Morgan Freeman Injured In Accident; Bernie Mac Battling Pneumonia; Christina Applegate Diagnosed With Breast Cancer
Wow, things seem to come in threes. There seemed to be a series of bad news items come out over the weekend, so I thought I’d tackle them all in one spot.
First, venerated actor Morgan Freeman was involved in a serious car accident Sunday night while in Mississippi:
TMZ is reporting that the “Dark Knight” star, and Hollywood’s favorite voice of God, was in a car accident around 11:30 Sunday night, just north of Ruleville, Miss.
Freeman was airlifted from the crash scene to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The news of the wreck was initially reported by MediaTakeout.
Freeman’s condition is unknown. State troopers told reporters that the actor was talking before he was taken to the hospital.
An unidentified female passenger was also in the car. Her condition is not known.
Morgan and his wife have a ranch in Mississippi and spend much time there. It’s being reported that he may have fallen asleep while driving and ended up flipping his car:
WHBQ in Memphis is reporting Freeman was on his way home to Charleston when the smash-up happened. Bill Luckett, Freeman’s friend and co-owner of Freeman’s restaurant Madidi, said his buddy was sitting up and talking at the hospital.
One source tells TMZ that Freeman has broken several ribs and injured his knee. His female passenger, we’re told, had to be cut out of the car using the Jaws of Life. A source says she’s suffering from bumps and bruises, but is “all in all in good condition.”
Next, comedian and actor Bernie Mac is still in the hospital recovering from a bout with pneumonia, and reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated:
Despite dramatic rumors about the state of his health, “Bernie Mac is still alive and being treated in a Chicago hospital for pneumonia and is expected to make a full recovery,” his rep tells PEOPLE. [...]
“Mr. Mac is responding well to treatment and will be released soon,” she said in a statement. “He asked that his privacy and that of his family is respected while he gets well.”
I had pneumonia over the winter and it’s nothing to fool around with.
Lastly, actress Christina Applegate, 38, was diagnosed with breast cancer and is receiving treatment:
Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, but the disease was caught early and the actress is expected to fully recover, her publicist said.
The Emmy winner’s cancer was detected through an MRI ordered by a doctor and is not life-threatening, publicist Ame Van Iden said in a statement Saturday.
This brings home to all of us the importance of yearly checkups by a doctor and frequent self-exams on our own. If you’ve never done one, here is an easy-to-follow video on how to perform an exam on yourself (no substitute for a doctor’s appointment, of course). Early detection is key.
Our best wishes and prayers for recovery and strength to all concerned.

We’re big Morgan Freeman fans in my house. I’ve not been to his club over in Clarksdale but many of the blues musicians I love have played there and it’s not that far of a drive- it’s definitely on my “To Do” list.
I’m glad he’s all right and hope he mends quickly and comfortably.
