America Not Ready For The Glambert – Kris Allen Wins AI Season 8

adam-lambert-1

We just watched the American Idol Season Finale and by now everyone knows sweet little Kris Allen won Season 8, beating the infinitely more talented Adam Lambert, once again proving that AI is a friggin’ popularity contest, not a talent contest.

While Kris is plenty talented, cute and likable, he’s not even in the same universe as good a singer as Adam Lambert, but sadly, because Adam is gay and not afraid to show it, I think in the end it hurt him, as much as Carrie Prejean’s ignorant comments at the Miss USA pageant hurt her.

Just like in politics, Americans refuse to let the pendulum swing too far one way or the other, so while on one spectrum Prejean must suffer the wrath of her ignorance, Adam Lambert is forced to suffer the wrath of America’s ignorance.

The silver lining to all of this is of course, Adam will still have a tremendous career and might even be better off not having that notoriously fickle “Idol Winner” reputation dogging him. I give both he and Kris credit for handling the results with total class and I wish them both well.

America, gay people contribute to every facet of society in ways that are incalculable and enrich our lives immensely, they aren’t going away and marginalizing an entire group of people based on archaic and backwards perceptions is about as pathetic as it gets. They’re here, they’re queer, they can sing better, get used to it.

  1. Boooooo!!! The most unjust result in the history of this show. This country is so messed up! Grow up America–Let’s put your homophobia in the closet and grow up. It’s 2008 my disgraceful fellows.

  3. So…disappointed by both the results and Americans. It’s so unfair!!!

  5. I don’t think this is a gay/straight thing. I think it’s about Lambert being “in your face” all the time. Even when doing a ballad he was over the top. I felt like he never let the audience into his heart and mind. There was always an invisible barrier.

  7. Isn’t it a trend that the runner-up always comes out better in the end anyway? They have more creative control than the ones signing the big AI winner’s contract. I’m sure other producers and big wigs were salivating for him to not win, so they can snatch him and his talent up. Either way, he’s not going anywhere for a while.

D, I love your way with words. I couldn’t have said it any better myself.

  9. I’ve heard many say that Adam was more talented and should have won. That is very subjective, so not as clear-cut as you are espousing. The had two very different styles. No one can definitively state which one is better for anyone other than themselves. Or it has been said that it was homophobia that was Adam’s downfall. I’m sure there was some of that, but not all of American Idol’s viewers. Both of these excuses are not honest, but rather, quite biased to bolster your own beliefs. The show HAD to be fixed, or the majority of Idol’s viewers HAVE to be homophobic.

But in the end for me, Adam was too much of an over-the-top performer for my tastes. His shrill shrieking was intolerable to listen to. When he say quiet, I thought he was great, but that was only rarely. In the end, I believe Chris received the Danny vote. Most people preferred Chris’s singing over Adam’s shrieking.

  11. I don’t think this was an anti-gay vote at all, and yes, it is a popularity contest more than a talent contest. AT&T announced here in Little Rock that of the 100 million votes cast, 38 million came from Arkansas, Kris’ home state.

The local news said that Kris and Adam have become good friends, so I think that Adam’s gracious reaction afterwards was both classy and reflected a sincere joy for his friend’s good fortune, and I think Kris would have reacted the same way.

Both should do well in the future.

  13. This is what hurt Adam–Rabid Lambert fans. Period. They became so emotionally attached to this beautiful creature, that they got overly protective and spewed their vile diatribe toward anyone who preferred another contestant. And it all backfired.

Popularity contest? I didn’t even know who Kris was until 70s night, and I wasn’t expecting him to last considering how popular Adam and Danny were. America always loves an underdog story, and there was no clearer a story than this one. America also likes the guitar.

We will definitely see Adam become a rock superstar, no doubt. Kris will become the likes of Jason Mraz and John Mayer. What I would like to hear is Kris Allen doing his own acoustic interpretation of “No Boundaries,” that is actually good (a formidable and difficult challenge indeed).

My name is Malin and I voted for Kris because I prefer his style of music.

  17. Well said Dawn (as usual) In fact, I choose to get your take on AI for the same reason I voted for Adam every week…..It is always entertaining..never boring!

We are big Adam fans in our house. His voice is so pure and strong and he is SO entertaining. I think Kris is really good too in that “radio friendly” way. I like the singer/songwriter stuff and think he will do well if they give him decent material.

Although I don’t agree with #4s other comments, I did think he had a point about the invisible barrier. Adam was so good and so polished that we didn’t get to see too far beyond that gorgeous smile. I voted for his amazing voice, but I am sure many cast their vote for personality, personal story, ability to connect with the audience… etc.

Bottom line… whether due to his gayness, his genre, the Gokey fan vote, America’s limitless appetite for more of the same….Adam lost and thankfully….it just doesn’t matter! The only real consequence for Adam fans is dealing with the non Adam fan’s gloating. At least that is what my teenage daughter says!

  23. You are right Lori, I already see the anger spilling over into forums all over the net, including the cliched “get over it, my guy won and yours didn’t.” Ultimately, people can’t take these competitions personally, while Adam may have lost because of his flamboyance and risk-taking, ultimately (and anyone with a decent ear would agree) Adam is technically the better singer, but as we all know, AI isn’t a singing contest, but a popularity contest.

We just aren’t there yet as a country to step out of our comfort zone. Fortunately, Adam will do well either way, and hopefully so too will Kris.
