Sharon Stone: The Chinese Earthquake “Bad Karma”?

A reporter took the opportunity to interview Sharon Stone about the earthquake in China…because she was on the red carpet at Cannes, and where else would you ask this sort of question?

…first, I’m not happy with the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans, because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else, and so I have been very, concerned, about how to think about what to do about that, because I don’t, like, that.  And then I’ve been, just, concerned, oh, how should we deal with the Olympics, because they’re not being nice to the Dalai Lama, who’s a good friend of mine.  And then all this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and I thought, ‘Is that karma?’, when you’re not nice the bad things happen to you?

She goes on to mention that she received a letter from the Tibetan Foundation, saying that they are going to go help and they wanted her to do a little sort of writeup about that.  This made her realize that sometimes you have to “put your head down” and help people who aren’t nice to you.

I’m sure the Chinese will take great comfort in the fact that Sharon Stone (who’s claim to fame involves lips of a different sort) believes that since she reached an epiphany, it’s now okay to go give aid and support to people who have suffered through a devastating earthquake and to assist their injured and help them bury their dead loved ones…because it’s nice to be nice.  Glad that she’s achieved the level of understanding that comes when you realize innocent people are hurting and need help.  Because, you know, it wouldn’t be okay to be unkind to the Chinese because they are unkind to others, right?  After all, nobody should be unkind to anyone else.  And Sharon certainly would never consider being unkind to people.

Wonder if she thinks the United States deserved 9/11 or if England deserved the 7/7 bombings as well?

Yep, that’s karma alright, oppressing the Tibetans, and poisoning other countries’ children and pets with lead and melamine. What was the Olympic Committee thinking when they chose China? Well, it would be a shame to ruin the Olympiads’ lives by deleting their chances to compete this year, sometimes one chance is all they get. It’s a really tough call all the way around for that…but not for sending aid to the quake victims. Good thing that we have Sharon to bless us with her wisdom. :-B

  9. Sharon Stone is unbelievably unkind and has no sympathy for the victims of a natural disaster. I don’t think she is worthy to be a representative for any products. I don’t think she should be hired to be an actor. She can only be a very bad politician with all of bial BS views. I would say she is an extremity that should not be counted as a human being with a good heart.

  13. Agreed, she is a dumbass alright but how many people know that majority people in the earthquake area are Tibetan? How many people really know Tibetan reality and what Dalai Lama oranization is and was, the truth? Can you trust Main stream media?

Most people may have kind heart to wish for the best of others but many of them do not know that they might be hurting more people without the knowledge of facts. Sharon Stone is a good example.

  15. Maybe people with higher IQs know better about Karma. Maybe those 10,000 children who perished in the earthquake WERE not ‘being nice’. I am so impressed with Sharon Stone’s wisdom.

I read in the paper four teenagers died in a car crash inside a burning car in Chicago, USA. I will call Sharon now for an explanation.

  17. Have the idiots expressing outrage over her comments seen the whole interview or read the entire quotes? She never said that the earthquake was karma, she was just asking it as a rhetorical question. And anyone with any knowledge of English (that excludes the majority of Chinese) knows that rhetorical questions have no genuine answers. She also goes on to state that she has learned to be of service to everyone, regardless of treatment received from them. Could the Chinese learn from her and start being nice to everyone who disagrees with them (tibetans, hmong, uyghur etc.) , instead of taking imaginary offence over a figure of speech? The Tibetans are already serving China instead of bashing it, maybe China could do the same. Sharon Stone is blameless in this.

  19. The most ironic part is that 1/3 of the Chinese population killed in this earthquake were either Tibetans and Qiang , a Chinese minority with closest blood ties to Tibetans. So, who were being not nice here? who were being punished here?

If Stone wants to do some better research on Karma theory, she’d better learn some basic Chinese geography first.

Chinese government did a good job trying to rescue all the victims in this disaster. People were lucky that Chinese government didn’t have an IQ as high as Ms Stone’s. Otherwise, the government would think, “Oh, well, could this earthquake be a karma on the Tibetan people because Dalai Lama was doing all those anti-government activities? “

  37. Poor quality construction, lack of building standards and big earthquake = disaster.

Could have been Mexico City or even Northern California. The answer in the design and engineering of buildings in earthquake prone areas - and even then, if a quake is strong enough, it will not matter how solid the construction. If Katrina taught us anything it was that we are all just a natural disaster away from living in third world conditions.

That said, the Chinese government is vile, oppressive and inflexible. It’s not karma that did it, it’s their lack of compassion for their own people.

Don’t get me started on the junta and Myanmar. F*ckers. Third world mentality/totalitarian govts. are the scourge of man.

  39. Yes, I’ve seen the interview. In fact, I posted the interview, and I took my quote directly from the interview.

She asked herself a question. Not a rhetorical one, but a genuine one. And she decided that while she didn’t like the Chinese for actions against the Dalai Lama, and thought perhaps the earthquake was “bad karma” for what they have done, she would then decide to be nice to the Chinese people.

Completely contradicting her earlier statement about how she doesn’t think “anyone should be unkind to anyone else.” Unless it’s her, pre-epiphany. She wasn’t nice to them UNTIL she had this moment, and now she’s wanting to be nice. I’m sure the Chinese are grateful.

While you assholes (read “Mark” and “Capcom”) debate about the meaning of karma and the dimwitted response of a completely irrelevant flea on the face o f humanity, 30,000 people remain missing, and the families of over 60,000 people are grieving for the loss of their loved ones, and countless others are desperately trying to recover physically, mentally and financially.

The are all from the third world except Made in China is the best in quality and price so far. And China is the only one 3rd world country comes out relatively speaking, as the most peaceful, politically stabilized, treating it’s people a bit better than all the other picks here so far. Take your picks no one need to buy anything made in China. But marketing is marketing. The goods and their prices are the only things that a buyer will pay attentions.

I am all for an open market, but the US trade issues with China, and the crappy quality of Chinese products, not too mention their gross environmental abuses (and all countries are pretty guilty of that these days, but China is by far one of THE worst) make me not want to buy their poorly produced products (I won’t dwell on the lead issue as it will cause my head to explode).

I am VERY anti-Chinese government and anti-Chinese product. But I am NOT anti-Chinese people, I feel terrible for the victims of the earthquake disaster and the atrocities their government has exposed them too.

There’s a big difference between the people and the government, but clearly “h” above is incapable of distinguishing between the two points.

But if all indications are correct, you are just a brainwashed troll looking for a rise - so congrats.

Actually “karma” is something to all the living beings have to face, it is not a bad word. too many Chinese people don`t know what karma means, they are too much believe accidental phenomena or the cummunist. I also found the translater made wrong to use the word in Chinese “baoying”, it should be “ye”. Tibetans when they are under any suffering, they could say it is karma for advicing themself, so suffering is less than expected.

I look carefully. If an item says made in China, I don’t buy it. I don’t care what it is or what it costs. China, stop selling dog and cat fur, and trying to pass it off as fake fur! It’s an abomination what that country does to those animals! And Americans, stop buying fur, period, and it will take a huge bite out of the Chinese fur trade! No human needs to wear the pelt of an animal for the sake of fashion. Not today, not ever. And as for the citizens of China, I feel deeply for all those who’ve lost their homes and loved ones in the earthquake. May they find the peace and comfort they need, as they try to recover from this terrible tragedy.

The people of China are suffering greatle, if a 7.9 Quake hit Chicago or St. Louis Americans, I wonder if Americans would act the way the people of New Orleans reacted to Katrina, or the way the Chinese reacted to this tragedy.

You do not hear of looting or crime in China. You do not see people spewing hate and violence. You see a nation standing in morning for 3 minutes of total silence and contributing billions from their meger salaries and savings to help thier fellow contrymen.

You see their leaders fly out within hours to personnally lead the recovery efforts, not GWB like at all.

I love America and all she has stood for, but this tragedy in China has shown what is best about China. They deserve our support and prayers.

  73. kk - I said nothing about the practice of eating dog. That is a cultural thing. People eat insects in some cultures, too. But, it IS about appropriate animal welfare. So, in your opinion, it’s okay to skin dogs alive just for their fur? Hang them by wire nooses until they are strangled to death? Draw and quarter them while they are still breathing? Bludgeon them to death? All for the use of their fur on clothing and trinkets? It’s disgusting, vile, and an absolute abomination. Approximatelhy HALF of the dog and cat fur from China is sold in the United States to places like Penneys and Burlington Coat Factory, and is often bought by unwitting customers who thought the fur was not real, because it was labeled as not real. If the consumers in the United States will take a stand and NOT buy anything that has any type of fur, whether it’s labeled as real or not, we can do a great service to the companion animals that are being slaughtered - in terrible ways - by the millions in China. And we CAN put a stop to the Chinese dog and cat fur trade.

Remember the words of Mahatma Ghandi - “One can measure the greatness and the moral progress of a nation by looking at how it treats its animals.” The United States isn’t perfect in the area of proper animal welfare, but we are working on it. Putting away people like Michael Vick for what he did is a huge step forward, and sends a very clear message. But, China has a LONG way to go to even begin to measure up, in many, many areas where animal welfare and human rights are concerned.

  77. Tony, I just left my company in disgust after 32 years, because they “paid $1 for the chinese to manufacture a product & pocketed $10.00 for profit”. As I left, we were all training our cheaper, off-shore replacements, and pocketing none of that extra profit in our paychecks. And I agree H, it is totally pathetic that companies like the one I left, blindly trust the cheaper foreign version of their products that America used to make with quality and pride.

Don’t worry Jerry, I was just being snarkastic about her comment, not debating the definition. :-) I don’t want anyone to be hurt, and I support offering help to anyone who needs it in times of tragedy. But I question the Olypmic Committee’s judgement in choosing China for the games this year, in light of their human rights problems and the serious economic situations there. One can only hope that China’s politicians can learn something from these untoward events, about how we must all support each other on the planet.

  79. I agree Capcom…K, you did open a sore spot, but one that really needs to be discussed! Capcom, congratulations to you for taking a stand!

I believe that all Americans should ban “Made in China”, period. I was truly shocked when I found out the realities of the Chinese dog/cat fur trade. How those animals are treated during their lifetimes and killed is beyond comprehension. Did you know that German Shepherd dogs and short-haired cats are favored, because it’s easy to dye the fur and pass it off as faux? Shame on our own American government and lawmakers for not closing the loophole that allows fur-trimmed garments with a pricetag of less than $150 not to even require labeling! And did anyone know that the fur-trimmed cat toy they just bought at Petsmart or Petco, came from China, and is trimmed with the fur of another cat or dog that was killed to sell you a pet toy!

Loss of $$ is a big motivator. If consumers worldwide would ban “Made in China,” the loss of revenue would show the Chinese government that the world will no longer stand for their abuses towards humans and animals.
