Britney Spears To Open VMAs

No, you didn’t do the Time Warp again back to last September, when Britney infamously did epic fail at the MTV Video Music Awards in the middle of what turned out to be a very public mental breakdown.  It is 2008, but yet again we are doing “Britney Opens VMAs” posts:

Well, now it’s official: Britney will appear at Sunday’s VMAs, which take place at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and begin at 9 p.m. ET. Although the pop star will not be performing, she will open the show.

The singer — who has been nominated for many VMAs but has not yet won one — will be on hand to see if this year is her year. She’s nominated for three awards: Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and Video of the Year for “Piece of Me.”

“MTV has long played an important role in my career,” Spears said in a statement. “How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs? I’m excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated.”

It’s unclear exactly what Britney has up her sleeve, but based on the singer’s previous VMA appearances (check out some of Britney’s past VMA performances right here), it’s sure to leave people talking.

I didn’t think “Piece of Me” was that bad, although the lyrics left something to be desired.  It certainly wasn’t vintage Brit, but then again Brit isn’t vintage Brit…the concept was good but the presentation left something to be desired.  Personally, I think she needs to move on from her teen pop-tart days and reinvent her sound, but I’m not sure she has the chops for that.

Has it really been a year?  The time goes so quickly *sniff*.  This kind of holds a special place for me because it was Britney and her disastrous VMA performance who facilitated, albeit indirectly, my introduction to writing at GlossLip.  Thanks, Brit!

Regardless, it will be interesting to see what she does.  I’d like to see her take a tongue-in-cheek look at her problems, show that she knows how to laugh at herself, and show that despite the year from Hell, she has the ability to bounce back, not only as a performer but as a human being.  After all, that’s the best thing we can aspire to…because at the end of the day, when the sparkly costumes come off and the makeup washes away and the lights go out, you’re left with yourself, and if you are comfortable with you then the rest is just gravy.  Brit seems to be doing a zillion times better than this time last year.  Keep it up!

  1. I am not sure Britney *can* take a tongue and cheek look at herself. I believe Britney suffers from a debilitating mental illness and is still a fragile-minded person who needs more time to heal her fractured life. This woman essentially unraveled before us and putting her in the spotlight again only reinforces our consumptive need to see a facade of normality, when in reality, she is still under the care of her parents as a grown woman with children.

That said, I am ever so grateful k was inspired to join Glosslip, even if it was because of Brit-Brit’s disastrous performance. I cross my fingers she will stay on target this time, I’d love to see her regain her dignity.

  3. Well, I agree to a point. But I do believe that everybody, even people who struggle with mental illnesses, need a purpose to their life, something to do when they get up in the morning. Whether it’s your kids, your marriage, your job, your career, volunteer work, whatever it is, everybody needs something to do and a goal to reach. It gives people a purpose in life.

Brit hasn’t really done much since the videos for her album were released and she had her major public breakdown. I agree to not give her too much, too soon, as that could be a huge step backwards…but if she wants to do a small thing, a small step, as long as it doesn’t interfere with her recovery I’m for it. And if she is able to make some sort of reference to her problems and to the fact that she’s meeting it head-on, I think she would see that people are pulling for her to get well.

And I’m pretty sure I can stay on target and regain my dignity…wait, did I have any to begin with? ;)
