Patrick Swayze Hospitalized

Actor Patrick Swayze, currently in the middle of promoting his new television show on A&E, has reportedly been hospitalized with pneumonia:

Patrick Swayze has developed pneumonia and has checked himself into a hospital for observation.

The news was revealed Friday at a press event for the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles.

“As we arrived here this morning we have some news,” A&E President Abbe Raven told People. “Patrick Swayze has checked himself into the hospital. However, he asked us specifically to go forward with today’s panel. We wish him the very best with his recovery.”

The actor, who is battling pancreatic cancer, was going to appear at the TCA to talk about his new show, “The Beast,” scheduled to air Jan. 15.

But don’t count him out yet.

“Patrick is undergoing treatment and he’s still fighting,” a source tells People. “He felt so bad that he couldn’t be at the TCAs. He’s fighting and doing well, and that’s all anybody can hope for at this stage. He is not at death’s door. Nobody ever knows with cancer, but he’s doing alright.”

I fought pneumonia back in the spring and it’s difficult enough when you start out healthy, I can’t imagine the battle when you’re also battling cancer and dealing with chemotherapy.

The actor recently sat down with Barbara Walters and gave a revealing interview in which he disclosed that yes, in fact he is scared:

“I’ve never been one to run from a challenge,” Swayze told Barbara Walters in his first interview since his cancer diagnosis last January.

Still, when asked if he was scared, Swayze told Walters, “I don’t know. I will be so either truthful or stupid as to say no. But then I immediately, when I say that, I have to say yes, I am.”

“You can bet that I’m going through hell,” Swayze said. “And I’ve only seen the beginning of it.”

But despite the odds (many people diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer only live about six months, and it’s been a year since his diagnosis), Patrick is determined to make the best of his life:

Beating the odds, Swayze has lived with his cancer for a year and has stayed out of the spotlight, except when he appeared on the televised “Stand Up to Cancer” fundraiser last September. The crowd leapt to its feet when he walked onstage.

“I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life,” Swayze said, “not lived in the shadow of cancer, but in the light.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with Patrick and his family as he fights this new battle.

  1. He told Babbawawwa that he stills smokes, when she asked, with an emphatic, “Yes!” I seriously hope that he stops soon. I know from experience that smoking is a huge blockage to healing during treatment. Even if you don’t smoke, the doctors always ask if you’re smoking (among the 100 other questions they ask you every time you go for a treatment).

  3. Ive never know anyone with pancreatic cancer to live past 90 days after diagnosis. I hope Patrick can beat this cancer for many years.

I had pneumonia in 1996, it almost killed me and I was in great health, very strong.

The fluid gelled around my lung and they induced me into a coma and did emergency surgery, partially removing some of my right lung to get the gelled fluid out.

It took a full year before I was back to 100% normal strength wise.

    Prayers to Patrick!

  9. He is definitely a fighter, it seems like every photo I have seen of him since he was diagnosed, he has been in good spirits, plus working on a project through it all- that is a very strong man right there. And an inspiration to those who do have cancer (and even those who don’t), by showing that you can continue to fight through obstacles, no matter how hard, and to continue doing what he has been, instead of letting those obstacles set him back.
I hope he can pull through this, because of the severity of having pneumonia while on chemo for cancer. I will be sending positive healing thoughts his way.
