Will Smith’s Son Set To Star In Karate Kid Remake

Is this something the world really needs?  Jaden Smith, the impossibly adorable son of is-he-or-isn’t-he-a-Scientologist Will Smith, is set to star in a remake of The Karate Kid:

Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit “The Karate Kid,” which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith.

The film will be produced by Jerry Weintraub (who launched the original franchise) and Overbrook Entertainment’s James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. Will Smith, who is the 10-year-old actor’s father, co-starred alongside Jaden in his feature debut, “The Pursuit of Happyness,” which Overbrook and Escape Artists produced for Columbia.

The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor. [...]

The younger Smith, who next stars in “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” is a martial arts practitioner.

Great.  Just what we need.  More 80’s movie remakes.  The kid is cute and all, I’ll give you that, but srsly.  The Karate Kid was a great movie, why mess with it?  What, is nobody inventive enough to come up with movie ideas of their own?  What’s next, a remake of The Breakfast Club or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off?  Oh man, they better not even touch Ferris.  I’ll have to go all wax on/wax off on somebody if they even think about touching Ferris.

Where was I?

  1. There’s actually a remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show in the works. Some idiot thinks it’s a good plan to remake a cult classic. Arrghh.

I’m convinced that there are no new ideas in Hollywood any more. Well, no, I’m sure there are great writers with great ideas, but the studio executives, being studio executives, don’t seem to want to take a chance on anything different, fresh, or new.

  3. Dont’ know why they insist on trying to remake classics. (not that I thik the Karate Kid is a classic) But, they should just leave them alone.

Will smith’s son sure is cute, too bad he wil be brought up as a Scientologist. Anyone that spends that kind of money on a school that will teach Hubbard tech MUST be a Scientologist. In his recent interview, he babbles on, and nobody can understand what the hell he is talking about. So yah….. he is a Scientologist.

  5. Right, this really makes no sense. All Hollywood makes now are different versions of movies with the newer “stars” in them. Let’s just make every old movie over again, filled with all the new celebs! :-p

  7. They are just playing on our childhoods and the shows we grew up on. Updating and repackaging them for our kids, hoping to double up on the same show they already own the rights to!

    FYI: Scientology is a cult
I hope the rumors about Big Willy aren’t true….

  9. Pat Morita died just 3 years ago and Pat Morita will always be what’s good about ‘The Karate Kid’.

A remake of this film will be most unwanted and definitely unwelcome.

Dear Hollywood, Remaking old films is a gamble, but remaking classic films is like giving us the middle finger. Sincerely, Go Hang Yourselves.

  11. You’re right, I’d hate to be the actor that has to fill Pat Morita’s Miyagi-shoes! No can do.
