Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Stars? All Of ‘Em, IMO

Forbes recently released the annual list of Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Movie Stars to show you, in these economically challenged times, just who delivers the least bang for their buck at the thee-ater.  They used a very scientific formula to arrive at their conclusion:

To compile our list, we looked at each star’s last three films that opened wide before Jan. 1 (in order to give each film time for a DVD release). We didn’t count animated movies, supporting roles or anyone consistently earning under $5 million per movie.

To calculate our payback figures, we took half of each film’s worldwide box office (to roughly approximate the studio’s cut of each ticket). Then we added the first three months of DVD revenues and subtracted the budget to derive the film’s gross income. After that, the actor’s total compensation (upfront pay plus any money earned from sharing in the film’s profits) was divided into the gross income to get the actor’s payback figure for the film. The payback for the last three movies for each actor was averaged to calculate ultimate payback. We deliberately used gross income rather than net income in our analysis because the latter figure is so easily manipulated by studio accountants, with marketing expenses treated differently for almost every film.

Okay, seriously, everything was Charlie Brown’s teacher after the first sentence or two, because I tune out anything math-y.  But let’s get to the list, shall we?  Because that I can get my head around:

  1. Nicole Kidman
  2. Jennifer Garner
  3. Tom Cruise
  4. Cameron Diaz
  5. Jennifer Lopez
  6. Jim Carrey
  7. Nicolas Cage
  8. Drew Barrymore
  9. Will Ferrell
  10. Cate Blanchett

Here’s a few examples of just what is going on…for example, Nicole Kidman.  Her movie The Golden Compass earned $370M worldwide.  Sounds good, right?  However, it only took in $3.36 for each dollar shelled out to her.  Her movie The Invasion actually lost $2.68 for each dollar paid to her.  Overall, her movies averaged about $1 of gross income for every dollar paid Nicole.

So let’s take a look at Tom Cruise, who was once at the top of the movie ladder but who is now slipping farther and farther down the rungs due to both bad movie choices, strange personal behavior, and involvement in the cult of Scientology.  Lions For Lambs (show of hands, anyone who saw it) took in $63M worldwide, earning it only $1.88 on its investment in the actor.  Overall, his movies average about $4 of gross income.

Here’s one for you…Nicolas Cage, while scoring $456M in box-office receipts for Book Of Secrets, only managed to rake in $73M for Next, which means the movie lost $.50 for every dollar he was paid.  Overall, Nic can gross about $4.16.

Anyway, you get the idea.  It seems that with their multimillion-dollar paydays, some movie stars just can’t cut it in the dollar department.  Nicole can commandeer $15M for a movie, and Cameron Diaz can ask $50M and not blink an eye.  Yet numbers don’t lie, and if you’re looking for a good return on  your money this bunch might not be your best bet.

But let’s face it…$50M for anything that isn’t a cure for diseases or going towards some sort of humanitarian effort is a waste of money, in my opinion.  These people aren’t curing cancer here…they’re acting in movies.  Yes, I realize that acting is an art, and some people can do it and some people can’t.  Yes, I realize movies, like all entertainment, have their place as a form of escapism to help us take a little vacation from our everyday life.  But when people like teachers and paramedics, who actually serve a very useful function in society, can’t even afford to put food on their tables…even doctors’ salaries can’t compare to the cheddar actors and actresses bring home.  In my opinion, they’re all embarrassingly overpaid.  Even my favorites.  I’m not saying they shouldn’t get paid more than the average cashier, but come on…they may be talented, but they’re just people.  They put on their overpriced imported trousers one leg at a time.  Only without the overpriced and important part.  And let’s face it, I can’t afford anything with a big word like trousers, mine are pants.

And remember…when you’ve scraped together enough of your spare change and saved enough out of your paycheck (that didn’t go for bills and groceries) and decided to put off buying the kid a new pair of shoes for another week to actually purchase a couple of tickets to the movies, this is what your money is going for.  Are you getting a good return on your investment?

Clearwater Scientologist Assaults Member Of Anonymous

I was asked to put out a post to help identify a woman suspected of assaulting a member of Anonymous protesting the Church of Scientology in their mecca of Clearwater, Florida.

The video of “pink lady” assaulting a protester can be seen here. Above is a still of her from the alleged assault where she attempted to rip the mask off of a member of Anonymous.

I don’t have a lot details on this assault, but this is part of a growing trend it seems as the Church of Scientology becomes ever more agitated by the continued pressure put forth by the internet activist group Anonymous.

This past weekend marked the fifth in a series of monthly protests against the Church organized by Anonymous — themed “Sea Arrrgh”, a tongue-in-cheek reference to Scientology’s pseudo-military group the Sea Organization. The Sea Org, as it is often referenced, is Scientology’s most devout group, and as such, they are most prone to the cult’s worse abuses, including forced labor camps, coerced abortions and the cruel “disconnection” policy enforced by the Church.

Anonymous is group of individuals from all walks of life who’ve come together for the common goal of exposing the abuses of Scientology, a cult which uses famous celebrities like Tom Cruise and John Travolta to help them recruit members to their organization.

Stalking Britney Spears — His Highness Ian Halperin Reveals New Book Project

Yesterday was quite an adventure. Glosslip received several emails about a piece in the New York Post’s Page Six which revealed a new project by New York Times bestselling author Ian
Halperin.

Meanwhile, Spears is the subject of a tome by investigative reporter Ian Halperin, the author of “Hollywood Undercover: Revealing the Sordid Secrets of Tinseltown” and “Bad and Beautiful: Inside the Dazzling and Deadly World of Supermodels.”

Halperin, who plans to offer “Stalking Britney: Under Siege with Britney Spears” to publishers next week, reveals “details of at least two suicide attempts by the troubled star,” as well as allegations by a drug dealer about her substance abuse.

Glosslip, who has maintained close ties to Ian “His Highness Hollywood” Halperin since our radio interview in January and then again after his ill-fated movie screening in New York (due to Scientology-suspected sabotage), was contacted by major media outlets to help track Halperin. Halperin, who’s been out of the country, also stated he’s been contacted by virtually every tabloid magazine including Us Weekly, Entertainment Tonight and In Style for information, but is keeping the details of the book guarded.

But as one of the only people with exclusive access to Halperin, we were able to speak with him today about the new project, which is tentatively titled “Britney Spears Stalked” and Ian did reveal to Glosslip the general overview of the book.

“It will be a sympathetic portrayal of the rise and fall of Britney Spears. What will make this project unique, is it’s an undercover expose where I posed and stalked her as a member of the paparazzi.”

Halperin told us he conceived and executed the idea while he was working in Los Angeles on his Hollywood Undercover book, wherein he posed as a gay actor seeking to make it in the movie industry. During his adventures for that book, he was able to infiltrate the cultish world of Scientology, the porn industry and the seedy underbelly of Hollywood.

Apparently Halperin’s a master multi-tasker, as he was also able to find time to stalk Britney Spears. Glosslip pressed him for more details about the recovering pop sensation, but Halperin remained mostly tight-lipped, but he did tell us, that while Britney herself is a nice enough person, she was surrounded by users and abusers who were instrumental in her very public downward spiral, which included, according to Ian, a serious substance abuse problem.

Halperin promises us exclusive updates on this project, which will bring to you!

Mark Bunker Speaks Out About YouTube Reinstatement - Thanks The Many Who Helped

Mark Bunker, whose beard is very wise indeed, posted a new video about his reinstatement and the process which went into that reinstatement. Mark also gave a nice shout out to Victore Flamel, and in the process shows he does NOT read Harry Potter (but I do :).

Victore has been very helpful to me as well, and we are hoping soon that this VIP will be gracing these pages with their writing skills. In the meantime — great job Anonymous and those who’ve been working behind the scenes.

What you are doing is working, and rather quickly. Rumor has is it Kendra Wiseman’s of ExScientologyKids.com parents were present for her wedding recently, and man, that’s huge. Disconnection is one of the most destructive policies perpetuated by the Church of Scientology, and for Kendra’s father (an Exec at CCHR) and mother to be present is a tremendous sign. For pics and Kendra’s story, please visit here.

UPDATE: A very fitting tribute celebrating WBM’s return :)

Thanks Anon Agent M!

Lindsay Lohan Follows In Britney Spears Footstep, Hits Small Screen In “Ugly Betty”

I know everyone’s been wondering what our favorite coke-head man-eater’s been up to, so it’s with great pleasure we present you the above clip of Lindsay Lohan once again playing a mean girl on the popular sitcom, “Ugly Betty.”

Like Britney Spears did in “How I Met Your Mother,” Lindsay must be hoping the small screen will also help her resurrect her flagging career. The only difference is, unlike Britney, who turned out to have a legitimate mental health issue, all of Lindsay’s off-camera antics, like driving drunk, TWICE, being caught in possession of cocaine TWICE, and a triple-stint in rehab all in 2007, were her own doing. While Lindsay is perhaps more qualified to make an appearance on the small screen than popstar Britney Spears, it does NOT guarantee her the same degree of success.

Lindsay’s last handful of films BOMBED ( “A Prairie Home Companion,” “Bobby,” “I Know Who Killed Me,” “Chapter 27″ “Georgia Rule”) despite working along side showbiz greats like Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman, Lindsay still managed to bring down these opportunities with her reckless, toxic behavior.

Lindsay is slated to start shooting the comedy “Labor Pains” which should be an opportunity for her to stage a comeback, but with recent news of her falling off the wagon and resuming her partying ways, one has to wonder how she will manage to keep her nose clean?

Speaking of which….

But wait, there’s more…

Lindsay Lohan Has Infamous New Stalker: John Lennon’s Assassin

It’s been a while since we’ve discussed our favorite other addict, Lindsay Lohan. You may recall 2007 was a less than stellar year for Lindsay, as she released BOMB after BOMB at the box office, picking up like five Razzie awards for her thriller “I Know Who Killed Me,” oh yeah, and she went to rehab three times and was busted twice for cocaine possession and driving under the influence.

But wait, there’s more…

“Struck” The Film, Celeb Scientologists Team Up For Romantic Comedy

This movie may or may not be good, I won’t make a judgment call on that as I haven’t seen it. The cast reads like a who’s who in Scientology, Jenna and Bodhi Elfman, Helena Christensen, Kelly Preston, Nancy Cartright (huh, WTF?), Marisol Nichols (married to producer Taron Lexton) — all Scientologists, the writers, Milena Ferreira, her husband Nathan Lorch, Scientologists, and it’s being financed and produced by, you guessed it, a Scientologist, Taron Lexton.

The romantic comedy starring Bodhi Elfman, is about a man who is struck by an arrow which doesn’t harm him, but he can’t remove it either. Interesting….

I guess that’s ok, the Church has been colluding with industry insiders for years to take over Hollywood, why not just come out and be obvious about it. I wonder though, did they cast only Scientologists because it’s so good they didn’t want to share, or because these people can’t get work elsewhere because Hollywood, mainstream America and the world at large are sick of Scientology and their star roster forcing their faith down our throats via Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley.

The films been premiering at film festivals, including one in Newport Beach, CA. yesterday. If anyone’s seen this, please feel free to give us your review. I can’t impugn the work of the actors, they’re all good in their own right. I can however impugn their judgment in not looking more closely at their chosen faith and asking some tough question.

Good luck with the new film CoS shills, I hope it doesn’t SUCK.

Who’s Zooming Who In The Oprah, Tom Cruise Couch Revisit?

Tom Cruise rarely does anything spontaneous. Even his ’seemingly-spontaneous’ couch calisthenics on Oprah’s show in 2005 was deemed to be premeditated. All this over-the-top exuberance for finding his “true love” (third time’s the charm, right?) in actress Katie Holmes after only a few weeks of knowing each other, was surely to help make the transition that much more believable. Sadly, contrived spontaneity rarely goes over well.

In the years following this epic interview, Oprah Winfrey and Tom Cruise’s names have become inextricably linked to one another, and created as they say, an elephant in the room. Oprah for her part, was seen as complicit in giving Cruise a forum to really behave in a disingenuous way. She sat back and while he let the crazy out, all the while secretly wondering “WTF?” is going on. Oprah received zero credibility for her Tom Cruise interview, and while she’s still insanely popular, she knows the whole TC interview hangs over her like a dark cloud.

But what about Tom Cruise? What does he have to gain by going back to Oprah’s couch? He too is dogged with the knowledge he let his inner Scientology-induced weirdo out for all the world to gape upon. Surely he’d be better off letting this connection die a excruciatingly slow death. Or perhaps not.

With all the speculation as to what Oprah will be asking Tom, and what Tom will be shilling this time, why not go to the authority on Tom Cruise, the man who spent two years studying, dissecting and analyzing the world’s most famous, and now infamous actor, NYTimes bestselling biographer Andrew Morton.

I asked Mr. Morton for his thoughts on this upcoming interview and he seemed pretty interested in the process that went into bringing these two forces together once more, considering how poorly it went last time. From Morton:

Leader of Church of Scientology, David Miscavige, Physically Abused Staff For Years

Glosslip’s interview with ex-Scientologist Marc Headley in many ways was more of a blow to the Church of Scientology, than ABC’s light coverage of CoS victims Jenna Miscavige (niece of Scientology leader David Miscavige) and actor Jason Beghe’s powerful Scientology video with Mark Bunker of Xenutv.com.

Thanks to the exceedingly gracious efforts of Anonymous, we are able to bring you transcribed information from that interview, so that our hearing impaired, or dial-up users can be privy to this illuminating, yet disturbing details about the Church of Scientology’s inner workings. Marc Headley is not only an amazingly articulate person, he’s also very brave for stepping forward to share this information from deep inside the Church. As Executive Producer at Golden Era Production, the production company owned by Scientology, Headley worked closely with RTC President and CoS figurehead, David Miscavige.

When you read this transcribed interview I ask that you bear in mind, this man, David Miscavige, is a role model to Scientologists around the globe, he is the head of an organization which deems itself as the spiritual salvation for mankind. Please try to imagine any other spiritual leader in this role, and truthfully ask yourself if this conduct is befitting of such an honor:

DO: Good afternoon Glosslip radio listeners, I am Dawn Olsen of glosslip.com, and I am very excited to have a very special guest with me today. It’s Marc Headley, an ex-Scientologist who was with the Church of Scientology for 15 years. He’s got some really very interesting, exciting and sad stories to share with us about his experiences within the Org. He and I talked a few times before while we were setting up the interview, and certainly I’m well aware of the stories he has to tell, so I’m just going to give you a little background here from his bio.

Marc worked at the Scientology international management headquarters in Gilman Hot Springs
from 1990-2005, and he worked for the media production company owned by the Church of
Scientology, Golden Era productions. They’re the ones that put out all those Scientology
commercials and propaganda videos we’ve seen and mocked on the web over the last few months.

Having worked there for quite some time, he ended up becoming the Executive Producer at
Golden Era Productions. He left in 2005 and now lives in California with his family. We’re going to
leave it at that because why he left is very pertinent to this story. First we’re going to begin with
introducing Marc. Hello Marc, thanks for joining us, I’m really excited to have you.

MH: Hi Dawn, great to be here.

DO: And you’re recovering from a cold, so everybody…

MH: Just a little bit hoarse.

DO: Just a little bit hoarse. We’ll try and not make you talk too much. I’m just curious, can you tell us how you became involved in Scientology? I know you still have family members who are in, so let’s go with your background first.

MH: What actually happened was my mother, probably in the very early 80’s, got involved in Scientology through a friend.

More and more, she became involved in doing courses and getting auditing. I grew up living
across the street from the Celebrity Center in Los Angeles. So I grew up around Scientologists,
then my mom became a Scientologist and I went to a Scientology school. So from about the age of
six or seven I was indoctrinated into the lingo and the procedures, and all the different things that
Scientologists do. In 1989, I left school, the Scientology school that I was attending, to join the Sea
Organization.

Very shortly from when I joined the Sea Org, I was transferred from Los Angeles to the
Golden Era productions facility, so that’s how I got in. When you grow up in Scientology, the Sea
Org is made out to be the elite of all Scientology so if you can actually go into the Sea Org, it’s
considered a privilege. They have a slogan: “Many are called, few are chosen.” And that’s how they
recruit people.

DO: So, they make it sound like a very elite society, and not everyone, you may be interested but not everyone gets to join, therefore increasing the image of the Sea Org?

MH: That’s exactly correct. You don’t really see when you’re Scientology public, if you’re a parishioner, behind the scenes into the Sea Org. You only see the staff that work at the different churches. A parishioner might never go into a management facility or a confidential location such as Golden Era Productions. They’re not really privy to the goings on there, its very mysterious.
Even when I joined the Sea Org in 1989, I was not aware that there was a facility, even a secret
facility that was up in Hemet. I had no idea, even after I was in the Sea Org for many months. I had
never heard it until I was asked if I would like to go there. So I said “Sure, what it it?”, I didn’t even
know.

I didn’t know who David Miscavige was, I didn’t know who any of the current leaders of
Scientology were, nothing. I had no knowledge of them whatsoever, that’s the view of a kid
growing up in it. So that’s how I ended up at Golden Era Productions.

DO: Now, when you and I talked, I shared with you some experiences that Jeff Hawkins and I talked about. Do you know Jeff?

MH: Yeah, I know Jeff.

DO: I assumed you would have, but there’s a lot of people who’ve come and gone over the years so I shouldn’t assume that people know each other. But he worked with David Miscavige doing marketing, that type of stuff, I figured you could have run into each other. He told a very disturbing story about David actually abusing his staff members and specifically Jeff, he himself was abused.

And he saw a senior Org member get beaten, it was like an open-handed slap to the face
several times. That was David’s way of intimidating staff into doing what he wants and he’s a very
angry man. But you also have some more stories and I’d like you to share that with us, I think it’s
very important because we’re trying to build a picture about a man we don’t know that much about,
you have a lot of insight into that, why don’t you tell us what you know about David Miscavige.

MH: Well, from the time I showed up at Golden Era Productions in 1990, I had been there maybe a few months when I saw David Miscavige physically beat somebody up. And that was in 1990. So it’s not like this just developed over the past five years, there’s a pattern going on.

All the way up until I left in 2005 I’d say that I saw David Miscavige physically strike somebody or slap as you say or punch in the face, I’d say I witnessed myself at least thirty different occasions, myself. And I heard from other people second hand many more instances that occurred. That was the turning point was for me. In late 2004 I was walking through the main factory facility with David Miscavige and I had made a smart-alec comment in response to one of his questions, apparently he’d not had a good day already and my comment was not well received and he proceeded to unload on me.

He punched me in the face at least ten times and my glasses fell off, I was thrown up against a
desk unit, a counter top, and that was the moment right then when I realized I could go no further
down than this, to be beaten by the leader of my so-called church. What else could I do that could
get me in a lower status than that? And I decided that I would strike back. As soon as he saw that in
my eyes, I was grabbed and escorted out of the building and made to take a walk for about an hour
or so. He sent several people off to console me, that he really shouldn’t have done that and he was
really sorry. While I was being escorted out of the room I heard him say to his staffers, “He was
going to hit me back”.

And I thought to myself, “Do you know what? I really was, I really was going to hit you back”. At that point that I started figuring out what I was going to do because I wasn’t going to be staying there much longer. And in January 2005 I left. A lot of people, a lot of Scientologists think that Dave Miscavige is the savior of the church and all those things that he’s done have kept it alive, basically the reason they are still around. That might also be the reason why they’re not going to last, because of the crimes, the physical violence, the emotional and mental torture, that he puts people through, its mind-boggling.

A lot of people don’t believe, the stuff they read on the internet, that David Miscavige has done. When I got out of the Sea Org I couldn’t believe the amount of stuff that was on the internet that was absolutely, 100% accurate, of the going ons at the international headquarters or Int Base. So yeah, there’s a lot of stuff on the internet and it’s absolutely true, pretty much I’d say 99% of it is very accurate.

David, while not a “minister” at the Church, is certainly the person who sets policy, creates initiatives and leads his “parish.” By virtue of Miscavige’s role as head of a “religious organization” it is entirely appropriate to set standards of conduct upon him befitting of someone who leads such a wealthy organization. An organization mind you, which prides itself on ethical mores, spiritual guidance and has taken the charge of “obliterating psychiatry,” saving mankind, and ultimately “clearing the planet” of undesirable elements which keep us as a species from becoming enlightened.

Do you suppose Pope Benedict XVI punches, slaps and abuses his flock? Does the Dali Lama do this? What about high ranking Rabbis, Ministers, Reverends and spiritual leaders around the world? Today while sitting in my own house of worship, I tried imagining the leader of my faith doing this. It was laughable, inconceivable.

This man, who cradles babies with the love of a father to all, the person who smiles upon me and all those who stood with me as though the very light of divinity shone through me, and those in my fellowship. This person who asked kindly for my donations to continue their good works, but smiled just as benevolently upon me as they did upon those who couldn’t give. This person who feels their offering of salvation on behalf of their chosen faith, is predicated on the example they set, based on teachings which are thousands of years old. This person wouldn’t dare think it was appropriate to treat another member of their congregation or any other human the way David Miscavige has treated his dedicated Sea Org members as described above.

I wish this were the worst of it, but sadly, the sadism and cruelty is even worse than the abuse Marc discusses above. Regardless of your faith, or lack thereof, we are all expected to treat each other with respect. But this behavior, witnessed first hand, is unforgivable coming from a leader of a so-called “religion.”

Coming up next….how David Miscavige tortured his staff, had members thrown in filthy lakes, and mentally abused and ridiculed his own associates.
