Teen Actor Turned Evangelical Christian, Kirk Cameron,Takes A Swipe At “Kooky” Scientology
I remember watching the sitcom “Growing Pains” as a teen and having a HUGE crush on Kirk Cameron. Don’t look at me like that, most girls my age did (including my five years older sister!). Then I found out he went all religious fundamentalist on me and that was the end of that. It’s kind of hard to feel lustful passion for a guy who frowns on unmarried lustful passion.
In a ContactMusic article, Kirk has very few nice things to say about Tom Cruise’s religion, Scientology:
“I think Scientology is kooky. I think L. Ron Hubbard had some imaginative ideas, but the bottom line is that it’s false, not real, and my advice to people is don’t get mixed up in cults and false religions but seek out the true and living God and try to honour him with all your heart. You can do that by reading the Bible.”
Kirk’s story is fairly unique in the world of Hollywood. Playing cute and snarky teen Mike Seaver on the “Growing Pains” show propelled Cameron to atmospheric heights of popularity in the teen world of celebrity worship, but unlike his peers, Kirk didn’t use this to propel him to great levels of fame, but instead found religion and pursued a career inside his faith.
While this made him an outcast in Hollywood, he continued a television career, but not as a teen heartthrob, but rather an evangelical minister. Here’s more about Kirk’s ministry career from his Wiki page:
Cameron states that he used to be an atheist, but when he was 17, during the height of his career on Growing Pains, he developed a belief in God.[3][4] After converting to evangelical Christianity, he began to protest what he perceived as immorality in Growing Pains, ostracizing himself from his fellow cast members. He did not invite them to his wedding. A decade later, Cameron agreed to appear in a Growing Pains TV movie, and apologized to his TV family, attributing his prior behavior to his lack of maturity.
Cameron currently partners with fellow evangelist Ray Comfort in training Christians in evangelism. The two have a ministry together called The Way of the Master, which includes a television/video series, a multimedia website, and a live daily radio show The Way of the Master Radio Show with Minnesota talk show host Todd Friel.
Obviously Kirk has a motive here in take shots a Scientology; he’s an evangelical Christian. This however, does not make him incorrect. Scientology is a CULT, and I would caution those interested in the organization after reading about Tom Cruise or Will Smith being followers, to do some research. Cults like Scientology end up taking more than just your money, they can also ruin your life.
Kirk, while you may be a bit extreme for my tastes these days, I still appreciate you speaking out about the dangers of Scientology. Every little bit helps.

Sounds like another trade for idiocy. Scientology, Christianity, Islam, Moonies, Hare Kriishnas and the Torah are all comfort zones for those who dare not venture out of their personal boxes.

Well, at least with the three major religions there’s no billion year contracts and you are allowed to take medicines which might save your life, but in general, I agree. People need to use caution before embarking on any “new” faith.

There’s no comparison between Christianity, Islam, etc and $cientology, a quack science posing as a religion to rob people blind. $cientology is criminal at its very core and has been since it was thought up by the nut Hubbard.
Good for Kirk, his story is so refreshing.

While it’s good to see celebrities speaking out against Scientology, it’s a shame that all Kirk can say is that it disagrees with his evangelical Christianity. Scientology has committed so many bona fide abuses, ones that disgust the religious and non-religious alike, that it seems parochial to mention that it is not a biblical faith.

“There’s no comparison between Christianity, Islam, etc and $cientology, a quack science posing as a religion to rob people blind.”
Hrmph, well, Scientology was most likely started to stroke the ego and stuff the bank accounts of its founder, yeah. But if you read _A Piece of Blue Sky_, there’s a convincing case to be made that even Hubbard actually believed in the stuff he made up, at least late in his life.
And I’m not so sure Islam (not to mention Mormonism) didn’t have the same kind of roots - a charismatic individual proclaiming himself the fount of Truth…
As for Cameron, ugh. I’m not going to accuse him of being a liar (he seems to me to just be deluded), but the other two big cheeses in his ministry, Ray Comfort and especially Todd Friel, are VERY dishonest, and the evengelism and debate tatics they use are really slimy (they seem to like straw men and appeals to emotion most). Those looking for a laugh might be well served by looking up “ray comfort banana” (as well as the very funny Gisburne2000 reply, “Atheist’s Nightmare - God’s Magic Banana Factory”) or “kirk cameron crocoduck”.

Oh. I forgot the Mormons and their magic underpants…wake up people. Embrace each new day with wonder and awe, revel in it and look to more science.

There is a law of Nature or law of God called “Physiological Reactions†that is the true secret behind Scientology’s Dianectic study technology.
The LRH discovered that when you passed a misunderstood word—you manifested many reactions of various types: Yawning, sleepiness, not there feeling, dizziness, blurry eyes, nervousness and dozens more.
Being the liar that he was, he claimed that Dianetics was “‘his†invention and not a law of God; he hid the fact that it is our human inheritance since time began.
Granted that his power of obnosis was the best in the world, his crime against humanity was to make a “religion†based upon the falsehood, that it was his invention or creation and not a law of God.
There is an EBOOK that explains and reveals the dark and evil secrets of this cult and a few others.
It teaches a person the ways of natural self-healing and also exposes this cult for the thieves that they are.
Go to: http://selfhealingdata.com/
There you will learn to self-heal and learn how to expose the crimes of Scientology.

This is my first comment after over a year of faithfully visiting this site. I think Kirk Cameron is absolutely wonderful! How many of us would be willing to unashamedly stand up for Christ and proclaim to everyone what we believe, knowing our peers would mock and ridicule us? Not many, i think. Fakers sure don’t do that. The thing is, when you come to know Jesus Christ and have a relationship with God you realize that none of that matters anyway. You just do what you’ve been called to do and don’t look back. But try explaining that to a non-believer… it’ll never make sense because it’s something called FAITH. I applaud you, Mr. Cameron!

Not all of Christendom believes that we don’t have free will. And Christianity should not be lumped in with Scientology. The two just aren’t comparable.

On a basic level, I’m just glad that Kirk Cameron spoke out about Scientology. Especially since the CoS sells itself by saying they are compatable with Christianity and other traditional religions. So I think its good he’s telling Christians and others out there that it is indeed a cult.

Except all those other religions tell you that when you walk in the door. They don’t poo poo on you 15years and $50,000 later down the road.
Plus lets not forget, $cientology is a Cult, not a religion!
