Oprah Winfrey, Senator?
Okay, this whole Oprahmania thing has just officially Gone Too Far. Over-reached itself. Jumped the shark. Word from the horse's mouth is that soon-to-be-former Governor Rod Blagojevich (and yes, I had to copy/paste that) actually considered Queen Of All She Surveys Oprah Winfrey to fill President Obama's Senate seat:
Blagojevich made the revelation to Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America" on the day his impeachment trial is set to begin. That trial is expected to toss him out of office. The governor said that Winfrey's name came up as a potential successor to Obama in the Senate. "She seemed to be someone who had helped Barack Obama in a significant way to become president," Blagojevich said. Blagojevich added that "she had a much broader bully pulpit than a lot of senators."
His consideration of Winfrey was tempered, he suggested, by the fact that "she probably wouldn't take it, and then if you offered it to her, how would you do it in a way it wasn't a gimmick to embarrass her."
Is he kidding me? Embarrass her? She would have wet herself in a fit of rapturous joy and probably burst a blood vessel screaming it from the rooftops while she danced so hard her weave would come unwoved. She would think she finally found her Life's Purpose.
I'll admit that I haven't been following this whole Blagojevich (yeah, I typed it that time, but I got carpal tunnel doing so) thing as closely as I should be, mainly because I'm not that interested in following politics (and the reason for that is, as everyone knows, I'm pretty stoopid). But when I saw this, I almost fell out of my chair. I don't live in Illinois so I'm not sure exactly who would be a more suitable candidate, but I'd have to think Joe Schmoe The Ragpicker from up the road would be a better choice than Oprah. Doesn't this guy have a trial or something to attend?
