Whoa, can't believe it's 2008 and people are getting wiggy about babies getting human milk. Oh, well, I want to say, great post, GlossLip. I actually was told my contractor (while he was building my house) that he found it odd that I nursed my baby in public. Funny thing, it was 7am and he was in my bedroom at the time (installing tile)!!! A la Ms. Barbara "uncomfortable" Walters, some people just have too much time on their hands. Come visit me at One Hot Mama anytime.

my plan was to breastfeed for a year, but my milk supply was very low and non-existent by the time my baby was 5 months old. i envy those mothers who can bfeed as long as they want, but thank God for formula.

Brooke, I agree with you. I think if the point of breastfeeding is the supposed health benefits of the milk, then please either be discreet or have it in bottles in public. (As I can certainly see where a breastfeeding mom would not want to do so in a bathroom).
Yes, I bottle fed my kids. And with that said, I can count on my hands the number of times I even had to do that in public, as I would plan my outing according to their feeding and nap schedule, not mine. And my kids had the normal amount of colds, ear infections, etc. In fact, my daughter has never had an ear infection and she is almost 2.

And D, I'm sorry, but breastfeeding a toddler, almost preschooler? Yuck. Kids are eating real food and whole milk after 12 months--why do you need to still be breastfeeding at 3? If the kid can ask for it and undo your shirt to get it, it's far past time to be doing so.

I've always been a bit of a stick in the mud about some things. I remember when I was nursing my daughter and I was at my mom's when some of my aunts and uncle were visiting. My mom came in and hustled me out of the room and read me the riot act for breastfeeding (under a blanket wearing a nursing shirt being incredibly discreet). She told me to go to another room. I'm like, my uncle has had five kids and a passel of grandkids, I'm sure this isn't the first time! She apologized later but I didn't forget it...I made a big deal after that of getting up and going out of the room whenever I had to nurse her just to be obnoxious to my mom. Right or wrong, it ticked me off that I was being as discreet as possible and respectful to those in the room and I still got torqued on.

I think it can work as long as people are discreet and respectful of others' privacy. I don't do the whole bare breast earth momma thing right out in the mall, but then again I think people have the right to feed their child.

Oh yeah, and I agree about the "private photos" thing. Private my butt, they were taken with the express purpose of trying to revamp their images.

I agree. I think it's great to breastfeed but it makes me uncomfortable to see it done in public. I don't know why-it just does.

And as for the "Pitt's Private Photos" line, well they're hardly "private".

Oh, ick. Ick. Ick. I'm sorry, but I am not a breastfeeding supporter-- at least, not in public. It makes me uncomfortable to see something suckling a woman's nipple while I'm out trying to do whatever I need done. I don't think a mother SHOULDN'T do it, but I'd appreciate it if they were more discreet. Put a blanket over your chest, go to the bathroom and do it, etc. I know it's common for some mothers to feed at home by breast and then tote breast milk in bottles whenever they go out.

I would be ESPECIALLY bothered if I saw a woman breastfeeding her toddler... it it can talk, I think it's weening time, personally (I know it's been said to continue breastfeeding for as long as you like, but... man, I get the willies just thinking about it).

I know my thinking is "wrong", but it's probably because I was adopted and thus never had the breastfeeding experience. I'm not sure if I had I'd remember and think differently, but I was fed by bottle until I was weened at whatever age. I had rashes and the squirts occasionally, but I never had to be rushed to the hospital, and I wasn't a weak little thing. The thought of sucking on my mother's nipple, even as a baby, sounds like a horror film.

I hope my opinions change when/if I ever have a baby, but since I've only ever associated nipple sucking with foreplay, who knows. I never even saw a person breastfeed until I was about 20 years old, and it really bothered me that she just whipped it out in a restaurant. I remember losing my appetite and just leaving.

I know it's natural and healthy, but so is sex, and I certainly don't want to share my intimate moments with anyone. I think breastfeeding is, in a totally different sense, intimate and shouldn't be done out in the open in public without a blanket or something to cover up with. And I get really upset when commercials tell mothers not to be ashamed and to just do it-- don't be ashamed, but I don't want to see your boob and anything attached to it, and there are many many others who feel that way. Most people carry there infants around with a blanket handy anyway, so it's not like this is a ridiculous request.

I also am a card-carrying member of the Whip Them Boobies Out And Nurse Those Chitlins Club. :)

Only bad thing is, with mine being so, uh, bountiful, I'm now also shopping for a Cross-Your-Knees Bra. (posthumous hattip to Johnny Carson for that one)
