mastercard

MasterCard is an electronic payment processor that makes money by processing payments between the banks of merchants and the banks of purchasers that use its MasterCard debit and credit cards and Prepaid MasterCard to make purchases. MasterCard's main competitors are Visa, American Express, and Discover. MasterCard ranks behind Visa as second in total market share.

Although MasterCard has brand loyalty and is recognized the world over, almost half of its revenues come from within the borders of the United States. In no country outside of the U.S. does its revenues account for more than 10 percent.

The new Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act will affect MasterCard and other card issuers. The reform includes interest rate increase restrictions, more notice before changing rates, and restrictions on fees that can be charged among other items that it addresses. This is likely to affect earnings for the credit card companies.
