Memorial Day

Just remember that it isn’t about cookouts and car races and having an extra-long weekend, although there isn’t anything wrong with any of that stuff.
No matter your political affiliation or personal convictions, if you love and value the freedoms we have, take a moment today to remember and honor those who helped guarantee those freedoms.
We will not forget.

I have my dad’s dogtags from when he fought in WWII, and I wear them every Memorial Day and Independence Day as a reminder to myself and (hopefully) others of what these days are all about.

“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”
-First Lady of the United States Eleanor Roosevelt, 1945
“Freedom is not free, but the U.S. Marine Corps will pay most of your share.”

Both of my grandfathers served these great United States, both of them Marines. I honor all those fallen soldiers.

Thanks for the reminder Dawn. I’d find myself just doing normal weekend things. (not that there’s anything wrong with that)And then I’d see a huge flag flying somewhere. Or I’d see a sedan dressed with an American Flag and a P.O.W. flag, and I’d flash the driver a thumb’s up.
Or I’d see something like the picture on your site. An eloquent reminder of why we take these days off.

This has always left me feeling a bit of controversy in my personal beliefs. On the one hand, I believe non-violence is always the way one should go, no matter what. On the other, I love my country and the men and women that fight everyday to ensure that I and others like me have the ability to peacefully say whatever we want. If it weren’t for their bravery, or the ones that came before them, we wouldn’t have the beautiful democracy we enjoy today.
I have always believed that peace must be won, for there are always those people that want to destroy it altogether. Whether they be terrorists overseas, or evil, dangerous cults, the U.S. military have always been there to make sure that we shall never be silenced. I know that I have a personal love for the military, and not just because all the different anthems of the Army, Navy, Marines and what have you played together with the National Anthem can get me crying like nothing else.
I recall a time not that long ago when young men were coming home from Vietnam, not to the hero’s welcome the Vets of WWII got, but to words like “Babykiller”, “Uncle Sam’s Murder Machine”, and the like. These words, coupled with the fact that many of these brave people came home less some friends they made over there, are cutting enough to drive anyone insane.
Nowadays, you are (very deservedly) treated with respect, honor and high regard if you served your country. People are proud to know your name and proud to have served with the faction that they chose. It’s a great time to have served your country, and as long as we keep that perspective, I’m sure that we’ll be able to make sure every soldier still in the Middle East will know they are in out hearts and minds, waiting for their safe return.
On the topic of heroes, I’d like to take some time to do the obligatory thanking of all the members of the Police, Fire Department, Doctors and anyone in a profession that requires strenuous work to make the world a better place. Anyone that puts their lives at risk to ensure that this country sleeps a little more soundly each night, anyone that dedicates their lives to educating the future, deserves a giant think you. Yes, it is a bit tacky, but it’s something that I agree with 100%.
Thank you all, and good night.

K wrote this post, not Dawn. But I am sure she appreciates the sentiment, but not nearly as much as I appreciate her
