Lady GaGa’s Bad Romance Video…Vodka, Sex Slaves And Product Placements Are Cool?

I happened to catch Lady GaGa’s new video Bad Romance
or shall I say Nemiroff’s Vodka new video?
I had to both laugh and cringe at the story behind her video and the rampant amount of product placement.
By the looks of this video, it seems like Nemiroff Vodka (which you can see about seven times in the video) is the winner of the “most shoved in your face award” hands down.

The video not not only shows the Lex Nemiroff bottles repeatedly, they show people drinking glasses of clear liquid which is supposed to insinuate drinking the vodka. They also show someone pouring it into a glass, and also forcing a glass of clear liquid down GaGa’s throat.

Nemiroff Vodka is not only being shoved down GaGa’s throat in the video, but GaGa chose to shove it down her fan’s throats.
Then there is the story behind the video, that can be very questionable to certain audiences. Doesn’t GaGa have an awful lot of young fans? Was booze, kidnapping and sex slaves the right direction to go with this video? We will get to that in a bit.
The product placement is EVERYWHERE in this video.
In the beginning of the video, once you get past the first picture of the Nemiroff Vodka bottle, there is a group shot of the “cast” in the video and right up front on either side of GaGa is a Parrot by Starck pair of black funnel tower speakers with an iPod or iPhone perched on top on the left speaker.
Then you can see GaGa’s mesh covered finger push the button on a Parrot by Starck iPod speaker. Parrot by Starck was designed by French product designer Philippe Starck (although the real product name is “Zimku”). It is a $1,600 sound system for an iPhone or iPod.
We then move on to GaGa wearing a pair of her very own silver Lady Gaga Heartbeats head phones in the bath tub scene. These will set you back $100.00 and of course, they’re available on her website.

Then THREE times you see GaGa wearing a pair of white “Safari” sunglasses by Carrera.

And last but not least, there is the HP Envy Beats Limited Edition laptop and headphones by Monster. There is a whole row of these laptops to show the “sex slave bidding” results in the video’s story. The laptop logo was very prevalent. A real bargain at $2,500.
Also making an appearance, was a Wii controller a couple of times which was used to bid on GaGa the sex slave by the bidding Russian mafia men. Wonder how Wii weighs in on what their controller was used for?
Now there are a few smaller product placements in the video, but they are not as visible. There are gold aluminum cans in the beginning of the video on the floor and some of the “actors” are holding them. Maybe someone knows what they are?
There are also plastic bottles of a red “drink” on the tables which are seen several times. It also shows one the “actors” drinking one of these bottles. Looks like Vitamin Water (acai blueberry) to me, but the name is not visible. I guess they didn’t pay enough moolah for their name to be visible in the video. Funny they showed people pouring vodka, made it look like people were drinking vodka, but put no emphasis on the Vitamin Water.
They showed SO much vodka in this video, I was kind of shocked. Even though you don’t actually see the word vodka on the bottle, I still think it was a big mistake. Gaga has a lot of young fans, what kind of message does this send? In one of her earlier videos,LoveGame, it shows people drinking Campari on the subway. Again, more booze placement.
I know many other artists do this too. Rappers show a lot of crap they shouldn’t be showing when it comes to excessive behavior and demeaning women, but this video wins the award for booze placement.
This new video is definitely Lady GaGa’s style in all her wackiness and her “edgy” shenanigans. One of the things I did like about this video, was the scene with the floating crystals around her, I thought that was pretty darn cool.
Now the premise behind the video according to Wikipedia:
“Gaga is kidnapped by a group of supermodels who drug her and then sell her off to the Russian mafia for sex slavery.”
The Russian mafia? OH! That’s where the Nemirfoff Vodka ties in — their bottles state it’s a product of the Ukraine.
Lovely story for young fans, isn’t it? Hello sexual degradation…your table it waiting!
Lady GaGa believes that the opening scene with her wearing a pair of razor blade glasses “portrays a tough female spirit.” I didn’t really pick that up from that scene.
I guess the “tough female spirit” is then squashed with the rest of the video’s story:
“Two women pull her out of a bathtub, rip her clothes off and force her to drink a glass of vodka. As the second verse begins, Gaga seductively dances for a group of men bidding on her. She straddles one of the men and performs somewhat of a lap dance on him.
Afterwards, he raises his bid and becomes the highest bidder for Gaga. When the chorus is played for the third time, Gaga is shown wearing a jacket made of a polar bear hide. She walks toward the man, who is sitting on a bed, unbuttoning his shirt. Gaga has a look of indifference on her face and removes her jacket and sunglasses.
Suddenly, the bed spontaneously combusted with the man still sitting on it. The video ends with Gaga laying beside a smoldering skeleton on top of the destroyed bed with ashes everywhere. She smokes a cigarette, while her pyrotechnic bra goes off”
The Russian Mafia Bidding Scene
Ok, I am not a fan of censorship, but again, she has MANY young fans. Between all the vodka drinking and sex-slave bidding…is this the message GaGa wanted to send? FYI.. Her website sells Lady GaGa back to school supplies.
There was a comment left on her website by a women who said her daughter loved the video so much that she watched it 100 times. Now I know it is up to the parent to police their kids, and I don’t know how old this girl was, but it’s close to impossible to watch your kids 24/7.
I also DID NOT LIKE the polar bear coat, (don’t care if it was fake or not, it is what it implies) nor the dead bat on her head, or the dead impala head mounts on the wall on either side of the bed at the end of the video. Very irresponsible dead animal placement which was certainly not necessary with all the other crap going on in this video.
And some of the lyrics?
The hook of the song is:
Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah!
Roma-Roma-ma-ah!
Ga-ga-ooh-la-la!
Want your bad romance
“GaGa-ooh-la-la”? I can’t stand when artists sing about themselves. Especially when they compliment themselves. Sorry, it’s too damn cheesy.
Some fans think that Bad Romance sounds too much like a faster remix of her other song Poker Face. (eessh, it su-su-sucks)
If you play the two songs back to back, they are very similar. Some fans think it’s her best song that she has done so far.
But you have to admit, for a five minute video that had so many products shown over and over, it came off more like a vodka commercial, rather than a video. She should of used her noggin and just done a Nemiroff Vodka music commercial for them and gear it towards older adults. Oh wait…that’s what she did.
But was the product placement in the video and it’ premise her record company’s idea or hers? Could she say no to product placement in her videos if she wanted to? Did Nemiroff Vodka fund the entire video? I really don’t know how the politics of record companies work. I do know they are quite ruthless, and some record companies have a lot of control over their clients.
BUT with a little research I found…the video was done by Francis Lawrence. He also did I Am Legend. FYI.. GaGa says she is a huge fan of Will Smith. Careful Gaga! I am sure Scientology would love to get you in their clutches!
Back to who was responsible for the video, Lady Gaga stated:
“I wanted somebody with a tremendous understanding of how to make a pop video, because my biggest challenge working with directors is that I am the director and I write the treatments and I get the fashion and I decide what it’s about and it’s very hard to find directors that will relinquish any sort of input from the artist.”
So….GaGa was responsible for the premise behind the video and agreed to the product placement too? That’s what it sounds like. If so, shame on GaGa for not considering her fan’s young impressionable minds.
Hey GaGa! Question…Do you think kidnapping women, forcing liquor down their throats, dancing for men, doing a lap dance and having men bid on women to be their sex slaves while showing a butt load of vodka in your video is showing the same “tough female spirit” as your razor blade glasses?
I couldn’t include all the pictures of all the products in her video, or the whole sex slave story pictures. So watch the video yourself and see how many products you can spy and let me know if this video’s story was a good idea for young eyes.
Now as you can guess, I am not a Lady GaGa fan.
This broad is doing THIRTY ONE gigs between 11/27-1/18 in the US, and then between 2/9-3/08 she is all over Europe with another eleven shows on her tour.
Her eight song album, sells for a reasonable price, (smart move GaGa) and it had four #1 radio hits. So it’s quite obvious that her fans are in love with her ”cover your face up with crap“ get ups and they find her pop songs ever so edgy and innovative.
Maybe if I didn’t witness Madonna’s fame rise up in the 80’s and other bands in the 90’s, I would think that Lady GaGa was edgy and innovative too. But I have seen it all before well before Gaga was born.
This video reminds me of Madonna’s voice (although not in her early years when her voice was really high) with a touch of Marylin Manson’s “Dope Show” video freakishness, and Grace Jones’ costumes all rolled up into one. Now I am not a Madonna, Marilyn Manson or Grace Jones fan either, but they did do it first. And I am not saying their videos were for young eyes either, and Madonna and several other artists (hello Britney) and rappers are FAR from being decent role models. But you would think that GaGa could have used a little more sense for this video, since many of her fans are so young.
Truth be told, like it or loathe it, Lady GaGa’s ”Bad Romance” song is a tough tune to get out of your head. (drat!)
When I watched the video several times and tried to count all the product placements, I had to turn the sound off. This song gets tired real fast. But I am sure it would be a lot of fun to dance to after a couple of martinis in a dance club. Hell ,after a couple of martinis, I will dance to just about anything.
But I can’t imagine having to sing this song for 42 shows. I would be SO tired of dressing up in all that crazy shit every night and singing this song over and over. A performer’s life can be far from glamorous.
GaGa has set herself up for a tiresome future. Her fans will always expect to see her looking outrageous, and wondering what wacky outfit she will be seen in next. Very exhausting way to go career wise, unless she can evolve gracefully.
I saw a couple of pics of her where she wasn’t dressed up at all and she was out and about in town. The first thing the gossip rags commented on, was how plain she looked, and people seemed a tad disappointed in that. Well I guess a true fan could care less what she’s wearing. Right? Still.. it has to be all very exhausting.
Speaking of exhausting…Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (GaGa’s real name) best be careful on her Fame Monster Tour. With a grueling schedule like hers, she can easily burn herself out right quick. Fans can are also be very fickle. What’s in this year may be gone the next. So invest wisely Gaga!
The picture below is a behind the scenes shot which was posted on her website. It’s a shot from the end of the video, minus the cigarette hanging out her mouth which is seen in the finished video. Again…. did she have to include a cigarette? Weren’t the exploding fembot tatas enough?

Hey! Was Amy Winehouse In The Video Too? *snicker*

I think it’s just good business that you can find a way for someone else to pay for your productions and in return all you have to do is show their products a few times. Probably saves a lot of people some money. However, I think you may have overstated your point in this article. You complain about Lady Gaga’s video repeatedly showing the vodka and other products, but in every single paragraph you repeated your point and said the same things just in slightly different words. A little hypocritical? Yes. And I have never heard of Lady Gaga being a big influence to a younger audience. I’m sure her target audience is more mature.
Comment by CherryDarling — November 12, 2009 @ 5:30 pm
CherryDarling, Queen here.
Thanks the for taking the time to comment.
BUT….
Hypocritical?
You STILL didn’t get the point,no matter how many times I repeated myself as you say.
In my article, I mentioned a comment posted on GaGa’s website that I saw. The person who commented said her daughter watched the video 100 times. Do you think her daughter is an older mature daughter? AND are older audiences that are “mature” the ones buying back to school supplies off GaGa’s website? Are they buying back to college supplies?
I don’t mind a little product placement here and there, but this was over the top.
The main product didn’t have to be alcohol either. Nor did the video have to be about sex slaves.
It is not “good business” to have someone else pay for the video if the product is not a positive influence.
And even if the other products are not negative influences, those products were associated with a video about men bidding on sex slaves. Sorry,I wouldn’t want my products associated with that.
I feel performers who have control over their videos should be responsible for the content.
And I am not a prude or tea totaler in any sense.
Even if her fans are not as young…. how is this a positive message AT ALL to young women (or men)… say in their twenties? Or anyone for that matter?
The video could have still been cool without the awful story line and vodka, plain and simple.

Product placement schmoduct placement….I just want to know who the hot guy is that gets her! You seem to have done a good deal of reseach on the video. Do you know???
Comment by Chyna — November 12, 2009 @ 10:48 pm
Sorry Chyna, didn’t go that far in depth.
You will have to play detective.
He didn’t look so hot at the end of the vid. lol!
Unless you count that he was on fire as hot.:)
Good luck in your search

I watched the video and couldn’t believe what I had just seen. Mind you, before this, I was not exposed to very much of Lady Gaga (even though I am a young 20-something, I’m not much into pop culture). I watched it again thinking that maybe there was some deeper symbolism or meaning that Lady Gaga was trying to get across. Maybe she was making some type of social commentary about our culture and sex. Nope. Nothing. I then went on to watch the rest of her videos and was saddened when I realized that she purely sells sex. I know this is just my opinion, but her music is really really not very good. Her music by itself is just ok. Her lyrics are as about as deep as a kiddy pool. As you mentioned, the music video started out really cool. I was really excited because it is hard to find really creative over the top music videos. Even the product placement didn’t bother me so much because I kind of expect that everywhere. True, it’s sad that vodka was plugged as much as it was. What I find truly disgusting about this video (and Lady Gaga herself) is the unabashed selling of sex. In every single one of her videos she is writhing around almost naked. We always get a full view of her ass and/or her spread eagle. She either sticks her finger in her mouth, kisses someone, or licks someone. There is a sexual scene (orgy or otherwise) in every single video.
She is perpetuating negative gender roles. Women are supposed to be thin, covered in makeup, and wearing sky high heels but barely any clothes. Women are only sex objects meant to fulfill a man’s sexual needs. She makes it seem ok to have lots of casual sex with multiple random people. It is really cheap and can’t believe people are buying into it. It’s naive for CherryDarling to say that she has a more mature target audeince. She is completely taking away any responsibility the artist has. Lady Gaga didn’t become a worldwide famous popstar because she only wanted to target a small group of people. And that would also mean her music videos wouldn’t be playing on MTV (where the target audience IS teenagers). but only in a perfect world would no person under the age of 16 or even 18 be allowed to watch this kind of garbage. Let me just make it clear that I am not into censorship or nor am I conservative. I am very liberal. Anyone who disagrees with me should really take a minute and think back to when they were in highschool and how impressionable they were at those ages. i GAURANTEE you there are thousand if not millions of young teenage girls who have watched her music videos over and over and idolize her. I just really hope that parents are responsible and take it upon themselves to teach their children that women have more to offer than just their bodies.
Comment by Jin — November 13, 2009 @ 2:03 am
I think its rather annoying that you give it such a biased look over. The video shows her fighting the kidnappers and she ended up burning up the bidder. Just b/c her videos show her being kidnapped, you automatically deem her weak or that her message about strong women is no longer of value? Are you trying to say that being kidnapped and sold makes a woman weak? Or are you trying to say that approaching the topic makes her a hypocrite? Yeah so you’ve seen it all so her mv isn’t good enough? It was very creative and beautiful to watch.
Furthermore, young kids aren’t her target audience, so its ridiculous to chide her for having adult themes in her videos. It’s the same thing as saying “gosh pornography isn’t meant for kids and parents can’t stop the exposure”.

As the below video discusses, this video is a satirical comment on the sex/slave trade! Though it is in a shiny package, it still points it out as something that is exploitive and that is why the bidder gets his comeuppance!

Hang on, forget the product placement..Gaga’s being auctioned as a sex slave and people are actually BIDDING? That’s a suspension of disbelief too far.
What are they bidding? Half a pint of orange squash and a bag of nuts? They 55p they’ve saved up getting back the deposits on bottles or the loose change they found down the back of the sofa?
They say supermodels are stupid and it must be so if they reckon selling Gaga would get them even 1/174th of the price of a MAC Lipgloss.
This woman is WAY overexposed and I can’t see her lasting any longer than this album. Also she’s becoming a bit of a joke with those outfits, they’ve gone from kooky to…’sort it out love, you look a state.’
Comment by Sally — November 13, 2009 @ 2:28 pm
Look Miss. GaGa is the fucking best I don’t care. I love her to death. If the parents don’t like the fact that there children are watching her videos maybe they should just take the computer & tv away from them. & plus it doesn’t matter because guess what people drink in the real world. Shit I drink & smoke & I’m only 15 & have been for 3 years now & I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Drinking is all over the place so deal with it. I love her fashio. I would love to go shopping in her closet. That all I really had to say so yea. Have a lovely day.

Comment by ZullyZombie — November 13, 2009 @ 3:32 pm
You forgot to tell Ms. Gaga to get off your lawn.
It is not up to artists to censor themselves for fear of little sheltered children seeing their art. It is up to the parent to shelter the children if thats how they would like them raised.
I raised mine free-range. They could watch anything. This video opens up so many good conversations to have with your tweens and teens. I doubt younger kids will be able to even spot the storyline. To them its just another girls dancing for boys video.
Thanks for reminding us you were not a prude. You must have felt you were coming off that way and you were, IMO. Personally, I think you /are/ a bit prudish.
@Chyna – That Russian guy is soo familiar. He is also soo hot. Maybe we have seen him in a Russian mob movie. I am thinking maybe one by Guy Ritchie. If I track down who he is Ill try to remember to come back here and report. You, too, ok?

Yeah, I noticed all of those as well ‘cept for the laptops – you actually missed one: the mafia are bidding with Wii Nunchuks :p Which makes no sense but whatever…
To me the gold-colored cans look like Diet Coke (http://www.enveloop.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/coca-cola-light-330-ml.jpg) but I’m not sure if the golden ones were released outside the Netherlands.

Why does everything have to be kiddie-fied? It’s an adult video for a mature audience. The kids have Miley Cyrus. The adults have Lady Gaga. She shouldn’t have to cover up or be g-rated for the kids.
Comment by Heath — November 15, 2009 @ 11:00 am
Well Heath, I guess it must be the “mature audience” that are buying the back to school supplies off GaGa’s website?
FYI I asked around, and your wrong, her audience has TONS of young fans.
Comment by Queen — November 15, 2009 @ 11:43 am
Look dude, in the grand scheme of things, this video isn’t the worst thing children are going to see nor will many of them completely understand the context. As for what Gaga “should of” done, it can hardly be said that anything Gaga EVER does is mild or kid-friendly. It is clear that she wants to sing about adult subjects and she has every right to! She’s not singing about rape, and in the end of this video she KILLS the mobster. If a child who views this video once understands what is happening, then he or she will also understand that the mobsters were the bad guys, that this video is a story. Everything about the video is fantastic, and by this I don’t mean great but completely fictional and fantasized, and I think she makes that very clear. Even a child will know that placing this video into a realistic context is nearly impossible. Videos are for imagery and entertainment, and good parents will discuss that with their children. Even without this video, there are thousands of other videos, games, TV shows, movies, etc that we could argue are bad for children to watch, and so talking about it with your children is the best way to handle it. Kids can’t be sheltered forever. One of the great things about Gaga is that it is easy to see that she is a performer through and through, and that she appreciates, well, fake things. Fake fur, eyelashes, hair, costumes, and STORIES. I think kids can pick up that this is not something that applies to real life, and if for some reason they do think so, they will understand the aspects of the video that are BAD (the mobsters, the drinking, etc). Because the vodka and violence is all associated with the villains of this video.
On another note, it will be very difficult for kids to see this video ANYWAY because MTV hardly shows music videos anymore! (sigh)
To end this comment- I could go completely through your entry or article or essay and tear it apart, but neither of us have time for that. I understand your concern for young audience members as well as your frowning upon product placement, but you have to take some things into account here. Good parents are going to have talks with their children, ESPECIALLY about Gaga (“Mommy, what’s a discostick?) and that’s just the way it is. Maybe in a way it’s a good thing, because children need to learn about the world, what’s good and bad, what’s fact and fiction, what’s performance, etc. Plus this video goes by so quickly that after one viewing a child may only understand parts of it. As for product placement, well, that’s kind of Gaga’s thing. She’s big on fashion, New York, the world, and I’m sure every product has importance to her, such as the vodka’s connection to the Ukraine. You could say it’s greedy of her to put her own products in the video, but it must be taken into consideration that she comes from a place where people spend a year’s salary on ONE article of clothing! Gaga is one of those women who lives for fashion, and almost all of her costumes are her own design (always with influence from her favorite artists one of which is GRACE JONES). This is one of the things Gaga’s fans love about her, and what Gaga does, she does for the fans. Everything about Gaga is a performance, is an art to her.
And one last thing…when she says “Gaga ooh lala”…she’s not singing about how great she is, she’s just saying her name like she does in all her songs. Tons of artists do it, just to start the song by establishing who is singing. Sometimes the producer or songwriter or record label are mentioned as well, which Gaga has also done in other songs (Red One, Konvict, Gaga). Rappers do it all the time, Beyonce does it, etc. It’s not just a prideful conceited thing, it’s about representation.
Okay, I’m done now. Bye!
Comment by emmaemma — November 15, 2009 @ 5:22 pm
Oh wait! One more thing, sorry. Her FIRST album was not eight songs, it was twelve, and it was off of THAT album that she’s had four hits. Bad Romance is off of a NEW album that’s eight songs, and it’s more of a separate sort of addition to her first album. Okay, done!
Comment by emmaemma — November 15, 2009 @ 5:25 pm
The fact that you find lady gaga’s actions degrading is rather hysterical to me in the fact that she wears mostly high fashion and crazy ass couture. Last time I checked fashion is art SHE DOESNT try to appeal to the masses, She has been on a million worst dressed lists and she still continues to do her thing. if you want to see down right sluty watch Britneys new video 3. It is art not vulgarity and stop worrying about the god damn children I don’t think that her target audience hence disco stick and many other fantastically witty lyrics
Maybe you should sit down and study the visual arts or a little history so you could understand when its being made, instead of being the dumb girl who critiqued something she didn’t understand.
P.S. Those vodka bottles are pretty awesome looking and at least She wasn’t promoting something that already sells like crazy in the states. i.e. Smirnoff, Grey Goose, Absolute
Comment by Seth — November 19, 2009 @ 7:38 pm
To make a separate post for a separate argument, I question you, which is better parenting: To confront your children about the things they learn from musicians, or to demand musicians censor their work to match your parenting ideals?
Comment by Der Luftmensch — November 27, 2009 @ 3:40 am
Der Luftmensch.. I would rather she didn’t use Vodka or a sex slave theme for such young viewers to see period. You can’t watch your kids 24/7. Most kids would never discuss this with their parents, especially if they shouldn’t have watched it in the first place. Some are just too damn young. It sends the wrong message. Women empowerment could have been a better and stronger message. And no I don’t think the burnt up guy at the end is an example of that, sorry.
I think the ending was more or less saying that Lady Gaga was so “hot” in bed, that she burnt the guy up. Rather than her killing off a Russian mafia sex slave top bidder. IMO
With all the things her video could have been about, it wasn’t the best choice. IMO, and I am entitled to that opinion.

While you are entitled to your opinion, it doesn’t mean that your opinion is not stupid. If your kids are old enough to watch Lady Gaga, they are old enough for YOU to discuss what you don’t like about the videos (doesn’t matter if THEY won’t bring it up – YOU are the parent). If they are not old enough to discuss this, then seeing this video will probably make little impression on them anyway.

Sorry for the multiple posts. Comment box won’t let me post my whole thing at once. More is to come, when it allows me to post again.
