Jon and Kate + Lots Of Hate Has Millions Tuning In

The season premiere of TLC’s “Jon and Kate + Eight” premiered on Monday and attracted 9.8 million viewers, beating out the “Lost” season finale which had 9.3 million viewers. On every level, that’s wrong. Then again, we are seeing a shift in people’s viewing habits and while “Lost” is a creative and entertainment masterpiece, even Jack and crew can’t beat out real-life human drama and the public’s voyeuristic inclinations.

A build up to the Season 5 premiere was a landslide of tabloid stories featuring the estranged Gosselins, including allegations of infidelity against them both, ongoing hysteria over the exploitation of their children, the vast sums of money they get for their “reality” show and all the freebies Kate keeps sticking her sweaty, greedy paws out for.

The above clip is painful to watch, as it’s clear that Jon and Kate are not comfortable being around each other and each tries to proclaim they are there for their kids and doing their best to make it work. Um…ok. Forgive my reluctance in buying that argument, but if they both wanted to do what’s best for their kids and salvage their marriage, they’d walk away from the monster they’ve created and works things out in private.

But here in lies the issue. What Jon and Kate have done is essentially trade their marriage, privacy and happiness in for cash, fame and recognition — let’s face it, the results were a foregone conclusion.

I can’t think of one reality show featuring a family that has gone well. MTV has single-handedly killed three marriages: Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Carmen Electra and David Navarro and Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler. What exactly did the Gosselins and TLC think would happen?

The sudden mix of money and fame can be a lethal combination for even the best intentioned people, but when you have two mismatched people like Jon and Kate, it’s almost a guarantee for disaster. Clearly Kate made the decision to trade her soul for money and Jon turned in his nutsack long ago.

Regardless of how you feel about Jon or Kate Gosselin, what people are watching, paying for and finding entertainment in, is the disintegration of a family. Is this the kind of thing we as a society should be encouraging? Perhaps America should take the advice of Kate’s own sister-in-law and stop watching all together.

Of course, I refused to watch from the beginning, so I can’t miss what I didn’t have!

  1. Have you ever thought that maybe we (the watchers) are actually watching in hopes that we see a REAL marriage have issues and God willing they can and will work through it? Why so negative? Think POSITIVE…and most importantly the “watchers/viewers” love the show. :)

  3. If you watch this show with that in mind, you are setting yourself up for failure. I also don’t believe for one second that most viewers are watching hoping they will “work out” their problems. People watch it because they are perverse and sick and enjoy watching others in misery. It’s human nature and it’s shameful. Call me negative, that is RICH!

I refuse to watch people go up in flames, exploit their children and abuse the institution of marriage simply for a quick buck. Feel free to love the show, but be honest with yourself, you are a rubbernecker gawking at a horrible trainwreck.

  5. I didn’t watch the show last night, and never have and never will.

The thought of these two people getting rich off a lie and their kids makes me sick.

I hope the show gets yanked, and they can go back to taking care of their children in a normal setting if that is at all possible, even though Kate has turned into a monster. But ater all…she didn’t get there herself people.

They should save what money they made for their children’s future.

Keep watching…. and Kate the monster will stay and only get bigger.
Without viewers, they have no money. Without the money, Kate will HAVE to revert back to being an everyday mom.

If there are people wishing for things to truly work out for this couple and their kids, then they should stop watching the show, plain and simple.

  7. Simple solution. You want this couple and kids to have a happy life? STOP WATCHING THE SHOW.

The show created Kate the monster in the first place.
Without viewers, there is no show.
Without the show, they cannot fund them any morte. Without the funds she will have to go back to being a regular mom
    Easy isn’t it?

  9. i think she is blaming him and complaining that he doesn’t do enough or that she thinks she does ALL the work.
if this is just a blamefest forget it, no one can live under those conditions.

this is not going to make him change…if that is what you were hoping.

she didn’t exactly pick a winner. what made her go for this guy…in case you can’t tell, he’s not into her. and yeah he is probably too laid back for her…..he is from hawaii…she is from the east and a nurse.
    they’re styles of being clash.

she is type a he is type b

i know this after 2 minutes of film and finding out their background from wiki…that is all i know.

    i am so amazing.

    ok..!
    hey!!!
    interviewer!!!
i dont’ like your tone of voice and questions…its sounds like you are impatient with them and want to lead them down a path of your choosing…what is with the ’status’ question? did they ask you to sit in judgement of them and decide who is to blame for their unhappiness and crappy relationship?

ps: why would people want to watch this unhappiness?

i can;t stand listening to her. i won’t watch the show…but i dont’ have cable anyway so there

interviewer, you are not a marriage counselor and her voice is really annoying.

  11. Here in LA there is an expression: “Bad publicity is better than no publicity.” It actually is in their interest to misbehave. In fact, it makes them a lot of money. No one is tuning in to see well-behaved people. Nor do they expect to see talented people. They just want to see well-known, highly publicized people.

  15. Did you know their ratings soared after the adultery? That’s the problem with these shows–there is a huge financial incentive to act badly.
