David Duchovny In Rehab For Sex Addiction

Actor David Duchovny, of X Files fame, has reportedly entered a treatment center to receive help for his sex addiction:

“I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction,” the actor says in an exclusive statement. “I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family.”

And I say good for him, for recognizing that he has a problem and for taking steps to deal with it.  What he needs is privacy and our prayers, not stupid jokes that just spread misunderstandings about what he is dealing with.  Some of the articles and comments I’ve seen on other sites really make me sick.  Would people be making jokes if it came out that he was struggling with alcohol addiction, or drug addiction?  It is imperative that anyone dealing with any sort of addiction, no matter what it is, recognize the warning signs and be willing to seek help.

Our thoughts and prayers are with David and his family.

Morgan Freeman Injured In Accident; Bernie Mac Battling Pneumonia; Christina Applegate Diagnosed With Breast Cancer

Wow, things seem to come in threes.  There seemed to be a series of bad news items come out over the weekend, so I thought I’d tackle them all in one spot.

First, venerated actor Morgan Freeman was involved in a serious car accident Sunday night while in Mississippi:

TMZ is reporting that the “Dark Knight” star, and Hollywood’s favorite voice of God, was in a car accident around 11:30 Sunday night, just north of Ruleville, Miss.

Freeman was airlifted from the crash scene to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The news of the wreck was initially reported by MediaTakeout.

Freeman’s condition is unknown. State troopers told reporters that the actor was talking before he was taken to the hospital.

An unidentified female passenger was also in the car. Her condition is not known.

Morgan and his wife have a ranch in Mississippi and spend much time there.  It’s being reported that he may have fallen asleep while driving and ended up flipping his car:

WHBQ in Memphis is reporting Freeman was on his way home to Charleston when the smash-up happened. Bill Luckett, Freeman’s friend and co-owner of Freeman’s restaurant Madidi, said his buddy was sitting up and talking at the hospital.

One source tells TMZ that Freeman has broken several ribs and injured his knee. His female passenger, we’re told, had to be cut out of the car using the Jaws of Life. A source says she’s suffering from bumps and bruises, but is “all in all in good condition.”

Next, comedian and actor Bernie Mac is still in the hospital recovering from a bout with pneumonia, and reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated:

Despite dramatic rumors about the state of his health, “Bernie Mac is still alive and being treated in a Chicago hospital for pneumonia and is expected to make a full recovery,” his rep tells PEOPLE. [...]

“Mr. Mac is responding well to treatment and will be released soon,” she said in a statement. “He asked that his privacy and that of his family is respected while he gets well.”

I had pneumonia over the winter and it’s nothing to fool around with.

Lastly, actress Christina Applegate, 38, was diagnosed with breast cancer and is receiving treatment:

Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, but the disease was caught early and the actress is expected to fully recover, her publicist said.

The Emmy winner’s cancer was detected through an MRI ordered by a doctor and is not life-threatening, publicist Ame Van Iden said in a statement Saturday.

This brings home to all of us the importance of yearly checkups by a doctor and frequent self-exams on our own.  If you’ve never done one, here is an easy-to-follow video on how to perform an exam on yourself (no substitute for a doctor’s appointment, of course).  Early detection is key.

Our best wishes and prayers for recovery and strength to all concerned.

Amy Winehouse In And Out Of Hospital, Blames Drug Mixup

No, the title isn’t meant to be ironic, or sarcastic, or even silly.  Amy Winehouse was taken to the British version of the ER over the weekend, but it seems she’s back home now:

Amy Winehouse was discharged from hospital this morning after receiving emergency treatment for a adverse reaction to ‘medication’.

A spokeswoman for University College Hospital, where the singer spent the night, said she was ushered out via a private exit shortly after 9.45am.

She was said to be in good spirits after a ‘comfortable night’.

The spokeswoman said: ‘Our doctors decided to keep her overnight for observation. She had a comfortable night and will be discharged today.’ [...]

Her father blamed the scare on a mistake with her prescription pills, saying: ‘She’s fine, she just mixed up her medication.’

Her spokesman Chris Goodman added in a statement: ‘Amy Winehouse suffered a reaction to medication at home this evening and was taken to hospital.’

You know what?  I’m going to give Amy the benefit of the doubt on this one and say that she probably did mix up the medication she was supposed to take.  After all, in the drugged-up haze she has been existing in, it’s probably difficult to keep any proper meds straight.

But the trainwreck has continued to roll on this week, with Amy having gone out almost every night, punching a metal gate, pouting, partying, and generally acting like a total bad example, all in full view of the ever-present paparazzi cameras there to record her every move.  Her behavior has always been erratic to say the least, but it seems to have really stepped up since her husband’s sentence was handed down.  She knows the cameras are out there and anything she does is going to be documented, so why do it, other than she just doesn’t care any more?

I wish she would get into an intensive rehab center to straighten herself out, but at this stage of the game I don’t see it happening until she seriously hurts herself in some way (I guess emphysema doesn’t count as bad enough).  I don’t know how people can continue defending her in the state she is in, but I guess some can.

EDITED TO ADD:  Just saw this article in the Daily Mail…an interesting piece written by a reporter who was invited to spend some time in Amy’s home.  Here is a particularly interesting snippet:

Winehouse says all of this is the product of heartbreak over being separated from her true love, whose name appears in a little heart pin she often wears in her hair.

‘To be honest, my husband’s away, I’m bored, I’m young,’ Winehouse tells me.

‘I felt like there was nothing to live for. It’s just been a low ebb.’

Talk Show Host Michael Savage Should Read More, Talk Less

Media personality and talk show host Michael Savage is known for being a bit of a loose cannon (read:douchebag). It’s his job to make controversial statements, offend the masses and be somewhat of a fire-starter in order to drum up ratings. This however, does not give him the right to ignore facts, medical professionals, historical data and general perceptions of reality.

Savage, whose show appears on the TalkRadioNetwork has mostly conservative views and is listed as the third most popular conservative radio host in the country. Savage is also a major homophobe and was fired from MSNBC for making some very insensitive comments to caller who was pranking the host. Who had the last laugh there?!

So what’s Micahel Savage done now? Oh, not much, just bash a bunch of physiologically challenged children and their parents. Savage, had the audacity to call autism a “fraud, a racket” as well as stating the following about the children diagnosed with autism and the parents of these afflicted children:

“Now the illness du jour is autism,” Savage said. “You know what autism is? I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.”

“What do you mean they scream and they’re silent?” Savage added. “They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”

Now you don’t have to be a bleeding heart liberal or even a person with 3rd grade education to see the issue with the above statement from Savage. Clearly the guy is an ignorant, unread, unsophisticated, lazy-ass rabble-rouser. Having witnessed children with autism first hand and the parents who are desperate to try and help these children, it floors me that someone would make such a statement.

When you compare a “normal” kid’s behavior, to a child with autism, the differences are marked and disconcerting. Autistic children are hyper-sensitive to a variety of outside influences such as noise, smell, light, as well as, foods, textures and the moods of others. Handling these children so as to ease their emotions and sensitivities requires a lot of love, patience and hand-ons parenting.

I am all for disciplining one’s children, but there’s a huge difference between behavioral issues with “normal” kids and those with bona fide emotional issues stemming from a disability. I have tremendous respect for parents of children who must dig deep for reserves of understanding and compassion for the special needs of their kids.

So, essentially, because Michael Savage spends his time looking down on anyone and everyone whom he deems beneath him and raging on them through jaded eyes of ignorance, he has essentially cast doubt into the minds of millions of listeners of his show of the existence of a very real illness and the inherent struggles and difficulties of dealing with children with autism.

Great job Michael, what’s next? Punching a litter of kittens, slapping babies for pooping, spitting on Alzheimer’s patients? How about you shut yer cakehole assface and do some research before you go spouting off a the mouth. Go to the library, volunteer at a children’s hospital, feed the needy, do something useful you cancer on society.

For more on autism, go here. It’s real and it can be heartbreaking for anyone who knows a child who suffers.

Michael Jackson: Heck On Wheels

I’ll have to ask Shaun O’Mac if he happened to see Michael Jackson on one of his recent trips to Barnes & Noble in Las Vegas.  Watch your feet, Michael has taken to a wheelchair and jammies!

The singer attempted to travel about the town anonymously with his four-car convoy, wheelchair, dreadlock wig, sunglasses, trucker hat, and signature surgical mask:

It remained unclear last night whether Jackson, who is most famous for his footwork and in particular his moonwalk, actually needs the wheelchair to get around or whether he was just using it as a prop.

He has been spotted both with and without the chair in recent weeks.

He has battled numerous health problems over the years, having being diagnosed with lupus and vitiligo and the amount of surgery he has had has rendered him unrecognisable from his former self.

Rumor has it that he needs the chair at the moment because he is battling a persistent back problem.  I can’t make fun of that, because I have a persistent back problem myself, and it’s hard to deal with at times.

He and his three children visited a Barnes & Noble to peruse the books and toys:

On this occasion, Jackson arrived with his three children, who were unusually unmasked, and headed straight for the children’s book section, where he remained alone for some time.

An eyewitness said: ‘They arrived at the Barnes and Nobel shop in Las Vegas on Monday afternoon.

‘First Michael was in the childrens’ section on his own in the wheelchair reading books. The three children were at another table with the bodyguards.

‘He was in the children’s section for about half an hour. He then went to the music section and was sitting in the chair looking through various books.

‘But this time the children were in the children’s section. Then he pushed himself around in the wheelchair for a while and ended up in the magazine section.

‘He was in the shop for about two hours in total. There was no special treatment. The shop was not closed to the public at any point.

‘There were quite a few members of the public in the shop who knew he was there but no one approached him.

‘To be honest, he looked a bit weird wheeling himself around covered up in a surgeon’s mask and that is probably what freaked people out to not want to approach him.

‘When they left the shop, the children came out first and he was wheeled out behind them. He never left the wheelchair at any point in the shop.’

You know what?  If I saw a tall, extremely thin man sitting in a wheelchair with a dreadlock wig, trucker hat, sunglasses, and a surgical mask at my local bookstore, I’d think, “That is definitely Michael Jackson, and I’m staying away from him.  Yuck.”  Then I’d probably douse my hands with Germ-X just from being in the same room.

Let’s face it…these so-called “disguises” do nothing but draw attention to him.  Everybody knows this is MJ, he’d do better to try and look like a normal black man.  Now THAT would blend in and nobody would know it’s him!

The ones I truly feel sorry for are his children.  They didn’t ask to be born into his perverted world, to live under a microscope all their lives.  They’re living in a rented in Lost Wages (an apt place for MJ to live), they have no permanent home, they can’t go to school (I mean, they’re Michael’s kids, can you imagine?), and it appears they have no friends other than each other and whoever Michael brings home.  From all accounts, they are polite and well-behaved, but there’s more to a well-brought-up child than knowing how to properly act in public.  By all appearances they seem to be normal, attractive children, not the freaks the public has guessed them out to be in the past when their father kept them under wraps and masks and blankets.  Yet, due to their father’s freakish behavior, we were led to believe that there must be either something wrong with them or he was hyper-afraid of something terrible happening to them if their faces were to be seen.

So if he really needs the wheelchair for a recurring back problem, then he has my sympathy.  But if he’s just using it to try and disguise himself…well, do you think it’s working?

Heather Locklear Being Treated For Anxiety, Depression

Actress Heather Locklear has checked into a clinic in Arizona to receive treatment for anxiety and depression:

“Heather has been dealing with anxiety and depression,” Locklear’s spokeswoman Cece Yorke said in a statement to Reuters. “She requested an in depth evaluation of her medication and entered into a medical facility for proper diagnosis and treatment.”

I don’t know…if I’d had to deal with the things Heather has had to deal with the past few years (unfaithful husband Richie Sambora runs off with two-faced BFF Denise Richards, Richie popped for DUI with their young daughter in tow, a recent suicide call), I might have some anxiety and depression too.

Not trying to make light of what she’s dealing with, whether it be caused by external influences, an imbalance in body chemistry, or both.  I’m glad that she recognized the warning signs and got herself into a place where she can be monitored and taken care of by professionals.  From things I’ve read, she’s been under a doctor’s care for a while now, and I’m glad she recognized that further evaluation was needed.

And if anyone out there is struggling with depression, there’s absolutely no shame whatsoever in going for treatment or continuing your current course of treatment.  I urge anyone dealing with this to seek help.  Sometimes, it’s not just a temporary thing or something you’ll snap out of, it requires serious attention.  We at GlossLip wish Heather all the best in her continued recovery.

Ewan McGregor And Anderson Cooper Have Skin Cancer Removed

Two big names have had battles with skin cancer lately.  Both actor Ewan McGregor and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper have had skin cancer moles removed from their faces, and both men are doing fine now.

For Ewan’s part, his doctor noticed a suspicious-looking mole on his face a year ago and suggested he have it taken off:

The Scottish actor, 37, was promoting his latest film, the sex thriller Deception, when he revealed on the BBC that he was forced to have a suspicious-looking facial mole – one of several – removed from just below his right eye.

“You have to be careful if you’re pale-skinned and spend any time in the sun,” McGregor said. “I went to see a specialist who thought they were better to be removed, and indeed he was correct.”

And Anderson Cooper decided it was better to tell what happened back in March than to let viewers think he was brawling over the election:

On a personal note, I’ve been off for the last couple of days. I had minor surgery on Monday. A small spot of skin cancer was removed from under my left eye. I hadn’t planned on mentioning this, but I still have stitches and you’ll no doubt notice them tonight. Don’t want you to think I got into a fist fight with Charlie Rose.

Plus, it was revealed that just this week E Street Band keyboardist Danny Federici died of melanoma after a three-year battle with the disease.

I cannot stress enough that if you are going to be out in the sun, protect yourself.  Use sunscreen, wear a hat, use an umbrella, any combination, but keep yourself protected.  That goes double for those of us who are fair-skinned and/or who have a history of melanoma in our families.  I personally have a family member who has had skin cancer removed, and so I’ve become much more diligent at keeping sunscreen on and making sure my kids have it on.  I applaud these celebrities for putting their personal stories out there; maybe their experiences will help someone else.

Having a tan is nice, but it isn’t worth dying for.
