Amy Winehouse Might Have Brain Damage
This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs.
Despite what it might look like, I’m not trying to be funny or poke fun at singer Amy Winehouse. No, it seems that Amy just might really have damaged some brain cells with two major overdoses in the past year, including a 36-hour hash marathon and enough illegal drugs to kill a horse:
The singer, 24, suffered two major overdoses, with such bad convulsions that they were “like a scene from The Exorcist”.
And her body is so frail from drug use that doctors were scared she would break bones during a fit.
A close pal of Amy’s laid bare the truth – warning medics said one more overdose will probably kill her.
Her first OD was back last August, when she overdid it on cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, ketamine and crystal meth. She was advised at that time to seek psychiatric help because she displayed “multiple personality traits” that made her a suicide risk.
And remember the last time she was taken to the hospital, when her father said to the media that it was just a bad reaction to her medication? Well, only if she’s toking up for medicinal purposes:
Her second overdose was in July – when she inhaled an “inhuman” amount of hash that left her vomiting uncontrollably and hallucinating.
At the time devoted dad Mitch, 54, said it was a “bad reaction to her medication”.
Medics are worried Amy’s brain was damaged by the cannabis overdose – she displayed symptoms normally associated with schizophrenia.
The pal yesterday said: “The future is bleak, bleak, bleak.
“Mitch does everything he can to protect his daughter – but his ‘explanation’ for Amy’s hospital dash in July was just simply untrue.
“She had smoked an inhuman amount of hash which resulted in acute cannabis poisoning. You have to take a s***load of pot to suffer that severe a reaction.
“It’s thought she had been smoking it for 36 hours.
“Amy’s fits were as bad as the convulsions she had during her overdose in August last year. No one has mentioned her meth use before – but that stuff is truly nasty.
“She is in need of years of psychiatry and medical treatment if she has a hope.”
It’s bad enough that Amy, for whatever reason (childhood trauma related to her parent’s divorce, depression at being separated from husband Blaaaaaaaaake, etc) has decided that drugs are more important than her talent, obligations, and life. It’s bad enough that she has decided to self-destruct rather than deal with her life in a mature fashion. But to have her legions of fans, who come out en masse whenever I do one of these stories, stick up for her and say how misunderstood she is and how everybody just needs to leave her alone and let her live her life, is just as sickening as Amy’s throwing her life down the toilet. Here we have the consequences of “leaving her alone” and “letting her live her life”…a drug addict with possible brain damage.
I like Amy and I would love to see her clean up her life. I realize that she has a problem. After a while, the drugs take hold and you’re just along on a crazy rollercoaster ride. But at some point, you can make the decision to get off and seek help. And of all the stars I’ve seen in the press doing self-destructive things, Amy is the one who most obviously needs serious, intensive help. She needs to forget her career at this point and lock herself away in some hospital far from the madding crowd and focus solely on getting better. If she does not, we will be posting a story about her death before the year is out and then read comments from people who will be shocked and surprised and who will blame the media for all Amy’s problems. Amy seems to want to destroy herself, but even people with that mindset can be helped.
Sorry, folks…the media has it’s bad side, but it’s Amy who must ultimately take responsibility for her life. And if people (including her family) continue to cover up and make excuses for her obvious problems, and continue to squeeze every last drop of money out of her for as long as they can, and continue to stick her up on a stage to be a freak show for everyone to gawp at, and continue to let her do whatever she likes, then they will be just as culpable as Amy herself. You know who you are.

She is fading fast. What a loss.

I don’t care about Amy Winehouse at all. Don’t count me as a fan protecting her or someone making excuses.
With that said – Your understanding of drug addiction is sadly lacking. You come off as a total knowing and unfeeling asshole.
Frankly, I think you’re an attention whore. You’re exploiting some facet of whatever fame she supposedly has to make your piece of shit rag more popular.
Good going! It’s a great way to create a useful dialog!

Winehouse is over, don’t care anymore.
BTW, where’s the Scientology news? Has Glosslip been Fair Gamed or what?

#2: Since you have no clue about what I have or have not dealt with in my own life regarding abuses, I suggest you keep your misinformed comments to yourself. I will not love Amy to death…I will tell the truth about what is going on with her no matter what people like you think of me.
It’s called taking responsibility for oneself, and if Amy is not in enough right mind to do so then her family needs to step up, stop making excuses, and get her help. Period.
#3: No, GL hasn’t been fair gamed. I’m sure Dawn has more CoS news. But, ultimately, this is a celeb blog, with the occasional sideline into current events, things of interest, and yes, Scientology, not the other way ’round. Plus, Dawn is the one who does the CoS updates, and her life has been quite busy of late. I’m positive Dawn hasn’t quit posting stories on it, but we are moms and wives as well as bloggers. So have a little patience with us…things have been hectic in both our lives.

Alan, you are pretty darn funny. Why on earth did you take this post personally, especially if you don’t care about (or, as it would seem, know anything ABOUT) Amy Winehouse?
I’m not Amy’s fan, but it’s always a shame to see a young person not care about themselves. She’s my age and she looks like she’s 25 years older than me! She looked fine in photos from three years ago– it really is amazing what drugs (especially meth, ick) can do to a person physically as well as mentally.
I have a friend kinda like Amy. Claims he has one true love (and seems to believe it) but looks elsewhere for temporary love, and temporary solutions when something goes wrong (drugs, alcohol, leaving the country with no money or chance to make it overseas, etc). He is self-destructive and it’s hard to watch him ignore any help his other friends and I try to give him. Or worse, he admits we’re right and then goes off and sleeps with someone he knows has AIDS because… well… only he knows why.
I doubt Amy will live to see 2009, unfortunately.

I find it interesting that the doctors are talking about multiple personality traits and schizophrenia. I have a good friend — a musician — who drank like a fish in his early 20s. He was always late for gigs and even missed some until I had to fire him from my band. He finally dried out and started seeing a psychiatrist. In therapy, he was able to acknowledge that he had been “hearing voices” and hallucinating since his pre-teens. In time doctors will conclude that people whose addictive problems go way beyond the pale with a total unwillingness to get clean are, in fact, using drugs and alcohol to self-medicate mental illnesses such as schizoprenia, uni-polar depression and bi-polar manic-depression. After all, there are people with addictive problems get clean permanently or at least for months at a time. This one doesn’t so maybe she is self-medicating and has been schizophrenic all along.

#7: I think that’s a very interesting statement. I believe so many of us do self-medicate, albeit unknowingly, undiagnosed problems such as schizophrenia and other forms of mental illnesses. If this is so with Amy, then leaving her alone or simply getting her into rehab won’t do it…she’s got to have some intensive counseling and help.
