Scientology’s Crimes And Abuses Are Finally Hitting The Fan

scientology-miscavige-tease

It is with a sense of awe and splendor Glosslip is reporting on what may be the most damaging coverage of the cult of Scientology ever written.

The St. Petersburg Times Newspaper unleashed a three part series, that must have cult leader David Miscavige popping veins in his head. This three part series is of such EPIC proportions, that we were only able to outline the stories and touch on a few of the most maligning accounts and testimonies given by four top ranking Scientology defectors. It would have taken pages and pages to tell the whole story and even more pages to include all of their quotes.

We will provide links to all three parts of this story directly to the SP Times, so you will be able to read the stories in their entirety.

The St. Petersburg Times has been a thorn in Scientology’s side since the cult first skulked into Clearwater over three decades ago. Dubbed by Scientology as The SP Times, as a derisive play on their own “SP” term, which stands for Suppressive Persons, the SP Times has continued to be one of the only mainstream media sources investigating Scientology’s continued abuses and shady activities.

In 1975, the Church of Scientology purchased the historic Fort Harrison Hotel under an assumed name and have maintained an overwhelming presence in Clearwater, buying up land and setting up shops in the seaside town.

Residents of Clearwater watched their own town slowly being taken over by Scientology and the cult has been sucking up real estate like a vacuum, and thankfully the SP Times has been reporting their every move. But this time around, people seem to be finally listening. This story is being covered globally and in all facets of the media.

Although Scientology has tried numerous times to squash The SP Times in the past, their latest series of articles written by hero staff writers Joe Child and Thomas Tobin reveal an even more damaging look into the cult of Scientology that has never been reported before by a mainstream outlet. So damaging are the allegations many critics are wondering if Scientology will survive this huge blow.

The SP Times were successful in securing interviews with four top exec Scientology defectors. Much of what they revealed is a reaffirmation of rumoured abuses that have been circulating for years, but with their testimony, give a new urgency and credibility to these audacious and harrowing accounts. These revelations are pointedly attacking Scientology cult leader David Miscavige (Tom Cruise’s bestman at Cruise’s wedding), who has managed to slink under the radar for far too long. Not since the death of Lisa McPherson in 1995, has Scientology’s been under such deep scrutiny and these four high profile defectors, Mike Rinder, Marty Rathbun, Tom DeVocht and Amy Scobee’s testimonies, may be the final threat to drive the cult into the ground OR an even worse alternative, underground.

Part one of the series deals mostly with reported beatings of staff members. The defectors claimed they witnessed church leader David Miscavige beating several members many times over the course of many years, with the beatings becoming more severe and widespread as the behavior became accepted as the norm. We also included a bizarre account of Sea Org members, dressed in their quasi-military uniforms, who were forced to play a perverse game of musical chairs to the tune of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This elaborate, but twisted game was conceived by cult leader Miscavige as a means to prove his members loyalty. Whomever was unable to get a chair, were met with the threat of being shipped off to distant countries and disconnected from their families. David Miscavige’s sadistic game of having control over his minions gives real insight into the mind of Scientology’s enigmatic leader. It’s no exaggeration to suggest any evil dictator throughout history would have been proud of Miscaviges craven tyranny.

Part two of the series, deals mostly with the cover up of the death of Lisa McPherson, which we will discuss later in this post.

The third and final part of the comprehensive series was a wrap up of the testimonies and dealt with the “overboarding” which was used as punishment within their Sea Org.

Over Boarding Off The Apolllo Ship

Actual Picture Of OverBoarding

Overboarding is when someone gets thrown in a pool or lake as a punishment. This punishment started back in 1968 and was ordered by founder L. Ron Hubbard himself. Sea Org members were thrown right into the ocean off any of the three ships that Hubbard owned. Depending on the severity of the punishment, different decks in varying heights, were used. Some decks being 25 feet from the water’s surface below. Even when the Sea Org moved on to land, this punishment still continued.

Below are the four defectors at the center of this stunning investigation.
rind

Mike Rinder, was top lieutenant in the Sea Org (Scientology’s fake navy). Rinder left Scientology two years ago, but had been a member since he was 18 years old.

rath

Marty Rathbun-was a top lieutenant and in Scientology for 27 years. Marty, perhaps unable to truly disconnect from the emotional attachment to his former “faith,” still practices Scientology today and still offers auditing in his home.

Tom DeVocht

Tom DeVocht, third from the left, oversaw the church’s spiritual headquarters in Clearwater and was vice president of real estate and construction for the cult. He was in for 28 years, and left with a “free loader debt” of owing the cult $98,000.00 of which he thankfully has not paid them one dime. Free loader debt is money owed to the cult for courses taken, which they will try to collect from you once you leave.

amy1

Amy Scobee was a top exec who helped create Scientology’s celebrity network and worked for the cult for more than 25 years, joined the Sea Org when she was just 16 years old.

These defectors were quoted as saying:

“the leader established a culture that encouraged physical violence.”

A video compiled by the SP Times features interview with Marty Rathburn and Amy Scobee who talk about the violence and beatings doled out by David Miscavige, and in a nutshell what this news breaking three part series uncovers. Click here to watch.

Scientology also plans on opening up the private files of these four defectors, which are supposed to be confidential and only for the church’s eyes. These well-guarded files chronicle EVERY Scientology member during their Scientology auditing sessions on the e-meter. Lawyers and spokespeople claim that these files will divulge comments from these defectors which will clear the cult. But it will also in turn finally prove that Scientology will use member’s private files to blackmail people. One also has to ask if the cult is doing this to set an example and to curtail any more defectors from speaking out?

If that’s the case, I say open up the files on all members who have defected and files on all top execs and put all the cards on the table. Of course I refer to files that haven’t been doctored up by the cult.

A list of what defectors revealed:

• Physical violence permeated Scientology’s international management team. Miscavige set the tone, routinely attacking his lieutenants. Rinder says the leader attacked him some 50 times.

Rathbun, Rinder and De Vocht admit that they, too, attacked their colleagues, to demonstrate loyalty to Miscavige and prove their mettle.

• Staffers are disciplined and controlled by a multi layered system of “ecclesiastical justice.” It includes publicly confessing sins and crimes to a group of peers, being ordered to jump into a pool fully clothed, facing embarrassing “security checks” or, worse, being isolated as a “suppressive person.”

At the pinnacle of the hierarchy, Miscavigecommands such power that managers follow his orders, however bizarre, with lemming-like obedience.

• Church staffers covered up how they botched the care of Lisa McPherson, a Scientologist who died after they held her 17 days in isolation at Clearwater’s Fort Harrison Hotel.

Rathbun, who Miscavigeput in charge of dealing with the fallout from the case, admits that he ordered the destruction of incriminating evidence. He and others also reveal that Miscavige made an embarrassing miscalculation on McPherson’s Scientology counseling.

• With Miscavige calling the shots and Rathbun among those at his side, the church muscled the IRS into granting Scientology tax-exempt status. Offering fresh perspective on one of the church’s crowning moments, Rathbun details an extraordinary campaign of public pressure backed by thousands of lawsuits.

• To prop up revenues, Miscavige has turned to long-time parishioners, urging them to buy material that the church markets as must-have, improved sacred scripture.

For a more detailed look into each defector, click here. They also told how they left the cult and just how difficult it was.

Cult lawyers (Monique Yingling) and cult Spokesperson Tommy Davis are of course crying character assassination of cult leader David Miscavige:

That’s what the defectors are doing to Miscavige, according to a team of two church lawyers and two spokesmen.

Rathbun, Rinder, De Vocht and Scobee: All of them failed at their jobs, broke Sea Org rules and were ethically suspect, the team said. Stack these four failures against a man of Miscavige’s stature and it’s clear who is credible and who is not.

“It’s not a question of they have a version and we have a version. It’s that this never happened,” said Monique Yingling, a non-Scientologist lawyer who has represented the church for more than 20 years. “There is a story here, and it’s not what you’ve been told.”

Here is an audio recording from one of MANY posted on YouTube, where you can hear cult spokesperson Tommy Davis completely losing it while talking about defector Marty Rathbun, and shows his psychotic side defending David Miscavige when interviewed by Joe Childs from the SP Times, at one point, even demanding Joe to look at him.

Cult Spokesperson Tommy Davis Son of Actress Anne Archer

Cult Spokesperson Tommy Davis Son of Actress Anne Archer

I am incredulous that anyone would consider Tommy Davis’ claims reliable when defending cult leader David Miscavige, considering Davis wasn’t present for any of the occurrences in which the four defectors witnessed. Clearly Davis can only be going by what he was told by Miscavige and Miscavige, like his mentor L. Ron Hubbard, was a well-known prevaricating charlatan. Even more perplexing, is Davis does admit there were beatings, and that there are several witnesses who can verify what he is saying, but none of course, implicating Miscavige. Rathbun already admitted he beat people under the orders of Miscavige, so my question is, if all these beatings were going on over the years, which according to Davis were up to 50 times, why did this go unreported? Is this acceptable behavior of this “church”, or any church for that matter?

And another telling part of the audio tape, is Davis lists other critic’s names and he states that they all are claiming the same story. This shows that ALL critics witnessed the same occurrences of abuse, corruption, mind control and this makes their stories even more credible from my perspective. How can so many individuals who are willing to speak out, all claiming the SAME story, who have witnessed the same behavior on several different occasions, be not credible? Mind boggling.

And what of the Lisa McPherson case?

Rathbun spoke about the case at length with the SP Times, and one quote in particular thoroughly sums up the way Lisa McPherson was handled:

“It was a “perfect storm of incompetence and irresponsibility” within the church, he said. “You couldn’t justify it.’’

The case was filed by Lisa’s family against the cult of Scientology and ended in a settlement out of court. Critics and ex members started the now defunct Lisa McPherson Trust in her name to try to help families who suffered from family disconnection from the cult. The group Anonymous has been fighting in Lisa’s honor a little over a year. This case is once again rearing its ugly head in a very big way, and of all the things the Church of Scientology has done under the leadership of Miscavige, the Lisa McPherson case is easily one of the most damaging and illegal.

Now with these four high-level ex-Scientologist defectors coming forward, new light on this deeply shrouded and mysterious death. There are now claims that David Miscavige was not only instrumental in the mistreatment which lead to the death of Lisa McPherson, it also shows a major cover up took place as well as an well-orchestrated series of irresponsible and criminally negligent behaviors by other the cult members which led to the death of a young, vibrant woman.

Part Two St. Petersburg Times Death In Slow Motion

Part Two Lisa McPherson Death In Slow Motion

The late Lisa McPherson was a Scientologist who died after being held for 17 days at the Fort Harrison Hotel by Scientology staffers. McPherson was transported to the Ft. Harrison after a minor car accident during which her behavior was deemed erratic. Scientology “minders” convinced hospital staff that they be responsible for her care, so she was released to their custody. Lisa being considered a Scientology “clear” worried her Scientology minders, as she had no control over her behavior, which is in direct contrast to those who’ve achieved the state of “clear.” Truth be told, we’ve read testimony from former members who had spent time with her prior to the accident, which revealed Lisa was at the beginning of what could only be described as a “nervous breakdown” with hints of psychotic behavior. Lisa needed qualified medical care and mental assessment by professionals, what she got was something entirely different and altogether heinous.

For 17 days she was without proper medical care, held against her will, force fed concoctions of prescriptions and was subjected to Scientology’s introspection rundown created by founder L. Ron Hubbard, who as everyone knows was NOT a doctor. At the very end of Lisa’s life, when the Scientology minders who were looking after her became fearful of her obvious mental deterioration and physical condition, only then did they take her to a hospital. Bizarrely, they drove 45 minutes away, passing FOUR hospitals on the way and it was during this final trip Lisa passed away. Upon arrival, the cockroach bitten, severely dehydrated, and whithered young woman was pronounced DOA. It was revealed the minders drove 45 minutes, past 4 hospitals with a critcally ill woman, because there wasn’t a Scientology doctor on staff. Lisa died with only ELEVEN DOLLARS left in her bank account after spending $176,700 on Scientology services.

A gruesome picture of Lisa below after her death.

So what did the mysterious and seldom seen cult leader David Miscavige have to say when this most recent series first broke on the SP Times featuring his picture on the front cover? Nothing!  He was TOO busy!

ecc

The SP Times gave Miscavige MORE than enough time to defend his side of the story, with the writers requesting an interview with the reclusive leader as far back on May 13th. They continued to press for an interview, either in person or by phone, for another consecutive five weeks in a row, with church spokespeople claiming Miscavige simply could not clear up his schedule until July. Something tells me that Miscavige should have made the exception. Instead, he fired off an email to the SP Times before the second front cover hit new stands with Lisa McPherson’s picture. Needless to say Miscavige was not pleased with the content of the series.

Here’s the basic gist of Miscavige’s correspondence according to the SP Times:

At 5:50 p.m. Saturday, Miscavige e-mailed the Times to protest the newspaper’s decision to publish instead of waiting until he was available. His letter said he would produce information “annihilating the credibility” of the defectors. Beloved by millions of Scientologists, church spokesmen say, Miscavige has guided the church through a quarter-century of growth.

The defectors are liars, they say, bitter apostates who have dug up tired allegations from the Internet and inflated the importance of the positions they held in Scientology’s dedicated work force known as the Sea Org. They say it was the defectors who physically abused staff members, and when Miscavige found out, he put a stop to it and demoted them.

Now they say the defectors are trying to stage a coup, inventing allegations so they can topple Miscavige and seize control of the church.”

You can read Miscavige’s email in its entirety in response to the SP Times staff here. I wonder if Miscavige’s interview is still an option in July…guess we will have to wait and see.

How are the cult spokespeople responding in general? Of course they say ALL four defectors are lying. No surprise there. Their entire response can be found here. There have been reports that the cult went as far as to sending out their minions to try to buy up all the newspapers they could from several convenience and grocery stores, hoping that Scientology’s public members and staff members wouldn’t see the SP Times coverage. But due to the almighty Internet, their efforts have been thwarted, as videos keep popping up on YouTube, as well as the actual audio of  Tommy Davis and major newspapers such as the Washington Post, The LA Times Chicago Sun Times, The Village Voice, The Associated Press, FOX news, CNN, MSNBC, have picked up the story and it has also gone global.

With Scientology recently in court now in France, the ever mounting court cases filed that are also headed to court, and this latest revelation from the SP Times, it is safe too assume that it’s a tough time being a Scientologist right now.

For the three part stories in their entirety:
The Truth Rundown Part One. Death In Slow Motion Part Two. Ecclesiastical Justice Part Three.

So what about Scientology’s other enablers: the celebrities? One has to wonder what is going through the minds of the top Scientology celebutards who have donated MILLIONS to the cult, only to read in the newspaper that their leader is an abusive psycho who beats members, was heavily involved in the Lisa McPherson’s death and subsequent cover-up and is being accused of running one of the biggest scams in the history of cults? Of course, if they are severely brainwashed as say Nancy Cartwright, who donated TEN MILLION DOLLARS to the cult, then they are conditioned to not believe anything negative about their “religion.”

And what of David Miscavige’s BFF Tom Cruise? How about John Travolta? Kirstie Alley? Hopefully they have a few critical thinking brain cells left and will be willing to take a good, hard look at the organization they’ve supported both financially and publicly for decades. We assume Cruise and other celebrities have been kept in the dark about Scientology’s crimes and abuses and are simply unaware of the deep, dark secrets which have been kept under lock and key for far too long. Far worse would be if we were to discover they willingly supported this violent and evil facade, while knowing the horrors that went on beneath them within the rank and file members. Let’s hope that’s not the case.

Tom Cruise and BFF David Miscavige Embrace

Tom Cruise and BFF David Miscavige Embrace

This series of articles by the SP Times isn’t being covered by rags, but in major news publications. Of course when the Time  magazine published Scientology The Thriving Cult of Greed back in 1991, the cult still recovered. But that was before the popularity of  the Internet, and before the almighty group of protesters called Anonymous, who have helped shed more light on the cult in a little over one year’s time, than many dedicated critics have been able to accomplish in over 30 years.

These new details that have emerged, is more than enough evidence for our government and other governments to start a serious investigation into this cult which uses religious cloaking for tax exemption and their ability to ruthlessly run a crime ridden abusive organization.

Mike Rinder, Marty Rathbun, Tom DeVocht and Amy Scobee are all brave for finally stepping forward. But we can’t forget they were complicit in helping the cult of Scientology thrive and prosper when they were in AND even after they left by keeping silent for so long. Granted they were brainwashed into believing they were helping to “clear the planet ” for all of mankind, but they all witnessed these atrocities and kept silent for too long. Cult member or not, wrong is wrong, illegal is illegal, they like anyone who witnesses something of this nature, have a responsibility to do the right thing. This should give the public a good indication into just how afraid ex members are of the cult and how this cult proves to be so litigious and ruthless.

Marty Rathbun in particular has openly admitted to beating several people himself under the orders of David Miscavige and destroying evidence in the Lisa McPherson case, as well as, lying to the Clearwater police, all in an effort to protect the insidious cult.

Their stories kept in silent limbo over the years, has caused numerous members to be continually abused on a daily basis within their Sea Org. It has allowed more time for more people to become brainwashed and Scientology has made billions and billions of dollars during their years of silence. Their silence has given Scientology more time to buy up more real estate and rub elbows with people of influence. It provided more time for members to be exposed to asbestos while sailing aboard the asbestos laden Freewinds and more time for Scientology to disseminate into our schools, politics, police forces, and even our justice system world wide with their many front groups. Let’s not forget the countless mysterious deaths and suicides which have piled up over the years, the financial ruin of many members, the family disconnection, the children who grew up in the Sea Org and never had the chance to be a child, the rapes, coerced abortions and abuse and all those who did not receive proper medical care and passed on way before their time. Rathbun made Lisa McPherson’s family suffer even more by destroying evidence that could have helped their case and possibly have put Miscavige behind bars, where he belongs.

Who knows how many lives these four people could have saved from a life of misery and even death had they spoken up years ago? Time and lives may have been lost, but we are ever so thankful the word is now finally out. Now it’s time for the US and other governments to finally LISTEN to what ex cult members, broken families and Anonymous protesters have been saying all along. That the cult of Scientology is nothing more than an undeserved tax exempted organization riddled with crime and abuses hiding under a religious cloak with its sole agenda being to make money.

A final thought we have is what will become of all of Scientology’s cult members on staff and in the Sea Org, should Scientology crumble? Certainly their own “church” that has lied to them for so many years, won’t be lending these poor victims a helping hand. Many members have no money, no job, no where to live, many have lost track of their family members due to Scientology’s family disconnection policy and many fear the outside world and have little to no education. These folks concern us.

Another possible concern among readers and critics is the fear of another Waco type disaster unfolding at Scientology’s Golden Era productions due, to its isolated location in the middle of the desert in Gilman Springs, which houses ruthless security guards who adhere to gulag-type mentality. Let’s hope responsible federal authorities keep a close eye on this compound, as local police force have proven to be unreliable with an air of corruption favoring Scientology.

Many ex members have suggested for people to blow (leave) and not to “route out” via Scientology terms. To route out means you leave the Scientology way, which forces you to sign documents claiming you will not speak out against the church. This procedure takes a VERY long time, and they will try to pull you back in, among other unpleasantness and you will also receive a nice little bill in the mail after you leave, which is called free loader debt. You will be charged for all the past courses and auditing you received. So it best just to BLOW!
We wish all members a safe exit.

Many exiting members have received help from ex member Chuck Beatty. Please call 1-866-XSEAORG for help leaving or for someone to talk to.

I really hope this is going to damage the cult.

  15. GREAT post!!! I’m very very worried about those who have spoken out about the church after all these years of covering for Scientology. I pray that they remain safe and if some weird coincidental death happens to one of those four, well we know who to blame.

  17. When compassion is non existent in a religion or politics then these can be seen as evil.
Scientology lacks any compassion being more like an outdated concept of macho man who liked always ruling the roost in oppressive style.
Scientology demands loyalty, duty, service & obedience by its converts to itself treating them all like conscripts who are forced to need Scientology but give no such loyalty etc in return.
Scientology divides people apart from one another.
Hubbard was a pathological liar with regard to his background suffering grand illusions & paranoiac concerns.
Hubbard was a genius with regard to simple truths but was not qualified to hold any position of power & has left such type influence to little tyrants like Miscavige.

  21. Glosslip is showing considerable bravery by being so blunt about the church’s abuses. Good for her.

Still, this is not the end of scientology by a long shot. The church will probably be around for decades, and here’s why.

    1. They have billions of dollars in resources, so unless every member quit and sued for all their money back, the church won’t fold.

    2. Even if sued, the church has played a shell game of front groups and separate corporate entities, so the money is going to be hard to find.

    3. People have devoted their lives to this bizarre belief system, and they’re not going to let it fall apart just because of some violence and a few felonies. No matter what is revealed about the church, there will be those who say you shouldn’t “throw out the baby with the bathwater.” Even without the church’s abuses, it will take a long time for everyone to realize:

    there is no baby.

  23. If there is any shady reprisal against these four ex-members, Scientology will have its doors shuttered worldwide in weeks.

There will be no more freakazoid Scientology justice like RPF pole running, musical chairs for high ranking members, or tormenting critics. This report is a watershed, as it is a big opportunity for other people to come forward with their stories and law suits as well.

Scientology never operated as “the most ethical people on the planet” and this is a glimpse of how truly unethically they operate…money-sucking, stat obsessed, frat boys at the top. A ludicrously inappropriate official spokesperson, Tommy D, who followed Rinder who lied, but has finally come clean.

It is perfectly cult-nutty, than in such a situation, their present spokesman Tommy Davis couldn’t have given a dignified response. Instead, he appeared like some whacked-out nutcase who in other circumstances, may have been a candidate for restraint and one of their “introspection rundowns.”

Tommy tried this hard-talking BS, complete with dinga-Yingling the paid shill, labeling overboarding as “ecclesiastical” ceremony, for comic relief. It is plainly over-the-top high-jinks and in many cases, cruelty and abuse.

As you mentioned, even if Rathbun did more slapping than Miscavige, that he did so much of it, and during part of that time was revered and rewarded for it as the midget’s right-hand man, enough to take it upon himself to destroy evidence in the McPherson case. Something was terribly wrong in the higher up culture of Scientology that allowed and encouraged this.

We all know what the lower level culture is about…more money, and helping others to make more money, for Scientology, by lying, cheating, threatening critics, or merely closing ones eyes to the abuses and all that was going into the acquisition of ever more square footage, which they can’t shut up about, even in this situation. As if real estate justifies everything. How pathetic.

Scientology’s first response was ridiculous too…that these people are conspiring to overthrow the present leadership, and come back and lead the cult. Like Rathbun is the perfect religious leader, after he’s admitted to destroying evidence in a major criminal case, and slapping a lot of people around himself.

The only thing that was missing was calling in Tom Cruise to make a fool of himself. He could wear his freedom medal of valor. I wish they’d done that.

What story did Cruise hear about Rathbun or Rinder, at the time they left? Inquiring minds want to know.

What did Kirstie know about this? Or was she too busy slathering things in butter. Does the Hollywood set get together and slap each other around?

  25. Eric, that is all true to an extent, but Gold Base and the Flag facilities (both worth a billion or so) can be attached and levied in a class action (perhaps the Freewinds) and destroying those leaves the Co$
with little but a few celeb centers.

  27. Great post! You raise an interesting point re Tom Cruise, Travolta, et al… they’re pretty much damned if they knew about the horrors of their religious leaders, or they’re damned if they were too stupid to figure out what was going on around them.

    Not good either way.

They knew. Of course, they knew.

    Comment by Delilah — June 25, 2009 @ 7:19 pm

  29. What is Tom Cruise to say?

“Not even in our mutual butt kissy games, has Mr. Miscavige ever slapped me. He is one sweet man and one helluva pretend Marine.”

“So, Lisa McPherson died, and Marty Rathbun destroyed evidence, so what, its like pfft, wild and woolly, it’s a blast!”

“So what if he slaps people around, they probably deserve it…Scientology is about SURVIVAL man, not love.”
    ——————–
More than likely, they’ll pretend they don’t know anything, and don’t want to know anything, just as Scientologists were never interested in what was done to Paulette Cooper.

Scientology will continue to ensnare dupes, who in a vulnerable moment of depression, will see one of their slick commercials and think it is worth a try.

Scientology is all about me, me, me. These people are so self-absorbed and brainwashed, that they hardly blink when they are separated from spouses and children. What kind of cult does that to people?

If seemingly really nice, bright person like Amy Scobee could sit there and listen to or see several of these incidents, and yet stay on, what is it going to mean to members who don’t even see it.

It is going to mean something to members who have some negative experiences with it though, if they hear about it. They’ll think back to being a little annoyed about being forced to buy that new set of books, or repeat some step.

I always think that the same curiosity that brought people into Scientology, to explore “knowledge” of a kooky cult started by a sci fi writer, will at some point lead them to being curious about the truth, especially the truth about Hubbard’s REAL life. Maybe I’m too optimistic.

But the truth, or something quite close, is on the internet, in the collected stories of ex-members.

  31. with the amount of hell being raised, the IRS could now revoke Scientology’s tax status on the grounds of France finding them gulity. And if they try to bully the IRS again, they will lose for two very good reasons
    1. They can’t silence the internet, they attempted to do so twice and both times it cost them a lot
    2. Anonymous will work with the goverment, namely turning over files, and the like that COS wants to hide.
Scientology is dying because less people are joining and with the lawsuits, more people are blowing out.

  37. Seems like I am the first Scientologist to comment here (not working for the Church, but that’s my religion). Sure, I will be battered, but thought I would put in my 10 cents worth…

Just observe the people who will post after me saying how everything I say is wrong, brainwashed, etc. and realize that I am a REAL person whose chosen religion IS Scientology, you don’t know me and don’t have the faintest idea who I am and what I do, I haven’t done anything bad to you or anyone else. My only “crime” is being a Scientologist, and that’s the reason you WILL think I am a bad person and everything I say is wrong, because I am a Scientologist. Who is brainwashed then?

    That is called prejudice.

I benefited tremendously from Scientology and even if you tell me it isn’t so, I personally experienced it is, so it IS true, for me at least. No, don’t bother saying I am a church staff member trying to defend the Church because I am not. I am a simple person who Scientology has helped.

Millions of people were killed in the name of Christianity, still nobody keeps bringing up the deaths of those millions of people their churches are responsible for. They go to their church every Sunday, and noone is picketing in front of their church with signs telling them they are f…ing killers because the Crusades killed millions of people and the … church should be banned. They keep bringing up the ONE where the Church of Scientology may be responsible for ONE person’s death. I feel for her as a person, but wishing for the religion to disappear on that basis just shows how blindly violent and abusive Scientology’s critics can be.

So personally, Scientology is important for me. Even if the church has made mistakes, even if they are not perfect people, even if they have done things that I may personally disagree with, imagine being in my shoes: people all over the place who know nothing about Scientology other than what they read in the press, saying so bad things about it that I am way beyond being offended.

You guys read something in the press, which IS also manipulated information, one side of the story, and you feel you instantly know all about it. Guess what – you don’t know anything about it, other than ONE side of the story. Paid for too – these anti-Scientology articles, as it have been proven time and again, are written to order. The 1991 Times article has been written by a “journalist” paid by Eli Lilly to write it. Proven fact.

The whole purpose of the article is to discredit Scientology, like nothing you have seen. Ever thought about why the SP Times didn’t run such a huge, 3-part series about Merryll Linch? 3.8 billion dollars in bonuses after the bank lost 25 billion than year? HUGE crimes there, the GLOBAL economy, including yourself are suffering the effects of what these criminals have done to the economy, so where are the heros of SP Times to do some “investigative reporting” on people stealing more money from your bank account than Scientology could ever hope to make?

Where is the huge 3-part SP Times report about the MANY, not just one Christian ministers who were busy making out with small boys? Where is the demand to ban THEIR religion?

Where is the 10-page investigative reports about Muslims who kill dozens of people DAILY in the name of their religion and the demands to ban their religion?

Do you see the picture? Why is Scientology always getting the special treatment?

    There is an answer.

Christians don’t say Prozac is bad for you.
Muslims don’t try to turn people away from Ritalin.

So they get away with ANYTHING, without being attacked. It takes a lot of work and a lot of money to attack a religion with such force. Other religions, while they could be, are not being attacked, because they don’t cause financial damage to the pharmaceutical industry with their teachings.

The trillion-dollar pharmaceutical industry only has ONE enemy: Scientology.

There IS an industry spending 160 million dollars a year lobbying for more relaxed regulations and creating a more profitable environment for the sale of more mind altering drugs. They sponsor (on many different channels, while staying invisible in the background) the anti-Scientology campaigns.

How come the press says Scientology should be punished in every way possible for some alleged crimes, while the anonymous member who just got sentenced to a year and a half in prison for PROVEN illegal acts (hacking the Church’s computer systems, a federal crime) gets NO press attacks whatsoever? The only tiny article about it is short, just mentions the facts, in a ho-hum manner. Yeah, he is a criminal, he goes to jail, but never mind, uhm, these anonymous guys are still heros, yeah, they commit crimes daily, but since these are against Scientology, their crimes don’t matter. Go anonymous! Scientologist killed an ant! Bang! Headlines! Is that SICK or what? You get entirely different treatment based on which side you are on. THAT is real brainwashing ladies and gentleman, and it is being done in front of your eyes, by the press itself.

It is a result of a well-funded. professionally orchestrated discrediting campaign on Scientology.

I am not saying there is no dirt in Scientology. I am just saying there are some people who are very, very busy digging it all up, down to the last minor detail they can get.

People only get THAT busy for very good money. There is so much dirt in the world, literally ANYBODY could be brought to their knees if someone zeroed in on the and got busy finding and exposing dirt about them, but Scientology gets slapped the hardest of any group or organization. Isn’t that interesting?

Scientology is in the crosshairs of some very powerful organizations, and that’s why out of all organizations that could be attacked, it is getting attacked disproportionally to its share of “dirt”.

If you don’t see that, then I don’t have to tell you who is brainwashed.

  39. My Dear Robert,Queen here.
Thank you for posting. I am afraid your post only further proves just how brainwashed Scientology’s members can be, and that they will believe ANYTHING the cult tells them. It also proves how far you are out of touch with reality.
For you to think that all critics are paid is beyond laughable. WHERE’S MY PAYCHECK?
I am sure the writers of the SP Times do get a paycheck from their PAPER, but not from Big Pharma as you so laughingly have been led to believe.
And speaking of digging things up… why does Scientology have a department JUST for digging stuff up and hiring private PI’s?
A little group called OSA? You know…. the Office of Special Affairs? Which is funded entirely by COS members through the CCHR.
Talking about a pot calling the kettle black Robert!

The person who gets braiwashed, doesn’t know they are brainwashed, or else it wouldn’t work. The money would stop coming in. So how can you truly say you are not brainwashed? you wouldn’t know until you snapped out of it.
And please don’t come back with, then how do I know I am not brianwashed.
Simple….. I didn’t PAY someone to brainwash me.
I didn’t take any courses, I did not have TR drills, I have never been on an e-meter, and I don’t blindy follow a dead Sci Fi writer whose life was a total and utter sham. THIS HAS BEEN PROVEN LOOK IT UP.
    If you are allowed to?
Then again, why would you want to? That would mean a failed audit session, and then it will go in your file and you will have to pay for MORE auditing until you make it right. Right Robert? You wouldn’t want to be a PTS would you? That would cost you a butt load of money to get out of.
It’s easier not to look at the critical side, so it won’t cost you more money.
What the HELL kind of “church” keeps personal files and then will blackmail you if you speak out?
What happened to your freedom of speech Robert? Freedom of thought?
Easy answer… you paid Scientology to take those things from you.
I hope some day you are able to leave the cult and get your life back. It’s a big beautiful world out here Robert. Jump in the water’s fine!

  41. Hi Robert.

There’s a problem with your little explanation. Your premise is simply wrong.

Scientology is not the target of some massive conspiracy. Nobody is being paid by the drug companies, psychiatrists, psychologists, AMA, or any other industry or professional association.

Just because you’ve been told this and you want to believe it doesn’t make it true.

Sure, there are plenty of other things in this world to target, much more sinister and abusive than the leadership of Scientology. So why is scientology being “singled out”? Simple:

    1) They have drawn a lot of attention to themselves over the years pursuing their critics with heavy-handed litigation.

    2) They drew even more attention by attempting to quash criticism on the Internet, suppressing “free speech”, etc. Enter Anonymous.

    3) Scientology is a relatively easy target. They are small enough (in the grand scheme of things) that a group of loose-knit protestors, critics, and ex-members feel like they have an actual chance at taking them down. People are more motivated to fight if they think they actually stand a chance of winning.

    4) Lulz. Many people find that taking on scientology can be fun and rewarding.

If you don’t think that is enough to motivate people (without being bankrolled by Pfizer), then you definitely need to get out more.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kefauver_Harris_Amendment
“The U.S. Kefauver Harris Amendment or “Drug Efficacy Amendment” is a 1962 amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

It introduced a requirement for drug manufacturers to provide proof of the effectiveness and safety of their drugs before approval [1] [2] , required drug advertising to disclose accurate information about side effects, and stopped cheap generic drugs being marketed as expensive drugs under new trade names as new “breakthrough” medications.”

It’s interesting that they trotted out a gaggle of ex-wives and numerous staffers to say these former executives are evil liars, as well as some others like Mark Headley, Jeff Hawkins and John Duignan who spoke out about the abuses earlier. “Why, David Miscavige wouldn’t hurt a fly.” Sure. Except most of these people saw what he did and know they’re lying.

Sorry Robert. If that were true none of the historical revolution, i.e. French Revolution, American Revolution to name two, would never have happened. It is called standing up for justice. Look at the current situation in Iran right now. People are f’ing dying for their right to a fair election. As much as you may think or are being told that people would not do this without being paid you have completly buried your head in the sand to the criminality of your church’s upper echelons and for that you are complicit in all the abuses your fellow church members were and continue to be subjected to. The bulk of the information coming out comes from your own church members. Those that left because they could no longer stand the abuses and those still in leaking information. The other critics those old and new were pulled in by actions taken by your church ( oh hai OSA) to try and suppress their free speech. And to top it off your church tried to herd a bunch of cats on the internets better known as anonymous. Robert two wrongs don’t make a right. Talking about the historical wrong doings of other religions does not make those perpetuated by Scientology right or acceptable. Marthy Rathburn left becauae of the abuses. He still believes in the tech and offers auditing for whatever people feel it was worth. Watch his videos. Mike Rinder was happy staying silent until your wonderful OSA threatened him to remain silent so they pulled him in. How can you consistently deny your own people who are demanding justice for the abuses they endured. How many times have I heard a scientologist say you can judge unless you actually try it, read the books, etc. Well the ex-scientologist who did try it, many who stayed for 20, 30 + years are telling their stories. The only difference now is that there are too many to silence and with each new one that comes forward the light of truth shines brighter.
    If you want people to respect your religion Robert it is very simple. Stand up and repeat after me;
“I am a scientologist and I will not tolerate abuses within my church or allow people in position of power to hide behind my religion to perpetuate crimes against its members or members of the public. These actions taint the fundamental beliefs and scriptures of my religion and this criminal behavior is not acceptable. My religion believes in the fundamentals of human rights and I as a member will do my duty to report and ensure that no member of my church does anything against those fundamental principals. So help me Xenu.”

  55. To the scientologist, Robert,

It is not a crime to be a scientologist.

We are not protesting the beliefs of scientology, we are protesting the abuses. There are many strange beliefs in scientology like there are in many religions, philosophies and cults. If you are happy to pay many thousands of dollars to find out about these beliefs (which are free on the internet) then that is your choice as long as you are not coerced or decieved into paying up.

Why the victim mentality Robert? Nobody here hates you or wishes you any harm. I just hope you open your eyes to the abuses and ask you to use your common sense. Not everything your church tells you is true. If you do believe everything you are told then I am afraid to say you are unfortuneatly brainwashed. scientology will tell you its PTS or you’re “out-ethics”. Doubt, they say, is low on the tone scale. But think about it for a second. Isn’t scientology supposed to be about freedom? You should be free to doubt. LRH wrote some pretty good things in my opinion but he also wrote some bad stuff. David Miscavige changed the Tech. It’s a fact. I can show you the alterations. Why pay good money for bad Tech?

LRH wrote that bad things are pulled in through a connection to a PTS. David Miscavige is the PTS. He’s pulling it all in.

There are many people practising the true, original Tech in the Freezone. They don’t charge tens of thousands of dollars. They are free to come and go.

You can be happy outside of the church. Not everything in the world is about psych drugs and SP’s. You can live a great life like the thousands of others practising scientology outside of the church.

You are not under attack Robert. The people in your church committing these abuses are under attack. True scientologists claim to be the most ethical people on the planet and I believe some of them are. If you are one of those people then it is your duty according to LRH and the original Tech to disconnect from people committing these abuses.

You are in a tough spot. Please think about it. I hope you make the right decision.

  57. SP Times covers Scientology because it is in their area of coverage. When you have a half of downtown Clearwater taken over by zombies, who keep talking about their square footage spreading over the world, people are interested, it is real news, and it sells papers. Same with former members, who went through abusive situations, in the cult that claims they are the most ethical people on the planet.

Plus, it is fascinating at this stage, this group of loons, scapegoating Xenu, psychiatry and the pharmaceuticals industry, for all the ills in the world. Remember, critics aren’t scapegoating Scientology for all the evils in the world, just all the evils in Scientology.

Robert doesn’t understand that Scientologists are not going to change the minds of people who think, the critics.

Scientology is predicated on finding vulnerable, open people, who are willing to try anything. This is only one in fifty, or maybe one in a hundred people. Anyone who KNOWS something about Scientology, who isn’t a member, pretty much avoids it like the plague.

So Robert, get out on the street, and start hawking that piece of crap, Dianetics, or getting dupes on the e-meter. It is the only way to Keep Scientology Working.

What is this insanity about reading anything in the press as one being sided, while claiming the official website is the only place to go for what, both sides? Ha ha. It makes no sense, like DC8’s to volcanoes. You need a vacation if you believe this stuff. I hear the Van Allen Belt is warm this time of year. L. Ron said so.

Man, if I consider joining a fake “religion” full of kooks and loons, like Tom Cruise, I want to read both sides of the story. If you can’t grasp the concept of BOTH SIDES, then indeed you need to word clear “brainwashed.” Ask Xenu, the ghost of L. Ron, or Slappy Miscavige to help you with that.

sorry it’s NOT a religion as stated in the early works of by L. Ron Hubbard himself.
Scientology is a BUSINESS hiding under a “religious” cloak for tax exemption.
No other “religion” charges the money Scientology does for enlightment.
Nor do other religions keep changing what is written in their books to make members by the same repackaged crap, so they can make more money.
No other religion has 100’s of front groups. No other religion advertises celebrities in their parish.

  69. Wow,

All religions are a business not deserving, in my opinion, of tax exemptions. According to the vatican in 2001 the catholic church was worth over 422 billion dollars.

Over time virtually all religions are forced to edit their holy texts and/or interpretations to keep-up with changing times.

Scientology may not be a religion in your view, but it certainly has all the hallmarks of religions.

  71. Dave, Queen here.
I dont think other religions should be tax exempt either. So we agree.
But Scientology worships nothing, and other religions do not repackage their stuff and resell it like COS. And if other religions do edit their text, they don’t force their members to buy it.
If COS members don’t buy the new stuff, it will probably cost them more in auditing sessions to make it right. So it’s probably cheaper for them to buy the repackaged crap. They are stuck,as far as I know. Or they will be told they WILL be stuck…. depending on wherever they are in their quest to go up the Bridge To Financial Ruin and clear the planet.

Scientology does NOT have all the hallmarks of a religion for many reasons.
Salvation is free Dave. No other “church” forces you to give money if you don’t want to. And for those who give 10% of their income to their church,
if they no longer want to do so, they can always leave.
You can’t leave Scientology without routing out or if you blow. And once out, you can’t speak against them or they will come after you. If you route out you will get free loader debt for past courses you took.

COS also keeps extensive files on their members about sex, and all their entire personal info and use it against them if they speak out. Which is exactly what they are doing now with the 4 execs that just came out.
Does this sound like a religion to you? LOL!

It’s not a few Scientologists behaving badly. Scientology as an organization is rotten at its very core, from Miscavige on down. Criminal behavior is not only tolerated in Scientology, it is encouraged and rewarded. (And was under Hubbard as well).

The choice you and other Scientologists have (those not part of the organization itself is who I am referring to here) is 1) to either sit back and let the criminal behavior continue, or 2)speak out, demand Miscavige and his cronies be removed.

If you choose #1 Scientology will cease to exist within a year or two. This is only going to get worse. A LOT worse.

  77. Dave, that property comes to about $8 per person (500 million catholics in the world). In the USA, the Catholic Church has to obey secular laws. The child molesting priests went to jail (and the Church cooperated in the investigation). Front groups have to pay sales taxes (what is left, if donated to the church, is then tax free). They cannot use fraud or black PR or coercion to (a) bring people into the church, or (b) punish those who leave it. Finally, they observe the priest-parishioner privilege even if you subsequently leave the church.
