainly could have done without seeing Kim Cattrall’s boobs.
So you are not alone in the no love for SATC vibe.

“In an attempt over the years to try and figure out the appeal, I’ve seen pieces of episodes here and there, but I have come to the conclusion that I just don’t get it.”
Basically, as a guy, I would state that if your girlfriend is really into Sex in the City, run, and run fast. I know because my sister is really into it, still, and I would advise anyone to run from her, if she wasn’t my sister. It caters to rank materialism, narcissistic ignorance, and form over substance– listening sis? That’s why it got big in the first instance. Lots of chicks (and guys) want to live in that world.

#2: Absolutely. I have to agree…even though there was some redemption of the characters from their vapid, materialistic lives, the basic premise of the show seemed to be self-indulgence at any cost. They’re looking and looking and looking and they don’t even know what they are looking for. It is painful to watch.
Maybe I’m square, but I know there’s more to life than that. It’s almost as if they were saying that one cannot find happiness until one churns through as much of one’s selfish desires as possible first.

Totally agree AnonymousNow and K! Isn’t it funny how after many seasons of shows where the plot centered around being “free” to skank up NY in any way you please, with whomever you please, in the end happiness was shown to be staying with one person, having kids, a normal life, and moral stability? Kind of cancelled out the entire former purpose of the show, if you ask me.
I don’t have HBO either, but when it got syndicated I checked it out to find the appeal…..and found none.
P.S. I don’t blame the others for not wanting to be around SJP in that hat. It kind of looks like a big “Look at me!” sign above her head. Not cool to draw attention to one’s self like that in an ensemble act.

Yes, Capcom…that’s it, precisely!
The show is fictional…it took place in an alternate reality. So many people, though, try to live like that, they see it as okay, and screw up a good part of their life in the process. You can’t script life, no matter how hard you try.

I disagree, except about SJP’s hat.
SATC is a wonderful show. No one I know actually lives like that, so to me it’s just a fantasy of how the other half might live. The characters are all relateable, and I after watching I can certainly say, I have a Charlotte friend, a Samantha friend, and a Miranda friend. Like you said, we all dream of a Mr. Big to come and wisk us away.

Obviously many people will watch the show and realize it is fantasy. But you’d be surprised at the people who do have this mindset. After all, the original stories (which were the basis for the show) were based on one woman’s real life adventures in NYC.
And there are people who live this life who look at things such as this show (along with other things) and use it as some justification of their lifestyle. Believe it or not, there are people who really do want to live like this…or do live like this. I’ve been at this long enough to see it.

I admit that I was a fan of the show, although I was never really taken in by the incredibly unrealistic materialism, or the bed hopping. The characters were interesting and they had ups and downs, they truly f’d up and made wretched mistakes and pulled themselves out.
As a singleton, I related to the depiction of independent single women trying to make their way in a couple centered world, and trying to determine what they needed and wanted out of life and from the opposite sex.
That said, I am completely not interested in the movie. I did feel they wrapped it up very nicely at the end, and this movie just feels completely unnecessary. I enjoyed SATC during its time, but its time has passed.

I didn’t get Sex And The City either. And for me to not like something about sex is weird.
I think it was the episode where the old lesbo told the lesbo in training “I want you to stick your finger into my pussy” that made me just toss my hands up and say “I give up. No more trying.”

I’ve seen all of two episodes of SATC and didn’t care to see more. I’m not interested in seeing the movie or anything further of the promotional tour for it, or anything involving SJP. Yawn. So over all the “nothing”.

Good points Katie, the singleton aspects rang very true. LOL Brooke, I am SO glad that I only saw what I saw of it in syndication on a non-cable station!!! :-p
