A Shameless MTV Strikes New Low With Britney Spears VMA Spectacle
I had every intention to watch the 2007 VMA's last night. What will Britney Spears comeback as the opening performance, who'd want to miss that? But then I started reorganizing my closet, cleaning out the fridge and finally I decided my toilet needed some intense scrubbing and next thing you know, bam! I missed it.
Thanks be to Jesus for the internets though, 'cuz Britney's 3:39 minute performance has been immortalized for all eternity. In fact, can you imagine what our ancestors 1,000 years from now will think when they dig this gem out of the time capsule? Well, I can. They'll contemplate the meaning of a society which takes pleasure in watching the mentally handicapped perform in what can only be described as a burlesque show for the slow and challenged.
In fact, need we wait another millennium to contemplate the significance of this sub-par, utterly embarrassing display of mediocre talent, as a sign of our ultimate downfall? Are we really ready to surrender our mantel of excellence? Is the same culture which put forth such musical greats as Elvis, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Robert Johnson, hell, even MADONNA, really ready to take responsibility for what Britney Spears has become?
Honestly, MTV KNEW Britney was a mess, and certainly NOT ready for anything that could remotely be called a "comeback," yet without any hesitation or a sense of moral responsibility they essentially enticed her (who knows with what) to make an enormous ass out of herself. They really should be ashamed of themselves. Not only for what they did to Britney on a human level, but what they subjected the audience to. While a spectacle may seem fun in the short haul, in the long run we have all been cheapened and lessened for having witnessed a person who once possessed "showmanship" make a fool of themselves for the sheer sport of it.
One thing seems perfectly clear, Britney Spears CLEARLY wishes to recede back into the swampy, muckish obscurity from which she rose.
Perhaps out of kindness we should all avert our gazes elsewhere and allow Britney to quietly retreat, for she isn't coming back, and has forever lost whatever it was she once had.....
On second thought, it's too much fun to watch a speeding train of hot mess jump the tracks!
